Researches on the nature of the noxious action of guinea-pig blood on the body-
louse BIUL. PANSIV. INST. MOD. MORSK. TROPOK. GDANS1 1952, 4/1 (97-107)
It wsp observed thnt guinea-pig blood exerts and injurious effect on lice, due to
the formation of crystals of haamoglobin damaging the Intentinal epithelium. Ca-
bapsolv method of infecting lice for production of vaccine to considered to be of
no prRatinal value.

Title The Extraction and Properties of Purified Cerein B2,
An Anti-Biotic Formed by the Strain of Bacillus
Ceretis.
Orig Pub Acts, biochim. polon., 1955, ~, No 4, 389-407
Abst The "0" strain of Bacillus cereus was grown in a modified
Mg Anderson synthetic medium at 34 degrees. A 24-hour
growth of this culture was subjected to contrifueAtion,
and the active substance was extracted on activated char-
coal vith subsequent elution by isoamyl alcohol. Further
purification waa by the method of counterflow spreading.
If the 4 active components (A, Bl* B2, C), the most acti.
~ie was found to be the B2 fraction, which the authors

designate cerein B2 7 inactive admixtures were
found through chromatography in the purified preparation.
I is a colorloss, amorphous substance, easily soluble in
water, methanol, and glacial acetic acid, insoluble in
fat solvents. I is resistant to heat, does not lose its
activity through dehydration, and is not very stable
when stored. Unlike acids and, particularly, bases,
trypsin does not decompose 1. 1 is apolypeptid of lov
molecular weight, The toxicity of I is twice that of
etreptomycin. Among the organisms susceptible to the
anti-biotic action of I are dysentery bacteria, sal
nella) proteus) enetric bacillus and microbes of the
genus Serratia.
