In lieu of the classical substation, "Simple net" type and "mixed phasell type

TITLE: An Experimental Study of the Combustion of Two-phase
Mixtures in a Turbulent Plow /

TEXT: Results are offered of an experimental study made of the propagation
characteristics of a flame and the expansion of the combustion zone of a
two-phase kerosene-air mixture. The investigations were carried out in
1953 - 1956. The first section of the present paper deals with experimental
methods, and in this connection the jet diagram of Fig. 1 and the tempera-
ture field diagram of Fig. 2 are treated in greater detail. A report is
further made on visual estimations of the flames made with the aid of
photographs, and Fig. 3 shows the burning-out curves, while Fig. 4 offers
jet photographs, and Fig- 5 is a graph illustrating the temperature of the
gas near the nonburning drops as a function of the air excess. The authors
finally examine the turbulent propagation rate of the flame@'and with the
aid of Fig. 6 show the propagation rate of the flame and the pulsation rate

of theflow as a function of the air excess. Pig. 7 shows the reduced
velocity of the turbulent flame propagation as a function of mixture com-
position and oxygen concentration. Pig. 8 illustrates the reduced velocity
of the turbulent flame propagation as a function of the mixture tempera-
ture. In the diagrams of Figs. 9 to 12, the combustion times are drawn as
functions of different parameters and burning conditions. It is noted in
the summary that, unlike homogeneous mixtures, the fuel drops can be ignit-
ed by heat waves which propagate from burning to nonburning drops. The
burning times are relevantly dependent on the size of the fuel drops and
on the temperature of the mixture. There are 12 figures and 3 references:

TITLE: On simulating combustion chambers of gas turbine
engines

TEXT: During model study of condittons in combustion chambers it
is necessary to ensure the identity of their main indices with the
actual chamber, such as the coefficient of complete combustion,
air surplus in the case of flame cut-o*ut 'with va--ious mixtures,
and also the coefficient of resistance. -@he realization of simila-
rity of processes can be ensured with geometrical likeness, as
well as hydrodynamic analogy and course of mixing and combustion
in the model and chamber. The author gives a mathematical analysis
of the process, where the -trajectory of drops is being considered.
In the case of centrifugal injection equipmentg,,-the equation of
K.N. Yerastov is utilized. The fuel drops evaporate, mix with air

and burn. To obtain the likeness of these processes in :eometrical-
ly similar chambers, it is necessary to ensure equal iny
bervals
of time for evaporation, mixing and combustion in respect to dura-
tion of trajectories. Examination of the combustion zone structure
revealed that flow of gases in the chamber is modelled according to
the Reynolds coefficient. The fields of dimensionless speeds at va-
rious sections of combustion zone obtained for different air speeds
without a turbulent device is illustrated. It is impossible to
have a simultaneous realization-of all conditions of simulation.
The time of preparing the mixture (evaporation and mixing) plus X
the interval of chemical reaction should not exceed the time when
the former is in the combustion zone. According to D.N. Vyrubov,
the time of evaporating paraffin is quite short. Later experiments
by V.Ye. Doroshenko and A.I. Nik;itskiy revealed that characteris-

chambers, described by the author, and the results confirm the va-
lidity of the proposed method. Additional experimental verifica-
tion is required before applying this procedure to gas turbines
with heavier fuels, where preliminary heating of the latter is ex-
pedient. Application of data quoted can be as a basis for selec-
ting speed conditions and dimensions of newly projected chambers VK
that are similar in design. Tuning combustion chambers with new
arrangements can take place in small models with less expenses in
means and time. There are 7 figures.

TITLE: Improving efficiency of gas turbines by reducing radial
gap of axial compressors

rotor blades. Experiments were conducted in spray-metaUizing the
tips of the blades using aluminium. and graphite powder. The
results of these experiments, carried out at the Nevskiy
mashinostroytellnyy zavod imeni V.I.Lenin (Neva Machinery Works
imeni V.I.Lenin), were reported by,Engineer S.A.Zalis at the
Session of the Committee for Metallization of the Nauchno-
tekhnicheskaya obshchestva. mashinostroyeniya (Scientific-technical
Society of Machinery). The material had the Brinell hardness 12
to 14 and was automatically ground down to correct size when the
rotor was rotated inside the casing. It was found that the

with 0.001* accuracy. The Cp value was accurate to 0.5%. For the
purpose of comparison, CP was also measured in Acheson graphite, C-3
domestic graphite, and acetylenr black Hpat capacity was found to
vary in the sequencel diamon 1< as < acetylene black < carbyne.

Heat capacity of all nine carbyne samples was significantly higher
than that of graphite, although different in each sample. This
difference in C p from one carbyne sample to another was correlated with
the different ratio of the chain to lamellar structure, i.e., with
partiaL--cross-linking of carbon chains. The samples with highest Cp
were assumed to have a low degree of cross-linking, therefore to be
nearly linear carbon polymers, since the value of n in the formula
Cp - ATII was nearly 1 for these samples. The n value for other samples
was 1,2-1.5. Therefore, it was concluded that the products synthe-
sized as described were different from graphite and had a lamellar-
