annealed copper and low-carbon steel cylinders; under torsional
loads Hooke's law was mainly valid. In the plastic range the
stress-strain relationship was exponential in the case of Cu and
linear in the case of Fe, indicating that the number of Frank-Read
dislocation sources in Cu increased exponentially while that in Fe
remained constant, i,e,, in no case was there a parpbolic relation-
ship. In other experiments strains much larger thmi the propor-
tional limit were obtained, and then a reverse load applied to
complete the hysteresis loop; thereafter, the forward load was
applied, The metal under the second forward load behaved otherwise
than un.Jer the first forward load; no part of the stress-strain
curve conformed to Hook's law but became parabolic, Indicating
that the test conditions disobey the Taylor rule; due to the
formation of a large number of blocked dislocations that hindv,

AB*RACT: The fundamental theory of thermal emf changes induced by plastic deforma-
tion of metal in tension has been investigaLed. Also, formulas for expressing the
relationship between the degree of metal deformation and the induced thermal emf
have been derIved, taking into account the dislocations and vacanciesformed with
plastic deformation, as well as the lattice elastic distortions and the electron
density changes associated with them. Experimental verification of the derived
formulas was done by subjecting 99.99%-pure copper to tension and measuring tile
changes in the induced thermal emf with an accuracy of 0.01 VvImm. By applying the
statistical theory of dislocations for quantitative evaluation of thermal emf
induced by plastic deformation, a good quantitative agreement between the theoretical
and experimental data was-.-.obtained. 'Ibermal emf changes are determined mainly by an

increase in the general density of both pinned and unpinned dislocations. The general
dislocation density can be quantitatively computed on the basis of the general

ABSTRACT. The author comments on the suggestions made by J.
Rajman for the introduction of a standard form of
business letter. To the suggestion by J. Rajman that the
USA "block" form of business letters should be adopted,
the author raises objections on the grounds that the
"block" form looks unesthetic, especially with short
letters and recommends for such letters doulll,,@ spacing
combined with the French or Continental form which is
distinguished by "indented" paragraphs. In the opinion
of the author, J. Rajman's suggestion that the abbrevia-

Abstract: Description of the production of plum juice. Washed and sorted fruit
are blanched in hot water and are then cooled with cold water to 40-
500. The plums are expressed in a hydraulic press at up to 200 at-
mospheres; the juice thus obtained is subjected to fermentative
clarification and after 2 hours is filtered through a frame filter
coated with diatomite. The filtered juice is pumped into a collect-
ing tank from which it passes into a plate pasteurizer and then into
a special concentration apparatus. This apparatus effects the con-
centration of the juice in a thin layer, vithin approximately 1 minute,

Abstract: at a temperature of about 450 an(L corresponding vacuum, to 68-70%
of sclid residue (by refractometer). Concentrated juice is packed
in tin containers of 3.785 liter capacity and is then cooled, after
which the tins are coated with a corrosion retarding lacquer, are
labeled and forwarded to the warehouse. Production of natural juice
differs insofar as the filtered juice goes to a stainless steel plate
pasteurizer where it is pasteurized at 770, after which it is packed,
by means of a dispensing machine, in glass jars. Pasteur'zer and
dispensing machine are provided -with control instruments.

Abstract : outbreak of histomoniasis meleagridis in August 1961 at the
pouitry farm housing about 6000 birds. Necropsies confirmed
diagnosis. Phenothiazine-nicotine (against Heterakis gallinae) in feed
and Enheptin in water brought about recovery. Other measures included
transfer of all hens (gallinae.) When slaughtered later, 30% of all
birds had cecal signs of histomoniasis. No outbreak so far in 1962.
