According to the Le Chatelier equationg the ignition limit of combustible gas mixtures can be additively determined from the respective values of the individual components in pure state with oxygen or-airs nj/Nj +n 2/N2 + n3IN3+....= 1, where n,sn2."' is the separately measured lower (upper) ignition limit of the components and N11N2-1 the percentage of individual components at the lower (upper) ignition limit. Owing to the limited applicability of the Lb Chdtelier equation, it is recommended to check its accuracy in each instance by measurement. For this purpose, groups of three were formed Card 1/13 U874 B/005/60/000/007/001/001 The ignition limits ... B124/B207 froid the components mentioned the measured limit values of ignition were inttoduced into the Le Chateli'er equation. The diagrams necessary for calculation contain, however, only the results obtained with air, and not those with pure oxygen and air concentrated with oxygen. (Ref. 31 B. Lewis, G. Elbe: Combustion, Flames and Explosions of Gases, 1951, pp. 754-757). The ignition limits of the following mixtures were measured on the basis of above considerations: H -0 -CH R 0 N C R 0 R 2 2 4' .2- 2- 2P 2 2- 2- 21 C2H2_02-N2 and C 2H2-0 2-CH 4; the mixture CH 4-02-N2 was not measured, since, according to Ref. 4 (W. P. Jorissent Ind. Eng. Chem. 19. 430. 1927), the limit value between the point measured with air and oxygen gives exactly a straight line. The one part of the gas mixtures gives the ignition limit of two combustible gases in oxygen, the other part the values measured at 0-100 % dilution with nitrogen in oxygen. Measurements were made in a simple laboratory device. The gas sample is taken through a stopper with two drillings and/or the reaction products are removed; the stopper is gas-tight up to 2 atmospheres. A short connecting piece is between stopper and explosion pipet. An electric spark was used for ignition; the ignition device consists of Pt electrodes reaching into a Card 2/13 2:074 H/005/60/000/007/001/001 The ignition limits ... B124/B207 spherical space which ends in a glass tube. The latter is connected by means of vacuum rubber valve with the equilibraticn vessel which has a mercury seal. The gas mixture is conducted from the sample pipet into the spark gap; the gas is passed through a drying pipe filled with soda lime and calcium chloride. The degree of impurification of the gases used for measurement is given in Table 1; the corrections were determined on the basis of these values. Table 2 gives the results of measurement, i.e., in the first coluran the current number of the experiment, in columns II, III and IV the composition of the examined gas mixture in vol% and in column V, the result of measurement, where 11+11 denotes combustible, and 11-11 non- combustible. In each individual experiment, at least two determinations were made of one and the same gas mixture which indicates, that measure- ments are reproducible within t 0.4 vol%. The results of measurement were recorded in the form of triangular diagrams (Figs. 2-6). The upper and the lower ignition limits Of H2, CH4, C2E2 with oxygen were determined from Figs. 2, 4, and 6. Table 3 lists the values thus found and those determined from published data. A comparison shows that the measured lower limit for R2 and C2H2 is lower and the measured upper limit higher than the published data, while for CH 41 the upper limit lies lower. The ignition limits of H2 Card 3/13 21874 E/005/60/000/007/001/001 The ignition limits ... B124/B207 and C2H2 in the air can be seen from Figs. 2 and 5; Table 4 compares these values with published data. The limit values of the mixtures H2_02-CH 4 1 C2H2-O2-H2 and C2H2-02-CH4 were determined by means of the Le Chatelier equation to be able to judge its validity, and the borderline recorded in Figs. 29 49 and 6. Thust it was found that the curves for C2H2-H2 and H2-CH4 are in agreement, while a considerable deviation was found to exist in mixture C2H2-CH 49 i.e., toward the lower values. The values measured with nitrogen were also recorded (Fig. 7), and the experimental values were found to be in agreement with the calculated ones. To determine the action of nitrogen and a combustible gas upon another combustible gas, the ignition limit of the H2-CH4 mixture as a function of the CH4 content, of the H2-N2 mixture as a function of the N2 content (Fig. 8), as well as of C2H2 as a function of the E29 N2, and CH4 (Fig. 9) content was calculated and recorded. The results indicate that in the case of hydrogen and acetylene in certain cases methane is better suited as diluting gas than nitrogen. This experience is also confirmed by practical results. There Card 4/13 21874 R/005/60/000/007/001/001' The ignition limits ... B124/B207 are g.figures, 4 tables, and 6 non-Soviet,-bloc references. "The Effect of Chronic Cerebral Lesions on the Neurosecretory Activity of Albino Rats." Budapest, Kiserletes Orvostudoman , Vol XV, No 4, Aug 1963, pages 439-4415. Abstracti [Authors' German summary] The effect of chronic electrolytic cerebral lesions on the neurosecretory activity of albino rats has been investigated by the authors. The observations and results of previous re- search conducted by the authors indicate that: the neurosecretory saliva- produoiiig ability of the nerve lobes is decreased with increasing inten- sity by lesions localized above the paraventricular (P.V.) nuclei, by complete destruction of the P.V. nuclei and, furthermore, by injuries reaching the tractus supraopticohypophyseus. No deviations were observed by the destruction of the middle and dorsal hypothalamic nuclei, unilateral or partial destruction of P.V. nuclei, lesions behind the level of these nuclei on the hypothalamic-thalamic border, and high tha3arda lesions. 7 Hungarian, 21 Western references. 9 Fz~patitis Hospital of laci Stre-t ItRiaks cl, Diagaostic AJ:L"rel? &Gpblas." HETIL. 1958, 99/14 (475-4B0) Tabl-~,s 4 The liver extract therapy was tried in 136 patients with chronic hepatitis, all stages of cirrhosis of the liver and fatty hypertrophy of the liver. The success of the therapy depends directly on its early initiation. Typical acute hepatitis is not suitable for liver extract therapy; it is without success in most cases and can even be harmful; it seems to be active, however, in persistent hepatitis and in acute hepatitis complicated by ascites. The daily dose for adults is 5 ml. i.v. No definite prescriptions as to total quantity are given, although small quantities like 200 to 300 ml. are hardly active. In isolated cases total doses of 800 to 2000 ml. may be required. Failure usually depends on false indications or on inaccurate (usually insufficient) dosages. The activity of the liver extract can sometimes be attributed to its purin - and pyrimidin. - content, but at other times to still unknown substances. The author regards the introduction of this watery liver extract in the therapy of liver diseases as a significant advance. In his opinion additional results can be ex- pected from this method. j.~ ------- I--- ------ 4-_ IASZ.10, Barnabas, Dr. Water metabolism in diabetes insipidus during acute hepatitis, Orv. hetil. 99 no.31*,1073-1075 3 Aug 58. 1. Abstract:[Authors' English sun=x-y modified] Carotene oil produced by fer- mentation with Blakeslea trispora, in the Institute, was tested in biologi- cal experiments. Hampshire chicks were fed from birth a vitamin A and caro- tene-free diet. After a three-weekexcretion period, carotene or equivalent quantities of vitamin A and carotene have been introduced by sondage into the digestive system of the animals. The preparation, which contained ?0-75 per cent A-carotene, was readily resorbed. The peak value of vitamin A in the liver was reached in 24-28 hours when 35-40 per cent of the introduced carotene could be demonstrated as vitamin A in this organ. Significant quantities of this converted vitamin were present in the liver 380 hours later. The experiments have shown that carotene oil was more readily re- sorbed and converted to vitamin A than the viater-soluble vitamin A acetate used for comparison. 12 Western, 3 Hungarian references. Abstract [Authors' Hungarian summary, modified]: Authors destroyed the stalk of the hypophysis by means of the Horsley-Clarke apparatus, and studied the water balance of rats with stalk lesion over several vacks. They noted that the urine production of these rats after a month or tuo returns to noriral,mn-operated rats. There is, however, a polyuria re- action i=ediately after the operation. The cessation of this diabetes- parent. The data indicato that insiDidus-like state, however, is only ap U there is no return to the production of anti-diuretic hormone several weeks after the operation, so that the cessation of increased diuresis is to be attributed first of all to the reduction of the glQmerulus filtration, though other factors may also be present. Abs~raqt: [Authors' Hungarian summary] In intact rats, spirolactone treatment does not affect the quantity of voided urine and the sodium, potassium and creatinine content of the urine significantly in case of oral administration of tap water. If however saline is given orally, more sodium is excreted upon spirolactone treatment and the quantity of urine and the sodium/potarsium ratio rise. These effects do not appear in rats, sevoral weeks after they had been hypophysectomized, not even if they had received prior cortisone or adrenocorticotrophic hon-one treatment. it is known that spirolactone exerts its-renal effect only in the presence of aldosterone. Accordingly, these results show that animals no longer possess sufficient aldosterone levels several weeks. Budapest, Kiserletes Orvostudomavz, Vol XV, No 4, Aug 1963, pages 423-430. Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] The changes in the pituitary volume, after destruction of the stalk, have been investigated by the authors. A decrease in the total pituitary volume i-ras found. In the adeno-pituitary, extensive postoperative necrosis has been observed. Later, the volume of the adeno-pituitary decreased considerably due to fibrotic necrosis. Hypertrophy of the intact pituitary area could not be demonstrated, while a regeneration of the portal vessels was evident. The medial lobe showed no significant volume change in an absolute sense, a relative hypertrophy was seen a few weeks later. The nerve-lobe greatly decreased in size. The experiments indicate that, after stalk destruction, the portal vessel con- nections are regenerated but regeneration and volume increase of the in- tact part of the pituitary do not take place. The reduction of the living pituitary tissue may play a role in the decreased function of the gland. 1 Hungarian, 23 Western references. 1/1 KOVACS, K.; DAVID, Margit A.; LASZLO, F.A Mechanism of the "regression" of dial~etes insipidus after pitaitary stalk lesions in rats.
