TEXT: When applying ultrasonic inspection to test pieces to be
series-produced, it is necessary for the angle of US propagation
to be evaluated separately for the material of each test piece,
this angle being normally given only for steel. From its value ac-
curate information on the defects in the manufactured part may be
obtained. When cutting out the defective spots for comparison with
the results of the US inspection, the use of the magnetic fluor-
escent or color method is suggested. CRO screen photography is
widely used for recording the results of US inspection of maaa pro-

Abstract: Authors describe a colorimetric method (using
Ehrr-ic-h-rs solution and a Pulfrich photocolorimeter (filter
S 33)) to determine the amount of camphor in galenicals.
They find the method reproducible, suitable for analytical
laboratory, sufficiently accurate, and less cumbersome
than the method recommended in Farmakopeia Polska III.
7here are 16 references, of which one is Polish, two are
Russian, four German, and the others Western, mostly English.

Abstract: Authors discuss the difficulties of dotorminin,-,
glycerol in complex pharmaceutical preparations, and rePort
on their study to devise a method for glycerol determination
in various Polish glycerol pharmacopeia preparations. 'Ihey
applied varying methods of separation, but used the method
of alkalimetric method of determination of the products of its
.oxidation in all cases. They list the preparations studied,.
the methods of separation, and tabulate their findings. -They
"bound their methods repeatable and sufficiently accurate for--
use in the analytical laborator.y The.re are 24 references:
one (1) each Polish, Soviet, and Czech; 6 German, and the
other Western.

Abstract: cates the presence of double bonds. The hydro-
genation of DA I over Pt black gives diacetvldi-
hydro-I (III), mp 160-1620 (from ale), f_:- 7 16D
/ 580 (c = 1; chloroform). The quantitative
saponification of 29 mg III with 5 ml of
0.11123 N KOH in CH3 OH yields dihydro I, mp
181.5-183.50 (from ale), Z:~42 17.5D / 49.40
(c = 0.8 chloroform); a total of 6.166 mg KOH is
consumed, corresponding to 2 acetyl groups.
With Liebermann-Burchard fs-pelling uncertain7 re-
agent, I gives a yellowish-green color; with the
Chugaev-Rosenheim reagent the reaction is nega-
tive. A precipitate is not obtained with dihit-
onine. A triterpenoid structure is proposed for
I. -- A. Krayevskiy.

~~mono-2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazide (II) with concentrated H SO leads to the

formation of 2-(2,4-dinitropnenyl)-phthalazlnedi-1,4-one (III). -Probably
the transformation of II into III passes through the intermediate formation
of I, this being demonstrated by the fact that I is produced frod II at a
lower reaction temperature. In the same way 2 (4-nitrophenyl)-
phthalazinedi-1,4-one M can be produced from phthalic mono-4-nitro-
phenylhydrazide (IV). It was not found possible to convert N-0-nitro-
phenylamino)-phthalimide (VI). into V or IV into VI', 10% liaOH is added to

(from alcohol). Heating 5 9 1 with concentrated H 2 so4to 1600C gives III,
yield 0.6 g. 20 g VI are heated with an aqueous alcoholic Na 2 CO3 solution
until solution formation, this is diluted with water and IV is precipitated
with HC1 (acid), yield 19 g, m.p. 24,1-2430C (from alcohol). A mixture of
59 IV and 40 ml concentrated H 2s04 is heat.ed to 1000C, this gives V,
C14H904 N3, yield 0.8 g, m.p. 297-2980C (from CH 3COOH)j the 4-acetyl
derivative, C H 0 N p has m.p. 215-2170C (from CH COOH). [Abstracter's

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summary] A case of leptospirosis is reported
which had the clinical appearance of Weil's disease, was presumably caused by
L. Saxkoebing, was confirmed by sprological and histological tests and resulted
in the death of the patient because of renal insufficiency. The importance
of early treatment and of early diagnosis is pointed out
and some diagnostic problems are discussed briefly. Of interest in the case
is the demonstration of numerous leptospirae in the organs by means of
