TITLE: Strength Calculations on Headers for Steam Boilers
(Raschet na prochnost' kollektorov parovykh kotlov)
PERIODICAL: Teploenergetitca, 1958, Vol-5, No.1, pp. 40 - 44 (USSR).
ABSTRACT: At present, strength calculations on cylindrical chambers
of steam boilers are made according to the limiting load, that
is, the pressure at which the metal becomes plastic. The
formula used to determine wall thickness is given: it can be
derived from the fourth energy theory. It would be logical to
determine the strength factor also by -the fourth theory.
However, in the standards the strength factors in the longi-
tudinal and transverse bridSes of metal between holes are det-
ermined by the first theory of strength, and the corresponding
strength factor in a sloping metal bridge by the third theory,
from the condition of maximum tanLential stresses.
The Central Boiler Turbine Institute (TsKTI) has proposed a
formula to determine the strength factors of the bridges on
the basis of the fourth theory of strength. It is assunied that
the stress in the metal bridges is made uniform by slight
Cardl/4 plastic yield. Calculations by this formula (2) are very

laborious and have been embodied in a nomogram, given in Fig.2.
'd it is
Uomparative calculations have shwn that by this metho _L
possible to economise 4-50/o of steel used in headers for boilers;
for super-high and super-critical pressures the economy of
metal can be 10-11%.
To verify the method of calculation, experimental determinations
of strength factor were made at the Moscow Power Institute.
These were hydraulic tests, with a compressor capable of
giving 6 000 atm., made on chambers manufactured by the Tagan og
Boil er Works (Taganrogskiy Zavod) from pipe of diameter
2?3 x 29 mm.,made of steel Ct.20. A specimen is shown in Fig. 3.
After the unions had been welded to the chambers and hydraulically
tested, they were subjected to recrystallisation, then annealed
to remove remanent stress. Samples of metals used for mechan-
ical tests were welded to the chamber and heat-treated with it.
The mechanical test results are given. The limiting pressure
was that at which the plastic strain was 0.2% in the particular
metal bridge examined. The strength factor was determined as
the ratio of this pressure to the limiting pressure for the
whole chamber. Table 1 gives experimental data for chambers

compared with calculations by Soviet, American and Czech
formulae and by Formula (2) of this article. Experimental
values of the strenGth factors are somewhat higher than the
calculated values. Formula (2) Cives the nearest results.
CorrespondinG values are Eiven in Table 2 for the case Then
the holes are in parallel rows. In this case, the strength
factors obtained by all the standard methods coincide.
So long as the metal of the union is not plastic it strengthens
the bridge. In the strength determinations, the thickness of
the unions was so chosen that they became plastic first; there-
fore, the resulto correspond to the conditions assumed in the
standards.
The stress condition in a bridge working in the elastic region
differs from that which we have assumed. The assumption is
endorsed by experiment only when the metal becomes plastic.
It was confirmed experimentally that in the middle of longi-
tudinal and transverse rows of brid-es the main stresses are
axial and tangential. Ilear the unions, the main stresses were
in some cases inclined 8 - 20 deUrees to the axis of the
chamber.
In the Central Boiler Turbine Institute (TsKTI) tests were made

holes. Most of the investigations were made with bridges
arranged in longitudinal rows. In this case, all the standards
and formulae give similar values for the strength coefficient.
There was good agreement between experiment and theory. The
exnerimental values of the strength coefficients are equal to
or a little higher than the value given by Formula (2), which
is accordingly recoraTiended for practical use.

ABSTRACT: In the factory imeni Illicha in Zhdanov4 tests were
carried out with building blocks taking into con-
sideration the problem of hardening and the decreas-
ing of a specific weight. These blocks were made of
termozit-concrete. Tests were made with cubes 20Ox
200x2OOmm which were steam cured and after that pro-
tected in dry air conditions. The cubes were made
from the following ingredients: -Ground lime (according
to GOST No 5803-51), calcium chloride (AccordinZ to
GO;3T 450-41 and finely ground granulated slafr. To
achieve an activated mix granulated slag is used with
the content of 4qo SaO+MgO and 4-6.5%'of KnO. Its
granulometric composition is given in Table 1. Table

"Contributory Data on the Relationship Between the Trophic llonqone Production
and 32p Metabolism of the Anterior Pituitary I. The Effect of Thyroxine
Treatment, Yethylthiouracil Treatment and Thyroldectomy on the 32F Meta-
bolism and 02 Consumption."
Budapest Acta Physiologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae, Vol XXX,
No 1, 194, pages 45-52.
Abstract: (English article, authors' English summary modified] It was shown
by experiments using male albino rats that the 24 hour uptake of 32P by
the anterior and posterior pituitary, and the 02 consumption by the anterior
pituitary in vitro, were decreased by thyroxine treatment (20 Vg of LaRoche
tbyroxine twice daily for 10 days). An opposite change occurred in response
to thyroidectomy and methylthiouracil treatment (5 mg daily for 10 days).
After thyroxine treatment, the ~2p content in the lipid-soluble fraction
(expressed in I of the total uptake by the lobe) was increased, whereas it
was decreased in the acid-soluble and RNA fractions. An opposite effect was
achieved by methylthiouracil treatment and by thyroidectomy; i.e. as com-
pared with the controls, the 32p content decreased in the lipid-soluble
fraction and increased in the acid-5oluble and RNA fractions. No appreciable
change in the 32p content of the DNA fraction was observed in any of the
cases. 5 Eastern European, 14 Western references. [Manuscript received

Orig Pub: Fogorv. szemle, 1956, 49, No. 109 314-318
Abstract: Leptothrichia found in tap water are similar to
phosphataseactive Leptothrichia inoculated from
carious dentine. According to Lyudvig's inves-
tigations, Leptothrichia can decompose carbohy-
drates with formation of acid, which indicates
their ability to decalcify tooth substance.
The author established a relationship between
food bacteria, drinking water, and development
of the carious process.-- D.S. Silbershteyn.

ORIG. PUB. Novanytermeles, 1957, 6, No. 3, 233-238
ABSTRACT During the study of the interrelationship of the "spring
pathogenic biotyps of the amt and two Hungarian variot-
ies of wiater wheev, parabiontia conaectioa between them
was discovered at the Budapest Institute of Flant Proteo
tion and tlie Agricultural Institute in Kompolt. It was
found that the ablontic relation is a .consequence of
the hyperergic supersensitive) reaction of the host
plant. As the result of the supersensitive reaction of
the hoot plant, the pathogen perishes and the developmen
of the disoase stops. F. Yu. Grabart

Thirty cases of tetanus, which had not been treated with serum, were examined.
The microscopical findings showed a lack of uniformity. Therefore it is concluded
that no specific histological pattern characteristic for tetanus exists. The
authors reject all the previous theories on the matter except that of Speransky,
saying that the 'specific feature of tetanus toxin is its capacity for creating a
characteristic and constant form of complex neural reaction merely by a pathological
stimulation of the peripheral nervous system'. ZaAsch - Graz (V,8)
