ABSTRACT: This in a continuation of earlier work (Im v. 6. 1172, 1964 and v. 7. 227, 1965) on the interaction between oxygen and polyarystalline tungsten. The purpose of the present investigation, in which single-crystal tungsten was used, was to determine the effect of the surface structure on the interaction. Two in- directly heated discs (5 =n dia. and 0.6 mm thick) with faces parallel to the [1001 and [110] planes and cut from the same single crystal were measured simultaneously in the same experimental setup, The alignment of the samples is described. The experimental technique was al-41A to that used in the earlier investigatlons. From the difference in the equalization rates of the work functions on the two rjr- faces it is defte-ed that the oVgeu condensation coefficients are different on the two surfaces. Appreciable differences were also noted in the ooWgen adsorption on Card 1/2 L 8590-66 ACOMION Mt AP5019M the two surfaceso On the closer packed (1101 face there was no interaction between the adsorbed ootygen atwo and the tungsten atons. The decrease in the work ftn%-. tiou of the (100] surface to als;o discussed. "The authors thank D. A. GorodstWU for indexing the single-crystal targets by the slow-electron-diffraction method."
