found in Czechoslovak tick encephalitis among wliich patients only 6
(14.3%) had normal EEGs. There were no EEG changes specific for
encephalitis. Four EEGs, 7 tables; 6 Czech, I Soviet and about 30

A13STRACT: In the gLa plant of the department for refractories of the Nizhniy
Tagil Metallurgical t.)mbine there was a shortage of gas. In 1953
it was aaswuea that the gas plirt had reached the limit of its
efficiency and that it would have to be enlarged. From 1954 onnaras,
however, the following work was carried out in order to improve the
efficiency of thf gas plant. 1.) By enlarging the coal shaft &nd the
bucket conveyor, fuel conveyance was inoreased from 100 to 200 t/24
hours and an additional bunker for 60 m3 was erectedi 2.) A magnetic
separator was mounted for the purpose of catching parts of iron in
the fuel; M The number of revolutions of the feed dnmn was in-
orcaaad from 60 to 120 per hourj 4.) The blast pressure ms in-
creased from 250 to 400 mm torr; 5.) Three additional air blast
a regates were established, so that a reserve was available;

purification plant. The data comparing gasification before and after
reoonstruotion are given in a table. In this waY it was possible to

expenses amounted to onlY 10,~ of those which would have been

Title : Experimental comparative characteristics of the immunizing activity
of dysentery vaccines prepared from freshly isolated an-! production
strains

Abstract : A detailed description is given of experiments designed to compare
the immunogenic action of freshly isolated and standard production
strains of Flexner dysentery bacteria. The freshly Isolated strains
were obtained from 144 patients at the Krasnosovetakays, hospital, and
the standard strains from the collection of the (Central] State Con-
trol Institute of Vaccines and Sera. RAhaustive tests (tabulated on
five full-page charts) showed that heat-inactivated, formalin vaccines
prepared from both types of strains had almost identical immunizing
characteristics when injected into mice and guinea pigs. No references
cited.

Abstract Immunization of animals with a vaccine prepared from strains with low
virulence and Immunogenicity in doses of 500 million organisms had no
effect on the elimination of dysentery bacteria from their organisms
when compared with control animals for 17-20 days. Immunization with
highly virulent strains or with larger doses resulted in complete
elimination of dysentery bacteria from mice with 7-10 days. The ex-
periments are described In detail. No references are cited.
