TITLE: Quantitative determination of monazite and zircon in

TEXT: A spect.:ochemical method was developed for the
determination of monazita and zircon in the sands and.alluvial
deposits on the basis of determining the bond between Cc, La and
Zr, and certain minerals. Results are given of optical, X-ray and
qualitative spectral investigations of sand concentrates from the
river Otava (more than 140 samples) and also calibration graphs for
the determination of Cc, La and Zr contents. Detailed description
is given of the sample preparation for analysis, preparation of
standard solutions with the concentration range of 5-0-0005%,
conditions for 'the rec--rding and analysis of the spectra.

The samples were mixed (1:2) with a powdered carbon, into which V.
was introduced (in the form of NHhVO3) to serve as an internal
standard. The a!Lalytical lines used (in A) were: Ce 11 4222.6o;
La 11 4333-74 and 4322-50; Zr 1 4241.67; V 1 3892.86.
The method described perm-its determination of the contents of
Ce, La and Zr in the concentrates from 0.04% to 5% with average
deviations of  12, -* 16, 1 23%, respectively. The content of
monazite (in 011b) is calculated from the formula
X = (C Ce + CLa )/0.6
and that of zircon directly from the calibration graph.

TITLE: use of cinefilms instead of photographic plates
in spectrum analysis

TEXT-. Due to a shortage of spectrograph*c plates during
the first half of 1961, ordinary platp casettes were adapted
for work with cinefilms. The adaptor consisted of I wim thick,
6 x 24 cm Perspex supporting platelets, which were so placed that
the maximum surface of the unperiorated part of the film could
be fully utilized and the film was completely fl:-.t. The film
frame could be used for the same number-of spectra as the plate
which it replaced, one jo-m long filth being sufficient for .
700 spectrograms. The only disadvantage in using film is that
the available spectrum area in considerably :qarrower. However$
this was not a disadvantage for the qusntitr,~%Ive assay of indium
