the growth of C}ilorella. ~rhe~se were as follows: penicillin, 5UU
Y/ml. ; laevomyac3tin, 35 ',~/ml,. ; colimycin, 5 ~i~~ml . ; a;nd tetra-
cyclin, 2y ~/ml.. No adverse) effect on the photosynthesis of the
algae was caused by these cc~ncentratians. ThQ possibility of adap-
tation of Chlor~slla to relatively high concentrations of antibio-
t~.ca in the growth modium ways explored. Some evl, danca ol` r~dfapt~~-
tion, ap meaaurp~d by a more grrzdutil reduction in growth tl~an that
occurring in coaltrol culturels subjected to an identical antibiotic
treatment, was noted. ti detailed study was made of the effect of
laevomycetin (at a concentration of 25 Y/ml.) on mixers algal-bacter-
ial. cultures. I~t was observed that the rates of reproduction of B.
cereus and Pa. t>valis were greatly reduced, while the growth of A.
harthlebii was ~~ompletely inhibited. No adverse effects on Chlorella
were noted and the activity of the antibiotic remained constant
during several days of observation. There are 3 figures and 4 te.bles.

TEXT: The effect of various concentrations of
several antibiotics an the growth of Chlorella vulgaris strain
87 and calanies of Pseudomonas ovalis, Aohromabacter harthlebii
and ~3a.cillus cereus, cultured in modified Craig-Trellis medium
in 250 ml flasks, was studied; the cultures were continuously
stirxed anal an air-C0~ ~~ixture was bubb~,ed through. Tt was ob
served that the antibiotic concert rations capable of inhibiting
the growth of Chlorella were considerably less when the cultures
were aubjeoted to continuous stirring, With the exception of nis-
tatin, all the antibiotics ~teated were found to be capable of in:
hibiting bacterial graw~th at concentrations which did not retard

Pseudomonads prevai]. The number of sporeforming bacteria. is usually small but they tend to increase
under conditions unfavorable for the growth of algae. Oligonitrophils are frequently present and the pre-
sence of cellulose decomposing bacteria was also noted. Fungi arc infrequently encountered, berng mainly
represented by organisms belonging to the genus Trichoderirra. Nitrifying bacteria and Azotohactc~r were not
detected. Bacteria found in reservoirs inoculated with Chlorella are more numerous than those present to
reservoirs inoculatedwith Ankistrvdesm~ls.
