Abstract :The conclusions from experimentation with the utilization of
mixed bread of the first generation birds of New Hampshires
and Lerhorns crosses for breading purposes are given. The
most satisfactory results as to hatchinG, postembryonic via-

the half-breed hens with cocks of the leghorn or the Russian

zygoteis from one variety to another, artificial creation of
pamvionts (?) and., finally., blood transfusion. The author
administered blood to Leghorn chickens of the same breed or
of the Now Hampshire broad, and also from wild ducks. A por-
tion of chicks of the first generation of tested groups pro-
duced unusually pigmented feathers. The chicks of the experi-

a higher percentage of experimental chicks had changed feathers

given tests showed that the ~ pure chicks did not
yield to the chicks of the Russian white breed in
egg productivity, surpassing them in live weight
at 5 months of age an average of 87.8 g (by 6-7%)
and at one year by 111.8 g (by 6~)- TT-9 5/8 pure

At 5 months of age they surpassed in weight
their contemporaries of the Russian White breed

TITLE: Biology Helps Agriculture (Biologiya - sel'skomu khozyaystvu)

ABSTRACTs Soviet biology is following Professor I.V. Michurin's prin-
ciples by not only trying to explain complex biological pheno-
mena but also by mastering them and on such a basis -to trans-
form plant and animal organisms to suit the requirements of man.
Michurin's methods led for instance to the development of new
varieties of fruit, trees which are able to stand the rough
climate of Siberia and the Urals. During the long and cold
winter, atple trees that spread on the ground are completely
covered with snow and are thus well protected against frost..
Making plants temperature-resistant is another task of Soviet
scientists. By exposing swelled seeds of corn, sugar beetsor
peasto heat until they are dry, their properties change con-
siderably and the drought-resistance is improved. The cells
of such plants are very small and their leaf surfaces very

the unprocessed ones and produce better crops. Similar methods
have been applied to make plants more salt-resistant. Cotton
seeds soaked in salt water.gave in Azerbaydzhan, on saline soil,
crops of 20 - 40 % above the local average. Soviet scientists
are pointing out the great importance of microelemente for agri-
cultural plants. Experiments conducted in the Ukraine have
shown that the use of manganese fertilizers raised crops very
considerably#
