TITLE: Bipolar electrolytic polishing of pipes
SOURCE: Stal', No. 4, 1964, 338-340
TOPj..- TAGS: electrolytic polishing, bipolar method, pipe
ABSTRACT: In order to eliminate the high percentage of scrap in the production of
pipes, as a result of improper methods of electrolytic polishing, modern pipe pro-
duction plants have adapted a bipolar method for electrolytic polishing. In this
paper, the authors investigate a number of problems which arise in connection with
this method and particularly in the manner in which current is supplied. In the
bipolar method polishing process, the surface of the pipe is subjected to a cathode
treatment which might lead to a hydrogen saturation of the metal and thus decrease
the quality of the surface. In their experiments, the authors studied the hydrogena-
tion process in two solutions: a sulfur-phosphoric acid electrolyte and a saturated
sodium carbonate solution (Na,703)' Only in the second case an occasional increase
in the hydrogen content was oBserved, when the current density was increases..'As a

result of the experiments, the authors concluded that a cathode residue has little
;effect on the quality of an electrolytically polished pipe surface. An increase of
the internal diameter of the cathode cylinder exceeding even 1.5 times, does not
..effect a voltage drop in the installation. It was also noticed that a voltage drop
depends to a very insignificant degree on the diameter of the pipe which ia being
polished. Orig. art. has: 4 figures and 4 formulas.

TITLE: The Use of Cermet Hard Alloys for the Cold Heading of Fastening
Parts
PERIODICAL: Metallurg, 11,961, No. 3. pp. 33- -34

T M One of the most efficient methods of raising the efficiency of cold-
heading process is increasing the durability of the technological tool. Presently,
tools used for the cold heading of fastening parts are made of high-carbon or high-
chromium instrument steels. These tools show, however, short service life due to
the quick wearing out of the operational surface, and cracking. Some years ago a
nimber of plants started the use of dies with GK8 (VK8), RV,10 (VKIO) and 13K'15
(IIK15) cermet hard alloy inserts. The durability of tools with such inserts is
much hig)ier than that of carbon steel instruments. However, they can not be used
in cold heading of large-diameter parts due to cracking. Therefore the Nauchno-
issledovatel'skiy Institut metiznoy promyshlennosti (Scientific Research Institute
of the Metalware Industry), the Vsesoyuznyy nauchno-issledovatellskiy institut
tverdykh splavov (All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Hard.Alloys) together

The Use of Cermet Hard Alloys for the Cold Heading of Fastening Parts
with the Magnitogorsk kalibrovochnyy and metizo-metallurgicheskdy zavody (Magnito-
gorsk Calibrating and Small Iron Ware Plants) developed optimum grades of cermet
hard alloys suitable for the production of large-size inserts, and enlarged the
nomenclature of tools with hard-alloy inserts for the cold-heading of fastening
parts. The investigations were directed on the manufacture of 12 mm-diameter bolts
and nuts. The following instruments were tested: cold heading dies; roughing
dies for the manufacture of bolts and nuts; dies for operation IV in cold head-
ing of round metal nuts, The Inserts were made of VK20, VK25 and T430 cermet hard
alloys. Comparison tests were carried out with VK12 and VK15 alloys. It was
found that the durability of all the tools investigated Increased with 4higher
cobalt content in the alloy. However, maximum durability of the tools was obtain-
ed using a variety of alloys for the inserts. On the basis of the experimental in-
vestigation recommendations were developed as to the application of aermet hard
alloys for cold-heading tool inserts (Table 2). It was found that cermet hard al-
loys are highly wear resistant, show low tensile strength and can not withstand
tensile stresses arising from radial upsetting forces.

TITLE: Using sintered carbide in the manufacture of fasteners by the cold-

PERIODICAL: Referativnyy zhurnal, Mashinostroyeniye, no. 13, 1962, 14, abstract
13V53 ("Tr..Konferentsii po metizn. proiz-vu, 1959". Chelyabinsk,

TM: Many plants manufacturing fasteners produce their upsetting tools of
the BK 15 (VK15) sintered.'.carbide. However, more than 70% of the tools made of
this sintered carbide get out of commission owing to the chTpping and cracking of
the inserts. Investigations were carried out at the MagnitQgorskiy kalibro-'
vochnyy zavod (Magnitogorsk Calibration Plant) to find more durable sintered
carbide grades. A test lot of tools was made of ductile sintered carbide grades
having an increased Co-content (12 - 30%). Tools were tested operating under
maximum heavy-duty conditions: for upsetting nuts - dies.of the third and fourth
operation; for bolts - upsetting dies and roughing top dies. It was found that
the tool life increases with a higher Co-content. The average tool life of up-

setting female dies with VK15 inserts (15% Co) amounted to 100,'000 - 150,000 M12
bolts. With a Co-content of 25% the female dies did not chip off, their average
life amounted to400YOOO bolts. The investigations established the fact that the
best sintered carbide grades for cold upsetting tools are the following: for up-
setting female dies and roughing top dies for M10 bolts - VK15, for bolts from
M12 'to M16 - VK25-3, for female dies of the fourth upsetting opera@ion of 146 - MS
nuts - the VK15 sintered carbide, and for M10 - M16 nuts - VK25-3. To avoid
cracking the sintered carbide insert is pressed in a ring. It Is recommended
to make the rings of the Y 10A (UIOA) alloy whose service life exceeds that of
the 30 xrCA (30EhGSA) alloy, which is used at our plants, by a factor of 4.5
and is superior to the Poldi 425 alloy@used at a Czechoslovakian hardware plant,
which is identical to our 3X B2C (3KhV2S) alloy. The negative allowances for
pressing the inserts into the upsetting female dies and roughing top dies are
0.1 - 0.14 mm for M6 - M8 bolts and 0.15,- 0.18 mm for M12 - M16 bolts. The
inserts for MIO - M12 nuts should be pressed into the female dies of the fourth
operation with a negative allowance of 0.15 - 0.18 mm. There are 3 figures.

TITLE: The Determination of Magnesium in Zirconium Using Ion Exchange
Chromatography (Opredeleniye magniya v tsirkonii s primeneniyem
ionnoobmennoy khromatografii)
PERIODICAL: Zavodskaya Laboratoriya, 1958, Vol 24, Nr 12, PP 1434-1436 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The method is based upon the ability of zirconium to form an easily
soluble oxalate complex compound which is not adsorbed by a cation
exchanger (cationite). The magnesium in the solution is, however,
adsorbed by the cationite and can then be eluted with hydrochloric
acid. An ion exchange resin with the trade mark SBS (so 3H is the
active group) was used. The columns Used were 25 ml burette5 with a
meter of 12 mm and a height of 400 mm. Hf, Ti, Ca, Fe,and Al, and ofle-@
admixtures may be present in the metallic zirconium, since they eithe
form complex compounds which are not adsorbed (as the Zr)., or are
precipitated out at some point in the analytical procedure- Magnesium
in uvutent of 0-005 to 0-1% in zirconium can be determined colori-
metrically using titanium yellow. A photocolorimeter of the FEK-M
type with green filter (530 MA) was used in these experiments. The

PERIODICAL: V sb.: Izolzatsiya elektr. mashin, Vol. 2, Moscow, 1958, pp. 70-76
TEXT: The AF-17 thermosetting alkyd phenol varnish has been tested. The
varnish Is based on polyester copolymer on the base of phthalIc anhydride,
modified with castor oil, and butylkneaded phenol-formaldehyde resin 101 (polyester
- resin - 100 : 30). A 9:1 mixture of xylene and butanol is solvent and xylene
is diluent. Physico-chemical and dielectric characteristics of AP-17 meet the
requirements applicable to insulating Impregnating varnishes. In respect to
drying in a thick ayer and cementing properties, AF-17 is superior to "447" and
"NfrW16" (mam-M)trnlshes. AP-17 varnish has been used when developing a new
insulation for windings of the traction motor "AK-103" (DK-103) and for impreg-
nating other electric machines. The technology of drying Is described. AF-17
varnish can be reconnended for impregnating windings of electrical machines and
equipment with class A and B insulation operating under heavy duty conditions.(VEI)

ABSTRACT- The authors synthesized binders for synthetic mica insulation tapes Intended
for prolonged operation at 155C (heat resistance class F). The compositions were for- i
mulated from epoxy resins ED-6 or E-40 and polyester amide resins obtained by poly-
condensation of adipic acid, synthetic fatty acids, phthalic anhydride, glycerol and mono-
ethylaniline. Tetraethoxysilane was used as the hardening agent. The hardening process
is presented schematically and authors conclude that it represents a reaction between
tetraethoxysilane and hydroxyl groups of the epoxy resin or the polyester, sometimes in-
eluding a reaction between hydroxyl groups of the epoxy resin and alko groups of the
XY
tetraethoxysilane. The synthesized coating retained viscosity of 40 sec. over pro-

longed periods at an epoxy-polyester ratio of 100:40. Bonding capacity was best at
28.6% epoxy content. Saturation compounds and binders should contain 20-25% and 48-
52% resin, respectively. Weight loss did not exce6d 20-25% and b&ding capacity re-
mained at 25-30 kg over 30 days of heat aging. Thermal elaBticity was 15-20 hrs. at
180C and up to 600 hro. at 160C. Volume resistivity and dielectric strength values are

ABSTRACT: The mechanical and dielectric properties of triacetate and polyethylene
terephthalate films used for coating electrical insulating boards are tabulated and com-
pared. For bonding polyethylene terephthalate films to electrical insulating boards,
polymers such as polyethylene glyceroterephthalate, polyglycerophthalate modified with
castor oil (Rezyl) and acrylonitrile resin SKN-40 dissolved in acetone or in a 1:1 mixture of
alcohol and acetone, with different modifiers, were tested. Commercial lacquers such as
polyvinylformalethylal VL-7 and alkydemelarnines MGM-8 and MD-92 were also tested,
using an electric adhesiometer on 6-mm. -wide coated strips. The adhesive was applied to!

applied to it; the sample was then kept under a pressure of 15-20 kg at 90 + 5C.
The highest bonding strength was obtained with the Rezyl resin 90, modified with the ethyl
ester of o-silicic acid. A plot of the stability of the Rezyl compositions against the content,
of the ethyl ester of o-silicic acid showed that the gelatinization time of Rezyl diminishes i
considerably with increasing ester content. The viscosity of bonding compositions with 1
different solirents was plotted against storage time at 20 + 5C. Stable compositions were 1
obtained by dissolving them in a mbcture of alcohol and toluene (1 :1) or ethyl alcohol-
toluene-acetone 0:1:1). They remained stable for 5 months during which time their
viocosity remained almost unchanged. The Rezyl adhesive modified with the ethyl ester
of o-silicic acid (23-7) applied to metal showed high heat-stability and very good electrical
characteristics, whiA did not change significantly in a humid atmosphere. The char- 11
acteristics of the comijosition 23-7 and those of the bonded insulating board are Rated.

TEXT: Hot-vacuum extraction analysis of ferro-alloys is described.
Description is given of an analyzing apparatus, which can operate at up to
2,0000C and must be provided with an instrument for drawing "gas volume diaGrams"
(gazovologramy). Analysis of various ferro-alloys shows that the content of
gases in them varies in a very wide range and depends on chemical composition
of ferro-alloys, on their origin, dimensions of their grains, and on the method
of storage of same. Smaller pieces of ferro-alloys contain greater amounts of
gases: -long storage time Increases -the amount of-gas in ferro-alloys - the
faster the greater is the affinity of the alloying elements (Ca, Al and others)
to 0. A recommendation is given on how to select test samples for dotermination
of gas in them.
