of these rocks. Therefore the authors give such characte-
ristico for the Ponetakiy basin and confirm the partici-
pution of Tournaisian and Lower Visean nodimentarl complexes
in the structure of the vouthorn parts of the Donetskiy
basin and of the northern elope of the Ukrainian massif.
The Tournainian tran egression here began by ac4i7entation
of arenaceo- loamy rocks turning over to microgrtnular lime-
stonos with interstratifications of argillites of the Cta-
I
-zone. This took place in a ehallow bay which extendeA from
south Donbass to the village Alsfirovka in a westeriy direo-
tion~ Gradually the bay expanded.and during the sedimentation
of t e Ctb -zone reached Novomoskovsk. This transgression
reached its maximum during the sedimentation of the organo-
genous limestones of the zone Ct,c . These are distributed as
Card 2/5 far as the village Kulebovka. The then occuring retrogression

of the Tournaiaian sea found its expression in the expan-
alon of the zone Ctd only in southern districts of the
Donbass (Reference 4)..The Visean-period b(,.can by a new, more
extensive transgression which expanded along the northern edge
of the mausif an far an the village Podgorodneye. In the east
the foraminiferae-algae-limestones of the zone Cva are de-
posited on shallow-water sediments of the zone Ctd near Pavlo-

grad they are deposited on the decomposed surface of the
same zone, went of Kulobovka on the weathered crust of Pro-
-Cambrian rocks. The then existing sea had a normal degrep
of salinity and a normal hydrodynamical regime. The most
shallow parts were in the farthest wont. Chemogenic limestones
with terrigenous admixtures were deposited there. Limestpes

are deponito of the recessing lawr Visean sea,, which in gr&tu-
ally becoming more shallow. Its border moved into the district
of PavloCrad. During the nedimentation of the zone Cvf the
sea receded further, that is
,,as far as Novo-Pavlovka. After
the recession of the sea there remained a nubdued swampy
plane, which was covered by vegetation and in many places
showed peat formation. To the weat there was no substitution
of the linuntones of the Of zone, as the references 1-10
are maintaining. In the coarse of the sedimentation of the
carbonate stratum mentioned in the title apart a general
depression slow fluctuating movements took place by which
abysmal sediments were relieved by sediments of the shallower
water. There could hardly have been a deviating tectonic re-
gime at the northern slope of the maneif and in the ad acent
regions at the time of the sedimentation of the zone C 1f. it

during x-ray irradiation
SOURCE: Ukrayinstkyy biokhimichnyy zhurnal, v- 37, no. 2, 19650 251-259
TOPIC TAGS: biologic metabolism, brain, x ray irradiation, experiment anivial, RNA,
DNA, radiation sickness, phosphorus, radioisotope
ABSTPACT: The content and rate of replenishnont of FUM and IXIA in the brain
of guinea pigs were investigated at different periods of development of acute
radiation siegmess induced by whole-body irradiation of the animals with a
2,000 r dose of X-rays. It was shourn that the nucloic acid composition in
i guinea pig brain varies in difforont periods of development of the actuo
fom of radiation sicknoss. For ox&iplo, even as.oarly as 30 minutes after
irradiation a drop in the MIA level is observed, which becomes more intense
at the close of tho first day* During the 2d-44.h days the MA level is
gradually rostorcd, but at the terminal stage, 3 days after irradiation, it
again decreases rli&htly.
During the first day artor irradiation a tendency Is observed toward an
incroasod JVA level, During the first day the DNA content decreases by 21.4%
coriparod -to the normal. During the 2d and 3d days the M;A level is gradually

roD-tored and a tondancy toward an increa3a is notod. BY the end of tho 4th
day tho WA loval falls off aliEhtly, and by tho end of tho 3th day this
docreaso ir. intonsifiod. The intonsity of p3z incorporation in RNA drops
sharply during tho first post-irradiation day, thon risos substantially,
oxceoding tho normal lovol by tho end of the 2d day, dropping to about one-
half by tho ond of the 3d. Radioaotive phosphorus is very- slowly incor-
poratod into RNA during tho 4th. By tho end of tho 3th day its incorporatiq
in RINA, comparod to its incorporation on tho 4th day, has risen sharply. P-104
incorporation in UIA docroarms substantdally during tho first day aftor
irradiation, and during tho Zd -- it continMO3 to drop. On the 3d day, it
risos, approaching tho normal. However, P34 incorporation in MA ii
strongly inhibited during the 3d and 5th days. Orig. art. has: 4 tables. [JPRS1

TITLE: The Larch in the Steppes of Orenburg (Listvennitsa
v Orenburgskikh stepyakh)
PERIODICAL: Pr1roda, 1959, Nr 4, pp 100-101 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author describes a rare specimen of the larch
(Lar1c sibirica Ledeb.) in the Orenburg steppe south-
east of the Ural-Tobolsk watershed, e.g. a larch
located 25 km south-east of the railway station Aydyr-
lya and 5 km north-west from Ak-Kuduk. For some re-
ligious purposes, the larch is regarded as sacred
by the local population, its origin gives rise to
various legends. Researchers of the Severo-Urall-
skaya ekspeditslya Agrolesoproyekta (North Ural Ex-
pedition of the Agrolesoproyekt) and the author tried
to establish the age of this tree by counting the
