TITLEs On a linearization of the equation or an elastic rod rEMODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal, Matemattka, no. 2, 1963, 39, abstract 2B167 (Z4atobow. mat., 1962, v. 6, no. 3p 321 332; English; suir.-aftes In Polish, Ruselan) TEM The a4thor investigates a system of t1iree nonlinear differential equationn representing the shape of an elastic rod rigidly clamped at one end and subjected at the other end to a force perf*n(ficular to the axis of the un- deformed rod. As is known, the system under Invootigation Is Integrated with the aid of elliptic integrals. The authors give certain approximate solutions of the equations, containing elementary itmctlons and Bessel functions., These approxin-kite ao"lutions are obtained by applying the method of linearization, sim- ilar to the method of harmonic linearization known from the theory of nonlinear oscillations, An error estimate Is also obtained for the approximate solutions. The case or small deformations of the rod la considered separately. Numrical Card 1/2 5/044/63/000/002/013/050 On a 11marization of the equation of .... A060/AI26 examples am cited. G, Birger and Yu. A. Smorodin (Zh. eksper. teor. fiz., J1, 1355 (1959)) as to whethw or not this experimentally measurable quantity can give certain information on the collision mechanism and the high (some Gev) and superhigh ("10 2 Gev) energy ranges. If an Incident particle (nucleon or pion) is assumed to collide, not with the whole target particle (nucleon), but only with a samll part of it (e.g., a virtual pion in the cloud) with an effective mass M* this uantity m* can be written as (p (1) - p0~ con OM ), where (1) indicates a quantity in the oi I I laboratory system, and 2:1 denotes summation not including the recoil target nucleon. 1he invariant quantity x 2 , A2 . Z2 _ 41 2 plays an Card 1/3 0 33784 P/045/62/021/002/005/007 Remarks on the "effective target B137/B102 S essential role in the field-theoretical treatment. il and A denote 0 respectively the enlrgy and momentum transfer between two groups of particles. Since x is not easy to determine experimentally, the authors a _ f _2___1 ' , derive the following r6lation between x and m*: x - m*/Y Y where 10 is the Lorentz faotor connecting the so-called S system with the laboratory system. T e S-system or minimum-momentum system is characterized by A(O~w 0, i.e., the energy transfer between two groups of 0 particles vanishes. A method for determining x from measured values of m* is given. 'The effective target mass Is examined first within the frame- work of general kinematic relations which are independent or any inter- action mechanism, then from the point of view of the one-pion exchange theory. The ratio of the effective target mass to the whole mass of the target particle is related to partial Inelasticity in a system moving in the direction of incidence. A method for determining the mirror in- elasticity from the measured recoil momentum is given. A quantum-field theoretical investigation of the target mass on the basis of the one-pion exchange model without and with pole approximation (where the "cross Card 2/3 33784 P/04 62/021/002/005/007 R-marks on the "effective target ... B137YBI02 sec,,ion" of the virtual pion is replaced by that of a real pion) is made in order to compare experimental results. According to the one-pion exchange formalism, the distribution of m* is found to be not very significant for giving information on the nucleon structure and the nucleon-nucleon collision mechanism. The propertioa of the generalized effective target mass are examined, and the relationship between the effective target mass rind the virtuality of the exchanged pion is dis- cussed. The authors thank Professor M. Danysz, Professor M. Mitsowicz and their collaborators for their interest. Ziro Koba thanks the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor 1. Infeld, and Doctor J.
