TITLE: Measurements of the Relaxation Times in the Plasma
of a Hydrogen Discharge
PERIODICAL: 6eskoslovenski 'U'asopis pro fiviku, 1960,
No. 5, P. 407
TEXT: The measurement of the relaxation times in the positive-
column plasma of a glow discharge in hydrogen was carried out
by the method based on the artificial excitation of the striations
in plasma (Ref. 1). The measurements of the relaxation times
were done at various currents and pressures in a non-striated
positive column asvell, as in'the positive columns containing
stationary striations. At currents of the order of 2 mA and
pressures of 2 mm Hg, the relaxation times are of the order of
2 - 5 lis. The relationship between the diffusion processes in
the positive column of the discharge and the measured relaxation
timesvA4 investigated. There is I Czech reference.

Ain ionization vacuum-meter with glowing cathode and
a logarithmic pressure scale
Slaboproud ob"-or, v. 22, no. 8, 1961. 480-483
TOM The well-known principle of the logarithmic differential
amplifier facilitates designing of an ionization vacuum-meter with
a logarithmic pressure scale. The measurement of ion current is
reduced to measuring the logaritlun of the ion-current electron cur-
rent ratio, thus eliminating the need to stabilize the electron cur-
rent which was necessary before.. The protection system enables the
vacuum gauge filament to be safeguarded against burn-out in cases
of sudden pressure increase. Very low preiisures from 10-3 torr to
10-7 torr may be measured reliably by an ionization vacuum meter
and, by attaching a special device, even pressures as low as 10-11
torr may be measured. A basic requirement for smooth functioning

of the ionization vacuum meter is a constant electron current. The
circuit diagram of an ionization vacuum meter is given. The device
for measuring the ion current consists of electron tubes ECC82. The
ion current is to be lower thin 10-9 A, High-frequency filters,
formed by a choke and 2 condensers, are installed in supply leads
to the ionization gauge. Protection against destroying the filament
through an abrupt pressure increase is provided by the polarized
relay. connected along with the germanium diode 5NN41 to the cathode
of the electron voltmeter. This, too, guards against putting the
device into operation at such a pressure, The switching system
insures that the device may be turned on only in the position I of
the chnnge-over switches P Clileasmimient"),. Fig. 2 shows in graphic
form the dependence of the pressure reading upon the change of the
electron current for various pressures, To eliminate converting
the readings of the device ~12 into logarithmic values, a logarith-
mic pressure scale is drawn up directly oti the scale shield of the
device, When changing the emission current by t.50~,*'- from the value
of 10 mA, the pressure reading will change by t5'1'3 -;t the most. An

Statistical evaluation of cases of sudden death from the years 1920-1949. Sudden
deaths represent 25.14%of all autopsied cases. 61.1% males and 38.8% females.
It is most frequently seen in newborns and infants without difference as to sex
in the first month oi life. In adult age males in the 5th decade and females in the
7th decade. As to the marital status, married males occur mucn more frequently
than single, widower or divorced. In females it is the opposite. Sudden deaths are
more frequent in the winter months, at the end and at the beginning of the week
and in the hours of the forenoon. Sudden death occurs most frequently at home dur-
ing rest. As to the causes of death in accordance with all statistical groups of
sudden deaths, the most frequent cause is disease or the heart and vessels -in 42%
with a steadily increasing trend. They are followed by diseases of the respiratory
organs with 19.57t, where the rapidly progressing ifflammatory diseases of the
lungs and bronchi in Wants are obviously of major importance. As regards pre-
vention, stress is laid upon the importance of regular medical contro. of all
citizens, concerning mainly cardiovascular diseases.

ABSTRACTs The described converter for the transformation of a nano-1
second time interval into a pulse train, is claimed to be original
both in circuitry and in technical characteristics (overshoot,
channel width stability* construction of constant delay line, etc.),
and is'intended for large scale commercial production. Nanosecond
intervals can be measured with this instrument accurate to about 1%.

The operating principles and the characteristics of the circuit
elements employed (oscillator, triggering univibrator, coincidence
circuit) are described and the linearity of the transformation dis-
cussed. The measurement accuracy and the operating reliability are
claimed to be superior to those of time-to-amplitude converters.
Another advantage is that the data can be read-out directly in digi-
tal code, making the equipment usable not only in multichannel
pulse-height analyzers, but as individual scaler circuits (with a
0.25 microsecond resolution time) and for the measurement of both
short (1--255 nanoseconds) and lorig (0.25--65 microseconds) time
intervals. The equipment is intended for the analysis of fast neu-
trons by the time-of-flight method. The neutron energy range from
0.5 to 30 MeV, corresponding to a transit time from 100 to 10 nano-
.-.seconds (for a base separation of about 1 meter) is covered by 256
conversion levels with a level width-of I nanosecond. Orig. art.

Title A Rapid Control in a Grinding Operation by the Determina-
tion of Specific Surface Area of the Ground Material*
Orig Pub Sklar a keramik, 1957, 7., 110 11, 331-333
Abstract Three methods for a rapid control (within 10-20 minutes)
of the grinding fineness are described. They are based
on the determination of a specific surface area (SA) of
powder-like materials by means of the rate of gas pene-
tration under standardized conditions for each method.
Among the listed methods are included:
1) the method described in English Standard BS 915..
1947, where SA is measured by passing air at a constant
pressure.

2) Blain's method (American Standard ASTM), where SA
is measured by passing air at varying pressures) and
3) the Soviet method (Giprotsment)j where SA is mea-
sured by passing air at constant pressure, but where-
upon a column of water of a specific height is used to
create a vacuum. A photo device for measuring SA of
powderlike substances is shown. The equations are
given for calculating SA according to Mein's method,
and for aalculating the porosity of pouder-like mate-
rial according to the Oiprotsownt method.
