ABFTRACTs The article gives brief information on the increase (in per-
centagea) of Soviet chemical production since the revolution
(in the current Five-Year Plan the 1955 production figure will
be doubled).
It then enumerates the production items now standardized
such ass butadiene-sodium r6bber, divinylnitrile rubber and
the grades of divinyletyrene rubber being produced in large
quantities. It is planned to standardize the latexes "nairits"o
and oil-filled divinylatirole rubber In the near future. Ap-
proximately 40 ~ of technical rubber products are not yet
standardized.
Some products of the chemical industry do not yet meet the
requirements# For instance, automobile tires are very different
in qualityl In some cases conveyer belts fail considerably
earlier, although their service life is expected to be about

of impurities in mineral acids and the content of nutrients in
fertilizers are justified.
Standardisation work In the immediate future has to be
directed on improvement of mineral fertilizers and insecticides.
The assortment of auxiliary substances used in dyeing of tex-
tiles has to be increased and the washing preparations# wettereg
emulgators, dressers and fasteners have to be standardized.
The assortment of special synthetic rubber has to be ex-
tended and the nutrient raw materials have to be replacedt it
is necessary to produce rubber which requires no thermoplasti-
fication, The service life of pneumatic tires has to be in-
creased and the assortment of these tires must be extended by
changing design and raw materials. The service life of tech-
nical rubber products has to be increased, manual production
operations have to be replaced by mechanized and automated pro-
cesses, which will bring about an abrupt decrease in prime
costs and improve the quality.
The purity of chemical reagents has to be increaaeal they
have to be classified and the methods of their chemical ana-

strength artificial fibers for cord fabric and technical fabrics
must be mastered. It is necessary to provide chemicals for the
rubber industry (sooth, accelerators, sulfur, chalk, zinc
oxide, etc) which do not require additional processing at the
consumer plants.
The experience of the foremost plants, the data of scienti-
fic research as well as foreign experience have to be utilized
in the big task of standardization of chemical products.

A new treatment of human carious teeth by means of pure chemicals without any use of
drills etc, has been tried, A 10% solution of lactic acid was used for etching and
softening the carious cavitiess After excavation the bottoms of the cavities were dried
and neutralized with a bicarbonate solution and then filled in the ordinary way with
cements and amalgams. Re-examinations 12-18 months later only showed very few cases of

ABSTRACT: The interaction of a 70 keV electron beam with atomin
and molecular gases was carried out using an
electrostatic electron.-velocity analysor (Refs 1-10
with resolution of the order of 150000 & 1. The
electron beam current did not usually exceed 5 VA whi e
the gas pressure was in the range 1 x 10-3 to I x 10-
mm Rg. The electron energy loss was measured by the
method described in*Ref 6. Experiments were carried out
with helium, neon and argon, oxy en, nitrogen and nitric
oxIdet and carbon tetrachloride fat 1+5 kV). For the
monoatomic gases certain loss lines deterted In
experiments with slow electrons are absent from the fast
Card electron spectra while for molecular gases all valuos of
1/2 loss energy detected in experiments w1th slow electrons
