Abstract Study the absorptive power of zirconium and titanium, with admixture
of thorium, in relation to hydrogen and oxygen in the range from
room temperature to 7000 C. Conclude that zirconium and titanium
gas-absorbers very effectively absorb hydrogen and oxygen under
definite temperature conditions, thus permitting their use in electron
tubes as getters to improve or maintain the vacuum. Find the tem-
perature dependence of the absorptive capacity. Thank Academician

ABSTRACT: The aureole-observing outup permita scattering to be measured directly in
the field. It allows determination of the form of the aurbole part of the scatter,-
ing indicatrix for the near-surface layer of atmosphere under different meteorlogi-
cal conditions in various p;irts of the spectrum, with an angular resolution of about
12'. It is part of equipment built under the direction of Professor G. V.
Rozenberg at the Zvenigorodskiy nauchnoy baze IFA _A11T SSSR (Zvenigorod Scientific
Station of the IFA All SSSR) for simultaneous investigation of the optical properties
of the near-surface air and of aerosols. The setup consists basically of three
parts: an illinnin tor, a scattering chamber, and a photometer. Each is described in
detail. An SVDSh-1OOOB xenon lamp is used as the light source. For detection, a
modified UFPL telephotometer is employed. The size of particle detectable by the

.instrument ranges from 2 microns as a minimum to 100 microns as a mg imum for a
'wavelength of 0.6 microns, and from 3 to 150 microns for a wavelength of 0.9
microns. Measurements show that for any atmospheric state the indicatri-x proves to
.be elongated; i.e., there is a more or less well-d'efined aureole. This aureole part
of the scattering indicatrix undergoes considerable change with change in atmos-
.pheric conditions. The particles enlarge in size during formation of clouds, the
maxima on the scattering curve, corresponding to effective sizes of particles, shift
toward smaller scattering angles, or toward larger particles. The first part of the
indicatrix (the first imum) is compressed, and this also indicates a growth in
effective size of particle. But as cloudiness becomes denser, repeated scattering i
begins to have an effect: the maxima become diffuse and the rest of curve smooths
out. With decrease in wavelength, the elongation of the aureole part of the
indicatrix increases, the maxiTmi being shifted toward smaller angles (larger
:particles). In addition, a turbulent fluctuation was observed in the direction of

ABSTRACT: The basic results of the measurements of the scattering function (10' to
100) conducted at the Zvenigorod Science Base (1962-1964) and theaureoleclassificatio
for various meteorological 'conditions are presented. The study of 'the aureole phenomenon
was based on the evaluation of the angular dependence of the brightness of light scat-
tered by the atmosphere I(0 and the angular dependence of light power scattered in
all azimuths inside an Interval of the angles of scattering d8, where 0 is the angle
of scattering. The apparatus and electrical equipment described by Lyubovtseva and
Dianov-Klokov, et al., and an automatic recorder (EPP-09-M) were used for measure-
ments of three wave lengths: Al = 0.47, A2 = 0.585, and A3 = 0.888 (microns). The

coefficient of directional light scattering DO) was evaluated by using the formula

where C is the constant depending on the apparatus construction, V(8) is the effective
scattering volume, and 0 is the power of a light beam. The data show that there are
three characteristic types of angular dependences (I(B)) corresponding to three dif-
ferent visual-optical conditions: haze, foggy hate, and fog. The data also show
that 1) the brightness fluctuations are insignificant for mist and steady foggy mist
and are of considerable magnitude during the transition from foggy mist to fog; 2) a
mist is usually formed during atmospheric pollution; 3) the foggy mists are usually
observed under the conditions of the ordinary atmospheric pollution; 4) the fogs are
observed, as a rule, at high relative humidities and corresponding meteorological
visibility S < I km; 5) the transition from a mist to a fog is connected with the
formation of large drops; the increase in the concentration of large drops leads to
the disintegration of the fog; the brightness of scattered light increases with an in-
crease in the fog condensation. The authors thank G. K. Yeroshkin who performed a
considerable part of the time-consuming measurements and V. I. Dianov-Klokov for as-

Abstract: It is recommended, in order to rejuvenate the meadow
stock of grasses, to effect the sealing of organs
with vegetative embryos of economically valuable
plants at a depth of 2-4 on and to avoid an exces-
sive division of the bush into small parts. When
cutting the meadow, the vegetation cover of which
is presented by hair grnss or by sedge, it is neces-
sary to seal in the vegetative embryos of these

ABSTRACT: The article deals with the results of airborne electromagnetic prospecting
by the "long-wire" method in one the regions of the west "green-stone" belt of
Mugodzhar. The main part of the territory under study is covered with Neogen-
Quaternary sediments and a well-developed mesozoic weathering zone of high conduc-
tivity. The results of observations were given in the form of effective resistivity
curves. Airborne electromagnetic data and geophysical investigations were used for
geological mapping. As a result, a more correct schematic geological map at a
1:50,000 scale has been compiled. Outcrops of upper devonian sediments, intrusions
