As a restukt of construction of dams on the Berezina and
Zel'vy~ Rivers in Be!orussia various forests and fo-
rest areas adjoining the reservoirs were flooded. Test
areas were set up in the flooded zone. It vas determined
that pines ir, the III age class grew more slowly when the
ground water level was raised above four meters: ~i~yV~
birches in the same stage of development proved more re-
sistant to fiood[ng. Alders of the II and III age classe~
improved their diameter gro-~h ,~hen the ground '~ater level
was raised to 0.15-0.80 meters~ but when it increased to

within 0.1 meters of the surface or reached the surface
(after flooding)~ alder also gr~w more slowly. The spruce
of the II and III age classes growing on the higher parts
of the area, showed an insigiliflcant de,line in diameter
growth when flooded. ]in low areas growth increment decli-
ned sharply. In the first and second years after flooding
young oaks showed more rapid vertical growth, but those si-
tuated right at water level gave poorer growth increment.
No variations in the course of growth were noticeable in
trees situated in places where the water level %,~s lower
than 0.7 meter.
