TITLE: Dependence of major changes in climate on changes in the inclination of th4 Earth's axis to the plane of the ecliptic in relation to the Earth's motion SOURCE: Ref. zh. Geofizika, Abs. 10B290 REF SOURCE.- Sb. Muzeya zemleved. MGU, no. 3, 1965, 59-66 TOPIC TAGS: climate, geology, earth rotation, climate change ABSTRACT: A critical review is discussed of papers on major changes In climate and glaciation causes. The existing hypothesis purporting to explain the above- mentioned phenomena are rejected as inadequate. The theory of changes in the solar constant (Simpson, Milankovich, Predtechenskiy) is contradicted by the onset of permafrost during solar maximum and by the absence of glaciation periodicity L during brief time intervals as well as in the course of the entire geological history. The continental drift theory is untenable since the circumpolar location in itself does not lead to glaciation. As shown by Budykols calculations, in the ab2ence of L ice, the present Arctic temperature would have been + 20 C in summer and + 10 C in winter. It Is explained that the changes in atmospheric properties (clouding due Card .1 / 3 ACC NR, AR7001767 to volcanic ash or increased carbon dioxide concentration) concurrently with decreased radiation leads to a leveling of the equator-pole contrast and therefore to weakening of air and oceanic circulation as well as to a decrease precipitation 'in:: higher latitudes. 'However, the calculated ice mass during maximum glaciation was 123 million km3 (as compared with the current 30 million km3) and the world ocean level was 200 meters below the comtemporary level. Glaciation periods comprise ^.j 1016 of geologic time (Opik 1961) and follow the tectonic cycles: quartenary glaciation was preceded by the Alpine period, Permian- Carboniferous by Hercynian, cooling was also noted following the Caledonian stage. The author considers that the formation of mountains and related terrestrial mass shifts cause changes in the inclination angle of the Earth's rotation axis with respect to the orbital plane. The normal position of the rotation axis (inclination angle "660), which is close to the present position, leads to an equalization of climatic conr trasts, whereas the increase in the inclination angle causes cooling of polar regions This is supported by symmetric '(with respect to the Pole) distribution of residual glaciations and the pertnafrost.*bou, ndary (appro!cimateily the 55th* parallel).- In view of the above, the following events are explained: 1) cooling of tropicalregions during glaciations Inspite of the iMreased radiation 1~flux; 2) instability of the presentArctic glaciation and stability of Antarctic glactaft9n; 3) deluge legend; 4) loess problem; 6) advances of forests into tundra; 6) dtitribution of Permian 2/3 -ACC- NRI A117001767 carboniferous moraine; 7) absence of glaciations after the Kimmerian and partially after the Caledonian orogenic epochs. Elementy i privody silovykh aledyashchikh sixtem TEXT: The article discusses a method for obtaining the amplitude and phase characteristics of the load current and voltage of a bridge or differential reversible magnetic amplifier for motor control. The solution in found by a piecewise analytical method, where the operating cycle is divided into four intervals. In each interval analytic expressions are obtained on the basis of the following assumption: 1. The amplifier core is composed of a material with high permeability and a rectangular hysteresis loop. 2. The width of hysteresis loop is independent of the voltages across the working windings. 3. When one leg of the core is saturated during an entire half period, the magnetic state of the second leg varies over the limiting dynamic hysteresis loop under the influence only of the alternating potential applied to the Card 1/2 23776 The control characteristics ... The idea of an underwater-vehiole is very old. Originally, however, they were not meant for war purposes. Also the future sub- marine fleet will serve peaceful purposes. There exists already a great number of underwater-vehicles of all types and sizes the description of which is impassible in such a short article. Only some of. them are mentioned here. Accorti- ' ing to reports of the foreign press there are smaller sub- marines for tourismg sports, and various other purposes. In England there exists a minute submarine "Nellill (Fig 1) for taking underwater-picturea. There are mine sweepers for 1 or 2 persons. One of these boats may be seen on figure 2. The application of atomic submarines for whale fishing is Card 115 taken into consideration. The design of such a whaler is 1 8/18 Beyond the Ship There Is a Blue Continent SOV//29-59-4-24/26 Card 2/3 shown on figure 3. At present design work of atom-driven rapid submarine-tank shi is performed in numerous states (USAp England# Japan eto~s. In England design work is made for an especially big transportation oubmarine with atom drive (Fig 4), Submarines may be very useful also in the salvage of sunken ships and, especially valuable goods. At great depths man can see only at very short distances. For this reason thq deep-ses-camers, has gained great importance in the-course of tne last years. In order to enlarge the range of vision it is suitable to use submarines combined in pairs (Fig 5). After it wis found that tang is a valuable raw material it may be possible that it will be industrially utilized in the future* Shi, hulls with cutters would be suited for collecting tang fFig 6). It is believed that it would be useful in the future to lift scrap from the bottom of the sea. All vehicles montionedg howeverg are not suited for deep-sea research since they are not capable of withstanding the huge water pressure at these depths. For this reason special deep-sea ships Are constructed (Fig 7). The bathyscaph designed by Piocard is also interesting. A further oonstTUOtiOn for deep-sea,.research is the so-called Beyond the Ship There is a Blue Continent Card 3/3 SOV/29-59-4-24/26 "submarine helicopter", The decision taken by the Soviet Government in 1958 to put a submarine of the Navy at the disposal for scientific research work was of great scientific importance* The ship "Severyankall ias converted as to meet the demands of this work. In the first cell of the boat (colored inserted leaf) the laboratory is established which is equipped with all necessary instruments and measuring devices. Bulleyes are fitted into the walle besides them powerful search lighto are mounted'. A television camera which projects the pictures 'to the ecreita in the laboratory was installed in the bow. The boat iday bo stopped at a wanted depth. For the investigation of:the bottom of the sea the boat goes aground* The researchors in their diving suits may leave the boat through a look and make observations outside the boat. By means of hydro locators and echq sound- ing "Severyankall is capable of*.datecting fish shoals, of measuring the density of these shoale, of investigating the migration of the fishes and of doing other useful ob- servations. The OSeveryanka" put out to sea for her first expedition in the Barents sea last year. There are 9 figures. KRTUCHKOV, Tu.8., inzh.
