fractional distillation in an electric arc2

TOPIC TAGS: trace analysis, electric are, fractional distillation, spectrum analysis
ABSZUNCT.o~~ The method presented by the authors'is suitable for a
series analyses of trace elements contained in various mater-
ials. The process is fast; 30 analyses can be made in 8 hours.
Accuracy of the method is similar to that of the polarographic
method. The analysis is based on rates of evaporation of trace
,elements in an are; each element has an individual rate of ovapo-
ration. The distillation is made from a deep crater of a carbon
electrode which is modified to resemble a miniature resistance
furnace. Volatile -elei~onts are ovaporated and deposited at the edge of tho'e-ra-ter.
The spectrwa is simple arA contains only lines of individual ad=Lxtures. The apparatiis,
its operation and calibration are described. Orig. art. has: 2 figurea and 2 tables*'

TITLE: Production of boron hydrides of alkali metals
PERIODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal. Xhimiya, no.,17, 1962, 357-358t
abstract 17K4Q (Hungarian patent 148272, June 1, 1961)
TEXT: Hydrogenation of alkali metals is comparatively simple and rapid in
mixers running at a small number of revolutions (80-180 r.p.m.) and at
comparatively low temperatures (180-220()C), if.petroleum distillation
products (spindle oil or kerosine) are used as the dispersion medium. In
certain cases, the use of emulsifiers may then be omitted. The hydrogena-
tion time is reduced also. Impurities are easily removed and a high purity
boron hydride is obtained if the solution formed is evaporated to an alkali
.concentration of 40-50. Sodium boron hydride is obtained from a solution
of alkali metal hydrides by well-known methods (treating with methylborate).
It is washed, neutralized and extracted. (Abstracter!o note: Complete

TITLE: The Problem of Organic Reagents for Osmium A
PERIODICAL: Zhurnal analiticheskoy khimii, 1960, Vol. 15, No 4;
PP. 505 - 506
TEXT: L. Chugayev (Ref, 1) showed that a red color appears when
solutions containing osmium. in the form of OsO 4 or chlorosmate are
heated in the presence of thiourea and some drops of LZI, due. to the
formation of the compound IOS(H 2N - CS - NH 2)61 C13 .H 20~ Z, Bardod6j
(Ref. 5) regards >CS as the functional-analytical grou for Os and Ru V/
He found that OsO V together with (H 2N)2CS, CS(NHC6H 5%" and
H2NCSNHNH 2' gives a red color, and with H2 NCSNHC6H 5' CS(NHCH 3)2~
SC[N(CH 3)212Y NH 4SCN, and NaCSN(C2H 5)2 a violet colc~ The authors
aimed at studying the reactions of osmium with two substituted thiourea

derivatives: 4-acetyl amino benzaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (1) and
4-nitrobenzaldehyde semicarbazone (II), Compound I is used for the
treatment of tuberculosis, under the name "Tebezon" or TB1 Reagent i
is used as a 0.1% solution in 1% NaOH, and reagent II, as a 0,05%
solution in 1% NaOH, Both solutions are used when still fresh, Under
the above-described conditions, osmium, together with reagent I. forms
a brown precipitate which dissolves after the addition of ethyl allcohol
to a yellow-brown solution whose color depends on the osmium concentra-
tion, A red-brown solution results from reagent II after the addition
of ethyl alcohol. A perpendicular Pulfrich photometer was used to
determine osmium~ The maximum optical density was obtained in both
cases with the filter M43 (4360 A)., The results are given in a table
and in Figs. 1 and 2. When using reagent I it is possible to determine
1 ~ 2 - 14,.7 f Os/ml, and wi th reagent 11, 0, 49 - 6 60 t Os/ml, Bo th
reagents are more sensitive than thiourea which permits the determinatic'n
of 8 - 40 rOs/ml. The increase in 5ensitivity may be explained by the
presence of the nitro group causing an increase of the polarity of
groups in the pars. position. There arp 2 figures 1: table. -rind
