Title Application of Gas-Discharge Instruments as Sources of
Light for Spectral Analysis of Inert Gases.
Orig Pub Zavod. laboratoriya, 1956, 22, No 4, 442-443
Abstract A method is proposed for determining neon and helium in
gas-discharge apparatus by using as a source of light
the apparatus itself. In this work the source of light
was a TG-lP tube (filament voltage 6-3, plate current
35 ma, pressure of gas in the tube 2 mm), in which there
occurs during the time of operation an are discharge,
which is accompanied by the glow of the gases located
in the tube. The glow of the tube is projected through
an opening in the anode (1 mm in diameter) on to the
slit of the ISP-51 spectrogxaph with a camera having
f - 270. The spectra were photographed on a "Pankhrom"

Investigation of aqueous alundum suspensions stabilized by
carboxy-methyl cellulose for electrophoretic coatifig
PERIODICALs Kolloidnyy zhurnal,.v. 24, no. 5', 1562, 558 - 564
TEXT% The effect of several phy81cochemical characteristics of sodium
carboxy-methyl cellulose (Va-CMC) on its efficiency as a stabilizer for
aqueous suspensions of alundum for electrophoretid coating was studied.
The sedimentation stability of the suspension*is~raised with increasing
degrees of polymerization, etherification, and Na-CMC concentration in the
suspension. Greater thickness of coatings'is obtained-with an increasing
degree of polymerization of Fa-CMC, while increasing etherification resulted
in thinner coatings. The homogeneity of coatings improves with a lower .
'degree.of polymerization, and a higher degree of etherification and Na-CMG
concentTation. The anodic gas evolution, which is very detrimental to the
quality of coatings, increases with etherification and Wa-CMC concentration

in the suspension, and is reduced by an increasing degree of polymerization.
The resistance of coatings to 0.05 N NaOR increases with concentration,
degree of polymerization, and etherification of Na-CMC. Electron-
microscopic measurements showed that the stabilizing effect of Na-CMC is
based on the adsorption of high-molecular ions (CMC)'-*4'to the alundum
particles, and on the formation of structurized protecting gels which pre-
vent the joining of the individual particles. The best coatings are ob-
tained by stabilizing the alundum suspensions with purified Na-CMC having
a degree of polymerization of 500-550 and a degree of etherification of
70-80 in a concentration of 0.3-0.5% of the aqueous phase.. The results
were used in developing a new industrial technique of producing electrq-
phoretic insulating coatings from aqueous alundum. suspensions on parts of
electron tubes. Thus, the use of toxic and inflammable organic solvents
and of nitrocellulose can be abandoned. There are 8 figures'and 1 table.

TITLE: Influence of Hydrogen on the Occurrence of Defects in
Large Aluminium Alloy Forgings (Vliv vod-tku na "skyt

PERIODICAL: Hutnicke" Listy, 1959, Nr 1, pp 1?-22 (Czechoslovakia)
ABSTRACT: Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the Czechoslovak
Scientific and Technological Society for Metallurgy and
Foundry Practice , Pilsen, May 15, 1958.
The authors consider as a large forging one weighing
more than 100 kg. To verify the quality of forgings,
one forging from each melt is subjected to mechanical
tests, to fractographic tests and to investigations of
the micro and macro-structures. Faults detected in
hardened and work-hardened forgings are predominantly
of a round shape of sizes up to several square centimetres;
the surface of such defects shows a metallio'brightness
and they are similar to flakes in steel. Views on the
origin of these defects vary. However, by systematic
study of the production and quality tests during the
individual operations the authors established (Ref 3)
Card 1/6 that the observed defects are internal cracks which have

not been detected during tests of the material from the
ingot prior to forging or in pressed specimens. This
means that the cracks must have occurred during further
processing. Tests revealed that the formation of cracks
can be influenced by the process of recrystallization
caused by continuous deformation during upsetting.
The results of further tests can be summarised thus:
1. The primary cause of formation of internal cracks
is the quality of the starting material; crack formation
during forging is of secondary impQrtance.
2. With increasing content of hydrogen, the danger of
defects3increases; up to a hydrogen content of
0.23 em /100 g the effect of hydrogen can be successfully
overcome by gradual upsetting.
3. The fracture surfaces of tested forgings do not allow
a conclusion on whether a decreasing hydrogen content
reduces the frequency of occurrence of a layered fracture.
4. The hydrogen content in itself is not the cause of
occurrence of cracks, not even if the ingot is pressed
Card 2/6 in the hot state by means of an extrusion press. Even

CZECH/34-59-1-4/28
Influence of Hydrogen on the Occurrence of Defects in Large
Aluminium Alloy Forgings
after heat treatment such material never proved
unfavourable from the point of view of the number of
defects.
5. The influence of hydr9gen content on the mechanical
values after various methods of forging does not
manifest itself either in the longitudinal or in the
transverse directions. Of considerable influence on
the mechanical values is the method of upsetting.
Upsetting by means of continudus'pressure results in
higher mechanical values than for step-by-step upsetting.
The mechanical properties obtained for a longitudinal
and a transverse cut depending on the method of
upsetting, is graphea in Fig 11.
6. Metallographic investigation did not reveal any
accompanying phenomena which would elucidate the
occurrence of cracks.
7. It was found that in smaller or very small forgings
from the same material similar faults either do not
occur at all or occur only in very isolated cases.

CZECH/34-59-1-4/28
Influence of Hydrogen on the Occurrence of Defects in Large
Aluminium Alloy Fargings
the authors conclude that hydrogen only facilitates
the formation of cracks but does not in itself participate
in the crack formations if no additional stresses are
generated. This is confirmed by the.fact that for
hydrogen contents of 0.14 to 0.31 am"/100 g no cracks
were detected at all in heat treated test cylinders,
taken from the ingot or from polished rods. Experimental
and.shop experience has proved that thermal stresses
during hardening are not responsible for the occurrence
of such faults. Therefore, the authors believe that
crack formation during upsetting is caused by the'combined
effect of hydrogen and stresses generated during
shaping deformation. Due to interruption in the
deformation process and pauses between individual
deformation cycles the additional-tensile stresses in
the case of step-wise (non-continuous) upsetting are low,
since during the intervals between individual operations
the material has time for stress-relaxation and for

cross section. Important factors are the stress
distribution and the chemical composition in the cross
section of the upset ingot, segregation, gas content etc.
The results of the metallographic analysis show that
cracks occur in the eutectic always along grain or
block boundaries and at the spots where the material has
a low degree of coherence and,in some cases along the
network of the silicon eutectic, It appears that the
hydrogen is concentrated around particles of the eutectic
but its locati6n does not necessarily bring about crack
formation. However, in direct ratio to its content the
hydrogen increases the tendency of the material to become
brittle. From the metallographic point of view the
same type of phenomena are observed as for floculi in
etched polished steel sections. No phenomena can be
observed around the cracks which would explain why the
cracks occur at random in one place or another. Howeverl
it appears that the effect of a further additional
tensile stress is essential for a crack to form. Data

hydrogen saturation by the used forging method and

The reticulo-er-dothelial cells of rabbits had been previously paralyeed by administration
of Hayden's 0.06 % electrocolloidal copper solution. Then corneas of the right eyes and
irises of the left eyes of rabbits were inoculated with haemolytic streptococci. In 24
hours the ocular changes in rabbits so inoculated were found to be more severe than in the
controls. Moth these two groups werethen given treatment for three days, consisting of
oral admintstration of 0.5 g./kg. of albucid and intra-venous administration of 0.30 g./kg.
of albucid. Paracentesia of the cornea was performed daily during this period. While
quick recovery could be observecl in animals with intact reticulo-endothelial systems,
changes due to infection in rabbits with paralysed reticulo-endothelial systems could
hardly be influenced by the treatment,as though the tissues of the eye had lost their
ability to fight infection. On histological examination no calls containing trypan blue
could be detected either around the corneal ulcer or around the abscess of the vitreous.
The sulphonamide damages cocci primarily, and the protective forces of the organism
cooperating with the reticulo-andothelial system then kill and eliminate them secondarily.

The effect of antigens on the fluorescein permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier
wus determined with the aid of a new apparatus, the principle of which is that in a
cuvelte a fluorescein solution of known concentration is compared with the fluores-
rein content of the aqueous fluid. For details, the original article should be con-
sulted. Using this fluorometer the concentration variations are drterm; ned at
stated intervals after an i.v. injection of a 10% solution of sodium - fluor, see in. The
values found are marked on a system of coordinates. In various disorders (episcler-
itis, sclerokeratitis, kerato-iritis iridocyclitia, uveitis, chorloiditis and chorio-
retinitis) tests were made with several kinds of antigens, obtained from dental
granulomata, tonsils, prostates and tuberculin; on the basis of the increased per-
meability of the blood-aqueous barrier, concentration - curves were drawn related
to the aetiology of the disturbance in question. Miter - Frankfurt

scleral wound. The conjunctival wound is carefully united with interrupted or con-
tinuous sutures. In 9076 of the operated cases the vision has been unchanged for
several years, in 705a without the administration of miotic drugs. Nlodified iriden-

"Results of 600 Cataract Operations with the Use of Alpha-Chymotrypsin."
Budapest, Orvosi Hetilap, Vol 104, No 18, 5 May 63, pages 821-624.
Abstract: [Author's Hungarian summary modified] The operation with the
use of a-chymotrypsin makes the intrascapular removal of the lense
possible irrespective of the developmental stage of the cataract in
the most productive age from 20-60. Enzymatic zonulolysis is contra-
indicated under 20 years of age and above 60, it should only be carried
out if special indication is present for it since, in spite of most
careful observance of Barraquer's method, complications can arise in all
parts of the eye. Of 37 references 2 are Hungarian, the rest Western.
