PURPOSE: This book is intended for students specializing in nuclear
and theoretical physics. It may also be used by students and
instructors of general physics.
COVERAGE; The book presents an introduction to the theory of
elementary particles. It includes basic experimental data on
elementary particles and their transformations in electromagnetic,

strong, and weak interactions. Data on the decay of particles
are presented along with the decay laws. The more important
research on nucleon structure to reviewed, and polarization
effects and symmetry properties of elementary particles are
described. The important principles and basic aspects of the
elementary particle theory are examinedgand the concepts of
isotopic spin, strangeness, and production and annihilation
operators are explained. A scheme for calculating the trans-
ition probability in particle scattering according to the
quantized field theory is presented. The material is based on
the monograph, Vvedenlye v teoriyu kvantovannykh poley (Intro-
duction to the Quantized Field Theory) by N. N. Bogolyubov
and D. V. Shirkov, but does not include data on elementary
particles published since 1959. The author thanks V. S.

TITLE: "Magnetic charges" and the dual covariance of the equations of
electrodynamics
PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk BSSR, V. 7, no. 2, 1963, 83 - 86
TEXT: As has been previously shown, a dissyT=etry of the electron in ex-
cess of m:c:. must lead to interactions lower by C,.2 times as compared to the clas-
sical one, where cnxis the constant of the fine structure, the dissymmetry of the
classical electron being m The in easej dissymmetry a: w can be ascribed
to the appearance of the trivector 31. efirleie~l where m is the area of antisym-
metry. Thus, the problem of examining the electrodynamics appears which con-
siders the possibility of a dissymmetry of electric charges. An arbitrary con-
travariant tensor al"1-0"m is transformed to some of its dual tensors:

is obtained, where a,~ is the potential corresponding to the Lagrangian intro-
duoed. Thus, together with the electric charges and currents expressed by the
tetradimensional vector jj~~, the physical value with the symmetrya:,.~.
should exist in the case of the assumed influence of the orientability of space-
tim; on the electromagnetic processes and, consequently, of the covariance with
respect to the dual transformations (2.3). The component J[lmn] where lmn - 1,
2, 3 corresponds to what is usually termed magnetic charge, with the spherical
symmetry J[lmOj reserved by the magnetic current. If the electric charge and
current distriBution is such that It possesses the dissymmetry m:z4-the trivector
appears in electrodynamics and corresponds to the "magnetic" charges and
currents. In particular, it can be shown that the dissymmetr7.a:aoappears in
the bremsstrahlung of electric systems having the symmetry mjA. A. V. Shubnikov
and A. A. Pistoltkors are mentioned.

PERIODICAL: Akademiya Kauk BSSR. Doklady. ve 7# no, 4. 1965.. 233-236
MU: The authors consider whether it is possible to formulate a new approach
to the covariant description of the fields of elementary particles that would not
presuppose specific non-Galilean coordinates, but would operate with Galilean
coordinates of local (contacting) spaces. It is shown by means of mathematical
formulas that this approach ensues naturally from the theory of asymmetrical
Loretz connectedness,, as a generalized tetradic formulation of the general theory
of relati-vity. The most important English-language reference reads as follows:

ABSTRACT: Einstein's use of non-Galileian coordinates x sup u causes considerable
difficulty- The authors replace these by the field of x sup m -systems, through
utilization of generalized transformation of the physical tetrads during parallel
displatement.in X sub 4 from point to point, leading to generalization of the
connection of the tangent Minkowski spaces described in tetrad formulation by
means of Ricci rotation coefficient.-%. Hence this variant is naturally called
-generalized tetrad formulation of the G.R.T." In each E sub 4 we can trannferra
x sup m-coordinates to any arbitrary curvilinear or Galileian x sup m prime
coordinates. A comparison is given between two variants of.tetrad formulation
of the G.R.T.

ABSTRACT: The'covariance of the equations of electrodynamics in the presence
of free charges and currents, with respect to dual transformations, can be
regarded as's corollary of the orientability of the physical tetrad, The
authors conclude that their 8 equations are obviously covariant not only under
the Lorentz' transformations, but also undp-r dual transformations. Thus,
alongside of the electric charges and currents expressed by the four-dimensional
vector j sup m which defines the vector e sub o of the physical tetrad, there
must exist.the physical quantity j sub lmn in the case of the supposed influence
of space-time orientability on electric processes. Conversely, as soon as this

ABSTRACT: The authors present the basic ideas for a new approach to the theory of
attraction with use of tetrad formalism. In the first section they introduce the
tetrad connected with a curvilinear system of coordinates, consider infinitely
amall transformation of tetrads and their partitions, describing on the one hand
deformation, on tho othor hand, rotation of the tetrad. Further, the authors con-
struct a theory of asymmetric Lorentz connoctednoss corresponding to the gravita-
tional field. From the generalized tetrad formulation 5f the general theory of
relativity the Einstein equations as equations for g " fall out and the role of
potentials must be played by some other quantity whose determination and justifi-
cation is dealt with by the fifth and sixth sections of this work. The concluding
section contains a comparison of the tetrad and generalized tetrad formulations of
the theory of attraction and alBo a remark on Petrov classification in tetrad-ifo
lationa of the theory Mi.

TEXT: In all aerogeodetic centers of the OM (gain Administration of
Geodesy and Cartography) bromium gelatine photoplates are sprinkled upon
the tables introduced by V. I. Kazanovioh. In this paper the drawbacks
of this method are pointed out. In the photogrammetric workshop of the
NAGP these drawbacks were eliminated by zonst oting a sprinkling desk

capacity of 900 kcal/hour. This consT-ru-c-fl-onwas developed and put into
operation by the three authors. The apparatus is described here in short.
According to a suggestion made by the senior photo-laboratory assistant
P. Ye. Shulyak two ventilators of the type NV-4 were set up below the
vaporizer. The apparatus was installed in March 1959, and has been oper-
ating without any troubles. There are 2 figures.

In this study, the author discusses the biological properties of the
L-forms of Vibrio metchnikovil and Proteus vulgaris, obtained by him
with the use of penicillin. His conclunions arc as follows:
1. L-forms of Vibrio metchnikovil and Proteus vulgaris may be obtai-
ned in most cases, using penicillin in doses of 50, 100, 200, and 500
units per ml. of culture medium. The nutrient medium used by the author
consisted of 1% of Hottinger agar (pH7.4-'F.6) and 15-20% of normal horse
serum.
2. The cultural characteristics of L-forms differed sharply from
the cultural characteristics of the initial culture. L-forms grDwn on

1% agar medium formed small, dense, ingrowing colonies; those t7own
on semisolid media looked like a whitish mucold film.
3. The morphological structure of the L-forms of Vibrio metchnikovii
and Proteus vulgaris was characterized by the presence of vacuolized and
non-vacuolized 'globular corpuscles, vacuoies, and minute granular for-
mations.
4. The biological characteristics of Vibrio metchnikovii and Proteus
vuigaxis were slightly different compared to those of the initiai cultu_
res; they were marked by weakened biochemical and antigenic properties
as well as by lesser virulence.
5. Experimentation on white mice has demonstrated the ability of
L-forms Proteus vulgaris to revert in the organism to the initial
highly virulent form (in 25% of the animals).

ABSTRACT: Lysogenlcity of bacterial cells is generally thought to be an Inherited
characteristic, a conclusion supported by the fact that bacterial variants with mod-
:ified cell walls, such as L-forms and spberoplasts, do not lose their ability to 00,
produce phage.L*The authors have studied this phenomenon in L-form cultures of 4p/,r~
.Salmonetra-7y-phi~and S. typhimuriwn as well as in spheroplasts of S. typhimmy-fum

1the variant bacteria for inductive production of phage was tested by illuminating.
the cultures with ultraviolet light. It was found that both the*spheroplasts and
'the L-forms retained their ability for spontaneous phage production, but inductive
phage production was affected. Only one culture of the penicillinated spheroplasts
;and the L-form culture of S. typhi were found to retain inductive phage production.
Although thereason for the loss of this ability by the majority of the cultures is
,not clear, it is believed to be connected in some way to the cultural conditions
during illumination and to changes undergone by the bacterial cells during this pro-
cess. The retention of prophage by both the spheroplasts and the L-forms shows that
.the bacterial cbromosomes, where the phage is localized, are not affected by the
processes leading to spheroplast and L-form formation and provides further evidence
;for the genetic character of lysogenicity.

ABSTRACT: The influence of ethylalcohol and acetone on the adsorption
of microaLmounts of C8137 and SrS9 by ultramarine, iron oxic~e,
barium sulfate and titanium dioxide-in water at room temperature
was investigated. It was found that the addition of non-aqueous
solvents usually increases the adsorption of the microcomponents,
sometimes even more than 10-fold. Only in the adsorption of
cesium on barium sulfate was the adsorption decreased by the
addition of ethylalcohol or acetone to the aqueous solution.
The experimental conditions were varied within the following

Abstract : Radiographic methods have beien used in investigating the
structure in the supcrcooled and crystalline state of
thymol (I), naphthylamina (II), piperine (III), codeine
(rv), glucoce (V), and piperonal (VI). It war, found
that It II, and VI are easily ouiercoolod; in the super-
cooled state these conpowids exhibit some degree of Mole-
cular ordering, but longe-range order is considerably im-
paired, the degree of this impairment being a measure of
