Abstract : The chemoluminescence (CL) of some hydrazides of isonicoti-
nic acid was studied. It is shown that the hydrazide of
isonicotinic acid (I) displays a comparatively strong CL
in presence of hemin; the CL of 1,2-diisonicotinylhydrazi-
ne and 1-isonocotinyl-2-nocotinylhydrazine is weaker than
that of 1.

During the 13-year period 1940-52, 23 cases of peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum
were found in a total of 1,745 necropsies performed at the Medical Universityg Szeged,
Hungary, on infants up to the age of 12 months. The over-all incidence was thus 1.32%,
or 1.86% if still-born infants are excluded. The yearly incidence, however, varied
considerably,, ranging from 0. 77 to 14.28%. Only one ulcer was found in a newborn
infant. Three separate ulcers were observed in 3 casess and two in 7. Perforation of
the ulcer was found in 5 cases, in 4 of which it had resulted in general peritonitis.
Haemorrhage had occurred in at least 10 cases and had been the cause of death in 4.
Histologically,, the ulcers showed but little granulomatous reaction, and signs of
endarteritis and vascular thrombosis were absent. A severe degree of dehydration and
wasting was found in about four-fifths of the infants. No association was established
between the occurrence of ulcers and of cerebral lesions.
As most of their cases occurred during the auto= months,, when the incidence of
infantile gastroenteritis is highestg the authors suggest that dehydration may be
either the cause of, or at least a contributory factor in, peptic ulceration in
infants.

Abstracto [Authors' summary] The authors Investigated the histamine-
like af A o! dextrant they have not carried out any direct histamine
determinations, however. Upon intravenous dextran infusion, a decrease
of blood pressure, an increase of the cutaneous temperature and in some
cases an improvement of tho e)soillomstrie values was observed. Sub.
cutaneous administration of dextran leadsto a local concentration of
the introvs.-nous congo red dye, the effect being similar to that of
Peremin. It is suggested that dextran mobilizes histamine and tha
liberated histamine or histanine-like substance is responsible for the
observed changes. The plasma of patients treated with dextrRn possesses
a haparin-like "clearing effict" and the authors propose the possibil-
lity of an endagen h;rrin mobilitation caused by dextran. . -j

:servations, the following conclusions were reached. 1) In the course of
cholesterol-feeding of rabbits, there is also mobilization of a presumably i
.heparin-like substance uhich. however, can not prolong the recalcification
time. 2) There is an increase in the clearing-type activity of the serum
,of cholesterol-fed rabbits which can definitely produce a temporary decrease
in the turbidity of lipemio serum. 3) The increase in cholesterol administm-
tion will Increase the blood heparin content measured by the thrombin-in-
activation method. The results are evaluated and the necessity of further
studies on the subject is pointed out. It is thought that the results
'represent a confirmation of an earlier hypothesis by the authors, the ex-
istence of an anti-cholesterolemic factor which develops in response to
.cholesterol administration. On the basis of the observations, this factor
develops .-as part of the general mesenchyme.reaction and must have a

Abstracts [Authors' Hungarian summary] The effect of prolonged cholesterol
T-eeding on blood clotting was studied on rabbits. It was concluded that
only the heparin content, calculated by the thrombin activation method,
showed a convincing change since its value increased 2-3 fold after
90 days of cholesterol feeding. The heparin-like material mobilized in
this manner was found to have an equivalent effect with that of 7.5 mg/kg
of exogenous heparin. Although a thrombogenic state, accompanying hyper-
lipoproteinemia, is reported in the literature, this is not confirmed by
the experimental data presented here, with the exception of the appearance
or accumulation of labile fibrinogen. It is thought that the difference
may be due to the acute and prolonged nature of the respective experiments.
It is assumed that the coagulogram of a "hemorrhagich character which
accompanies prolonged cholesterol feeding is of a compensatory nature and
arises as the defensive reaction of the organism. The possibility of the
existence of an anticholesterolamio factor (AFC) is also discussed. 8 East-

Abstracts [Authors' Hungarian summary] The effect of mucopolysaccharides of
ilu-man vascular walls on blood coagulation was studied. The following
findings were made: 1) The anticoagulant effect is the property not of a
single mucopolysaccharide fraction but, in addition to heparin and hepari-
tin, chondroitin sulfate and probably hyaluronic acid also have an anti-
coagulant effect. Indicative of this is the observation that theaddition
of toluidine blue will not normalize the thrombin time, increased in
response to polysaccharides of the vascular wall, while the increase,in
thrombin time will be inhibited in response to hyaluronidase fermentation.
2) LarRe amounts of mucopolysaccharides of the vascular wall will inhibit
the clo tting of the system consisting of recalcified blood and prothrombin
(Quick). 3) The mucopolysaccharidos of the normal vascular wall had In part
a different influence on the clotting factors studied than had the poly-
saccharides of the aorta of hypothyroid or atherosclerotic patients. The
differences in the polymerization of mucopolysaccharide fractions are

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian summaryl On the basis of earlier invpstiva-
tions, the possibility is raised that a lipoly-tic compound may appear in 'the
blood following a brief period of cholesterol feeding. To elucidate the
problem, the serum of cholesterol-treated and non-treated rabbits was ad-
ministered to healthy and cholesterol-fed rabbits. It was found that the
cholesterol level of healthy rabbits dpcreased by an average of 56.4 per cent
in response to the administration of serum (4 days, 1.5 ml, i.p.) from rabbits
treated with cholesterol over a 14 day period. When the serum treatment was
given to cholesterol-fed rabbits, the decrease was 40.6 per cent. An average
of 11.4 per cent change, in the cholesterol level, was registered when the
serum of healthy rabbits was used. On the basis of the experiments, it seems
to be confirmed that a so-called cholesterol-level-decreasing compound is
formed in the course of cholesterol feeding. Further investigations are
needed to elucidate the detailed properties of this compound. 4 Hungarian,
