Spe-- cial attention was paid to the Geiger counter. In the entire nuclear physics there is scarcely a second appara- tus which works as safely and quietly. It works, however, blind. It does not "see" what is recorded by it. In the present paper a series of apparatus is shortly described which are very often used in nuclear :)h~rzic_-. Therc is a device by means of which the particles can be scen. Ru- therford rof erred to this device as "the rest orilrinal and wonderful instrument in the hiutory of science". 7his is the Wilson Chamber. There are various con-itructiorsof this chamber %'figure I - fourth page of the cover). 'A"he principle remains, however, the same. Skobelltsyn, Card 114 Academician, worked a lot with these chambers and auggested* Chasing the Invisible an interesting improvemont which is also called nfter him (figure 2, fourth page of the cover). There is alvo a chamber of very simple construction, the eiffusion caac- ra. The most wonderful one is, however, the controlled Wilson chamber. The first recording n:)paratus of r-azzlear radiation was the photoplate. The photonuthod van, how. ever. replaced by more correct measuring mcthode. Only the papers by the Soviet scientists L. V. ~!yaovskiy and L. P. Zhdanov used again photoplates in modurn science. In "he very beginning of the development of nuclear physics the English scientist constructed a very simple and convenient apparatus - the apinthariecope - by neans of which parti- cles were observed at that time. Numerous interesting dis- coveries were made by means of this apparatus. kfter a cer.- tain time tne spinthariscope was, however, forgotten. Only as late an 1947 the scintillation method was used again. At that time mighty apparatus were constructed which trans- form the photoonergy into electronic energy. Their work re- minds of the avalanche of electrons formed in the Geiger counter. The indisputable advantages of the scintillation Card 2/4 counters have made them famous. They are now used in the Chasing the Invisible Card 3/4 27-58-6-6/ig laboratories to nuch an extent that they beein to re- place ionization apparatus. There in also a recording device which is often mistaken for the scintillation apparatus. This Is the cryntal counter vhich according to its principle reminds of the ionization a,)paratus and is at the sane tinn similar to the .--cintillation counter. In nuclear physics aluays several measuring methods are necessary in order to be able to control at any tine. The counter by Cherenkov neasurez excel- lently and very accurately the velocities of particles. One of the moot ingenious apparatus in nuclear phy- nice is the camera by Zavoyskiy. Properly it is a favo- rable combination of a luminescence coaiiter and Wilson chember- It coubines the advantages of thesse apparatus and avoids their ahortcomings (Fizure 5 - fourth page of the cover). Finally the bubble chamber is mcntioned (Figure 4 - fourth paCe of the cover). It has a very aimplet but promising con:-.truction. There are 5 figurce. Chasing the Invisible 29-58-6-6/19 1. His research showed that all coal-t,.aring beds are gradually decreasing in a south-west direction to the line of junction with the Ukrainian crystalline block. His research also showed that in the Upper Palsozoic era, when the Donets coal bearing beds were being formedp the Ukrainian crystalline block was an eroded plateaus The sedimentary complex of the south-western outlying parts of the Donbass is limited on Card 1/2 one side by this plateau, whereas in the north-western SOV/11-59-4-7/16 On the Problem of the Structure of the South-Western outlying Parts of the Donets Basin direction it joins the Donets depression under conditions changing from plateau to geosynclinal structure, The regula- rity of the increase of coal-bearing beds also indicates a genetic connention of all parts of the Donets Basin. Lensoveta, 1959, No. 57, pp. 50-64 TECTs The authors studied the effect of mineralizing additives such as cap2and T102 on the synthesis process and the properties of spinel refractories. Dispersion parameters (limit size of grains 60A, fractions below 1,U 25-30%) are determined making the addiSion of 3% T'02 and CaF2 sufficient to reduce the Wthesis temperature to.1,450 C. It Is established That TiO' forms Mg titanates which partially pass into solid solutions with the apinel; ai about 9500C, CaO is formed from CaF and bound with A120 into aluminates. CaF causes a less compact structure gut a better heat realatance of the produ6t LZ titanium dioxide.
