TEXT: The authors consider the following problems: 1. Analysis or
determination of the reliability from the available information
on reliability of separate elements constituting a system or a
sub-system. 2. The synthesis or design of a system for a required
reliability and other performance criteria (e.g. economy). 3. Sta_ 119
tistical dutermination of the reliability of the most commoTi com-
ponents (valves, resistors, capaci-rors) from given experimental
data. By reviewing the existing literature the authors conclude
that the most promising method of improving the reliability of
automatic computers is the use of logic and electric control with-
in the computer. With new computer elements and new physical media

optical scanning (full-darallel, partially parallel and point-by-
poLnt with feedback), sourcel: of error and me-@hods of corre-ction
are discussed. Conclusion: the theoretical development of automa- 1A
tic programming is far ahead of the corresponding engineering con-
clusions and that, all known methods of automation require a consi-
derable (50 to 100 times) increase of the capacity of operational

ABSTRACT: The article examines in general terms the close interrelationship between
the memory organization and access time and the efficiency of a digital computer. The
efficiency with which the computer time is utilized is shown to be a function of the
memory access time. A computer instruction which is executed either by Macro- or
microprogramed control in turn causes a different number of operations to be per-
formed each requiring a certain number of memory accesses. The overall computer
efficiency Is shown to he Influenced by such factors an the speed of the memor7
medium, parallel or serial organization of the memory and the arithmetic unit, re-
circulating or random access. and the mods in which the intermediate information is
transferred between the main and the file memories. The effect of utilization of

buffer memories between the memory and the arithmetic units is analyzed. The variable
word length and content-addressable memories and their Influence an the computer

ABSTRACT: During vacuum, sublimatien of anodic sludge of copper smelters for Se
and Te extraction, sublimates also contain sulfur. In addition, copper, silver
and lead selenide6, tellurides and sulfides are mechanically entrained. The sub-
sequent difficulties of separation prompted this study. Sodium amalgam is proposed
for separation. It was found that tellurium readily goes over into the solution
as sod4um telluride, while the respectiw_- metals form an amalgam. It has been
found that, the interaction of a mixture containing elementax-I Se, Te and 9, as
well as c6pper,, lead and eilver selealdea, tellurides and sulfides, Se, Te and
partially S Go into the solution as Kw,@Se, NaeTe and NXS* They can be separated

Abstract : In patients with ulcers of the stomach and duodenum (72)
under treatiaent with prolonged (13-15 hours per dpy) drug-
induced sleep (sodium amytal, chloralhydrate, sodium
bromide), pain aiA dyspeptic manifestations disappeared
within the first day. By the end of the course (30-35
days) the Lnjority of patients showed either a diminution
or disappearance of the ulcer niche, and normalization of
the excretory, pepsin-forming, and evacuational functions
of the stomach, as well as a reduction in hypersecretion.

Abst To substantiate the symptoms observed in silicoGis, an
attempt was made to determine procedures for a roentgeno-
logical analysis of functionai changes in the bronchial
tubes. The bronchokymographic investigations that were
carried out made it possible to note the absence of peris-
taltic waves and to ascertain that in silicosis the dis-
ruption of draining functions of the bronchi is followed
by accumulation of secretion in their lumen, and that oc-
curence of changes in the mucous membrane induces the

for stressing (fig. 1) utilises a suipended weight on the long arm
of the lev--r. Reinforcement for the above slabs consisted of six-
teen 4 mm wires or twelve 5 mm wires (madq of steel MM'TY-4987-55)
with an ultimate strength of 15.000 kg/cmi-. The required weight
for prestressing four 4 mm diameter wires is 5 tons which corresponds
to 65% of the ultimate strongth. The conica.1 wedges have 2
synmeti:@aa.l grooves along the wedges. The latter are made of steel
St. 20 (t-00--t 1050 - 52). The weight necessary for stressing
30@ wir" is approx. 20 tons. Upon the completion of stressing the
furm is lifted by a crane (5 ton capacity) and deposited on a
vibrating table. Here it is filled with concrete mix type 250.
The time of vibration is 5 - 7 minutes. Steam curiAig is carried
out for 16 hours, the maximum temperature being 800 C for 8 hours.

production of units usiLg power calibration and prestressing of steel
T-0 CT 5781 - 53 (fig. 4). A 20% saving in steel was achieved. 3 fig-
ures and one photograph are given.

TT=T: Considering the low efficiency and labor consuming oper-Iti-)-3 ill
welding plastic sheets with the use of rods, a machine was designed at V1,1TIST,
for welding rigid thermoplastic sheets @,,ithout rods. Thin sheets are overlap-
welded without preparation; the edges of sheets over 2 mm thick are beveled at
an angle of 055 - '100. Hot air is supplied to the gap between the sheets at the
overlap spot; as the surface of the sections to be welded softens to viscous
state, the sheets are comoressed and connected. The machine is intended-to pro-
duce straight seams on 1.5 - 2.G aim thick sheets. The welding speed depends
upon the heat conditions, the sheet thickness, the overlap and the pres3ure, and
may vary between 9.5 to 63.0 m/h. The weld joints show satisfactory strength.
Their tightness corresponds to that of the base material. There is 1 figure.

Lagrange coordinates) for the general case of gas parameters which vary

derived equation differs from the Kibel' and Frankel equation by the last
term, because of which the author concludes that the Kibel' and Frankel
formulae are inaccurate. In the particular case of the gas parajqeter-s
constant at the initial moment of the process along the length of' ute tran@n-
piston space, the authorts equation agrees with the Kibell and
equation as well as with the Lamb formula.

Transition Processes in Complicated Electric Circuits" ,

Nr 10. It is shown that this method is of no pmotical
value. This is proved on the basis of an example.

2.) Following a suggestion made by the author &n electro-
mechanical time indicator was built, which makes it
possible to record indications of time within de-
finite periods on the oscillogrpm without using one
of the vibrators of the oscillogmph. The device is de.-
