Electrodes of 0. 1-0.3 mm. diameter were inserted in various parts of the cerebral
cortex for chronic experiments. The EEG from the acoustic regions was less re-
gular than that from the motor regions, of smaller amplitude and, on the average,
of higher frequency tover 30/sec.). The oscillations from the visual regions were
also less regular than those from the motor regions, but a slower rhythm (3-5/sec.)
was dominant. There was considerable and independent variability in the various
local EEGs. During a defence motor reaction the amplitude of the oscillations in-
creased, particularly in the fields of the motor receptors. During sleep the rhythm
slowed down to 4-7/sec., while the amplitude increased to 200 jAv. Prolonged
single or rhythmic acoustic stimuli produced, as a rather specific response, a
slow oscillation with a latent period of 20-100 msec., an initial positive comp6nent
of 20-100 misec. and 20-50,uv., followed by a longer and somewhat stronger nega-

practicable over a substantial period of time because of the cyclical nature
of some major diseases.
One reason for the faulty evaluation of antiepidemic measures is that
it is generally made by the authors themselves.* who naturally tend to be

ABSTRACT: The standard instruments used as reference barometers in the measurement,
of atmospheric pressure by the Gidrometsluzhba SSSR (Ilydrometeorological Service of
the SSSR) are the standard GGO barometers Nos. I and 2, dating back to the late 19th
century. Vsesoyuzny*y nauchno-isaledovatellakly Institut metrologii (All-Union Scientific
Research Institute of Metrology) fabricated two new standard barometers (Nos. 3 and 4).
The new standard barometers ensure a higher accuracy In the measurement of atmospheric
pressure. This increase in accuracy to attained by an improved method for measurement
of the mercury level differences In the barometer and greater accuracy In the
measurement of barometer temperature. Both the old and now barometers are virtually
free of errors associated with the influence of capillary forces on the mercury level.

This article describes precise comparisons of standard barometers Nos. 3 and 4 with
One another and with standard barometers Nos. I and 2. The characteristics of baro-
I meters Nos. 1 and 2 are given, since the only other descriptions are in very old referen-~:
I ces (H. Wild, Meteorologicheskly sbornik, Vol. 1, 1874 and Repertorium fuer
Meteorologle, Bd. XVI, No. 4, 1892). Standard barometers Nos. 3 and 4 are completelyi
identical and of stainless steel; a description is given but no photographs or diagrams.
Particular attention lo'given to the procedure by which the mercury level is determined.
I The problem of vibration or the free surface of the mercury column is discussed; all
comparisons were made at night when urban traffic was lightest and only under stable
atmospheric conditions. During 1961-1962 a total of 32 series of comparisons was made j
between the two new barometers, usually with one of the two older barometers used as
a control. The mean difference (0. 03 mm) in the readings of the new standard barometers
and barometer No. I indicates that use of the new instruments will have virtually no
effect on the corrections for barometers used In checking pressure instruments. At
present, the mean square error of one barometer reading Is 0. 014 mm Hg. The
barometers are not yet on their permanent mountings and will have to be Investigated
