ABSTRACT: The article contains an account of an inter-vuz scientific
conference on the above subject which took place at the Kiyev
Technological Institute of Food Industry (Kiyovskiy tekhnolo-
gicheskiy institut pishchavoy promyshlennosti). A total of
20 reports was delivered by instructors of the Kiyev, Moscow
and Leningrad technological institutes of food industry, the
Frunze Polytechnic Institute (Frunzenakiy politekhnicheskiy
institut), by collaborators of the All-Union Scientific
Institute of the Confectionery Industry (VNIKP), the Central
Scientific Research Institute of the Sugar Industry (TsINSIP
the Kiyev branch of the Scientific-Research Institute of
Alcohol Industry (Nauchno issledovatellskiy institut spirtovoy
promyshlennosti), the Ukrglavsakhar and the Kiyev Factory of
Control-Measuring Devices (Kiyevskiy zavod 1,.ontrollno-izmeritell

This is a clinical, elect romyograph ic and chronaximetric analysis of the dis-
turbances of fonic and static reactions in 500 patients with varying localization
of the pathological process. In bulbopontine and mid-cerebellar pathology. a
lowering of muscular tonus is observed, with a tendency to loss of supporting
and static reuctions. I'MG shows an early, sharp decrease in muscular activity.
Chronaximetrically. the indices of chronaxy, both in the horizontal anti In the
vertical position of the subject, were shown to be almost identical. In patho-
logy of the cerebellar hemispheres, postural ataxia is connected with the hyper-
metric ('over -reaching') character of the motor reactions. Adaptive chronaxy
(its shortening) on changing to a standing posture is marked; simultaneously,
changes in tl@.e EMG are also observed. In involvement of the midbrain, the
'cerebellar hemisphere' type of reaction most frequently predominates, as does
also a tendency to a lowering of muscular tone. In this connection, the fact
that this region Is the site of the junction of the cerebellar, brain stem, sub-
cortical and cortical uystems is of significance. In ext ra -pyramidal activity,
disturbances of static reaction are determined primarily by the presence of
plastic hypertonia. Clinically, there appears a loss of reflex static adaptation,
and of compensatory counter-movements of the extremities with a shift in the
centre of gravity. This is also reflected in the EMG and chronaxy Investigations.
In disturbances of the cerebral cortex disturbances of static control occur in
the area of adaptive static reactions, which fact is reflected in the myographic
findings. Th,! available data show that only a complicated interaction of various
tone-productag mechanisms preserves the muscular tone of the body and ex-
tremities. The significance of these mechanisms In the production of patho-
