TITLE: Some characteristics of jet streams over the Pacific
Ocean's north-western part
PERIODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal, Geofizika, no, 1, 1962, 49, ab-
stract 1B317 (Tr. Dallnevost. n.-i. gidrometeorol,
in-ta, no. 12, 1961, 45-51)
TEXT: The results are given for observations during tile third
voyage of the expedition ship 11A~ I. Voyeykov" from Jantary 9 to
February 22, 1960. The material relates to two periods. The first
covers soundings from January 19 to February 9 during th,,, ship's
movement from north to south; their results are presented in a
space-time section from 450N, 1600E to 100N, 1500E. The sounding..
from February 10 to 20 -- made during the ship's movement from 0
south to north and presented in a section from 100N, 1500E to 42 N
1330E -- refer to the second period. In the first section a power-
ful subtropical jet stream with a wind speed of 150 m/sec is found

at a height of 12 km in the zone 30 - 33 off. It corresponds to an
intense tropospheric front in which the temperature contr!iEt rea-
ches 2.40/100 km at a height of 6 km and 5.30/100 km at ,in alti-
tude of 8 km. Another jet-utream nucleus with a wind velocity of
about 70 m/Bec at the center is observed at 22 - 24 ON at a height
of 13 km. This is likewise a subtropical Jet stream which has wea
kened and moved southwards. The i,reserved but latitudinally small
tropospheric-front zone, in which the temperature contrast equalu-
3.10 per 100 km, also corresponds to it. At a height of 7 - 11 km
between the extra- and subtropical jet streams the wind speed de-
clines to 45 m/sec while keeping a westerly direction. The sanze de-
crease in the wind velocity, but with a change in the direction,
is also observed to the south of the second subtropical je-;.. S'tart-
ing from 20 - 240N in the lower layers and from 190N, too, at a
height of 8 - 15 km south-we8terly air streams change into souther-
1,~es and south-easterlies. In addition the velocity of the s,juth-
easterly flow grows with altitude, and a comparatively nar:-ow zo--
of south-easterly winds with a speed of about 30 m/sec 13 found iii

the 13 - 16 km laier in the area of 16 - 17 ON. This is a soith-
easterly jet stream, formed on the south-western periphery :)f
the Pacific Ocean anticyclone; depending on the measure of the
veaael'Ei southwards movement and on its withdrawal towards the
southern periphery of the anticyclone, the jet stream ga,ie place
to a purely easterly flow with a wind velocity of 10 - 12 m/sec-
The lower boundary of the jet stream is situated at an average.
height of 5 km. In the tropospheric-front region, however, espec-
ially on the first section, the descent of the lower boundary of
the jet stream to a height of 2 - 3 km was observed. The growth
of the wind speed to the heart of the jet is noted from th(! 5 km
level. The unusual intensity of the subtropical jet itream is men-
tioned, This is explained by the deveLopment of a deei, c.-clone in
the observational zone, with ;resuureu of down to 946 mb rit lt~;
-.e,iter. SUch an intense process over the ocean was also ac,-ompan-
ied by the abrupt meridionality of the air streams above the land,
This in its turn promoted the formation of an unusual'Ly intense
hi-h-altitude frontal zone and a powerful subtropical jet atream

TITLhs Phase diagram and outflow pressure of potassium nitrate
PERIODICALt Zhurnal neorganicheskoy khimii, v. 8, no. 2, 1963, 371; - 378
TEXT: The plotting of compression and expansion curves during compression
by means of a mechanical Gagarin press is described. In a cylindrical press-
mold a pressure of 15-103 kg/CM2 is applied to the*substance, compr-?ssing
it to maximum density. Then the pressure is removed, the opening of the
mold is covered with a lubricant and the sample is tossed several times in-
side the mold to reduce friction and external stresses. After this the
sample is again subjected to pressure, the compressions and expansions
being recorded. Voith substances that unaergo polymorphic transformations
due to the pressure, hysteresis loops occur as a result of the change in
specific volume. The process allows a simplified investigation of the p
versus T phase diagrams of crystalline polymorphic substances. The p
versus T diagram for KNO, was plotted and found to coincide with th2 data
by P. W. Bridgman (Proc. Acad. arts and Sciences, 51, 599 (1916)). The
