A polished p-type Si specimen 2.13 mm thick with a specific resistance of p = 5 ohm-cm was irradiated with neutrons with an average energy of 2 Mev and an,lntegral flux in- tensity of 1018 neutrons/CM2. The temperature of the specimen in the reactor did not 'exceed 100C. The investigation showed that the absorption band at X = 1.8 u is apparently not linked to residual impurities whose concentration does not exceed 1015 cm-3. The concentration of centers responsible for this absorption, calculated using the Kravets integral, should be approximately 2 x 1017 cm-3. Numerous defects- I- Si vacancies caused by irradiation-play an important role in the creation of these centers. It is possible also that hydrogen or carbon, whose concentration in the Card 112 L 29919-66 ACC NRt AP6ol8O38 .specimen reaches 1019 cm-3 , plms adefinite role in the creation of centers producing the band at X = 1.8 ji. It iE;,as~~ed, however, that the band at X = 1.8 p arises as a result of the transition of an electron from the valence band to the level. of Ec-0. 40 ev. The absorption at X = 12 v is explained by the existence of Si-A-centej Si-vacancies, created by neutron irradiation, even at room temperature cannot produce stable centers because of high mobility. The Si-A-centers are created when the Si- vacancies are attached to oxygen atoms. Orig, art. has: 3 formulan and h figures. In 1953-1954 the standard system of geodetic coordinates valid for the entire Chinese territory was laid down, The system is called "Coordinate System of Poking 195411 and "System of Alti- tudes Above the 'Yellow Sea Level". By the end of 1957 half the country was provided with modern high-precision primary trian- gulation series and levellings, In the same time a considerable .part of the ooan~zy vias zovered by new State topographic sur- vevin,T -orks on scales of 1 t 50,000 and 1 : 100,000. The main .1rainistration of Geodesy and Cartography came into being at the State Council of the Chinese People's Republic. The tasks confronting this administration are enumerated. It supervises all departments of ministries wnrl offices concerned with geodetic and topographic work, Th, W4-han institute of Card 1/3 Geodesy and Cartography was likewise subordinated to the Central Geodesy and Cartography in the Chinese Peoplels SOV/6-59-3-13/16 Republic Administration of Geodesy and Cartography (GUGK), in the fall of 1958 a topographic technical section and a two-year course for geodesists and topographers were added to the above Institute. At present, all wn-1-s of a general national importance are car- ried out by thr rJUGKand the Military Topographic Center. In 1957-1958 the most important rules and signs were laid down. A brief survey of triangulation and levelling works is given. Also a high-precision gravimetric net was established. Record- ings on the surveyor's table are ever more replaced by aerial photography,, A control of topographic maps on a scale of 1 : 100,000, obtained by the stereotopographic method, showed that the errors of altitude and relief representation do not exceed allowed limits. In 1954 the semi-State owned Carto- graphic Institute unified 16 small enterprises and now entertains 300 collaborators, The Institute has hitherto publiahed 240 new maps and 17 atlantes. The general Chinese geographic atlas was pablished in 1957. Also reprints of Soviet atlantes were made, By 196! primary triangulation is to be com- pleted. The topographic map covering the entire country will be completed by 1967. The most important territories will be re- Card 2/3 corded oz-asnOeof 1 : 25,000, other densely populated regions Geodesy and Cartography in the Chinese People's 30'116-59-3-13116 Republic on 1 ~- 50;000, and deserts as well as high-mountain regions on 1 -, 100"000c After 1967 cartographing will be done on a larger scale. The experiments were performed at room temperature on 7 male rabbits under urethan- chloralob e anesthesia; 5 more rabbits were used as control animals. After immobilizing the rabbits, a canula Card i 19 N" A P70 033217 was inserted in the carotid artery, and the trachea was cut and joined to a Diegby I Zeigh valve. The animals then were made to inhale a mixture of 7 percent oxygen in nitrogen for 30 minutes, while diatomic oxygen consumption, elimination of carbon dioxide, the expiratory quotient, and the ventilation equivalent were determined. and C02 contents in the exhaled air were measured with a 02 Haldane apparatus. Valves of 0 and C02 in mm3'/cm of body surface were calculated by the Kletber methoW. Oxygen saturation of the blood was determined with a Soviet 057 oximeter. Breathing an air containing 7 percent of oxygen. caused very profound disturbances in the gas exchange. Oxygen consumption dropped to approximately one third, the respiratory quotient rose about three times, oxygenation of arterial blood decreased to- about one half, and ventilation became less effective, dropping to a fraction of its normal value. Low molecular pressure during inhalation made penetration of a sufficient quantity of oxygen into the capillary blood of the lungs more difficult. The drop in oxygen consumption was not accompanied by any significant changes in carbon dioxide elimination. Consumption of oxygen during oxygen debt restoration -reached a level somewhat higher than that of the control animals. Sixty minutes after cessation of inhalation of the mixture the drop in oxygen consumption averaged 28 percent. These I experiments can be used as a model of deep anoxic hypoxia.
