as applied to problems of x-ray therapy, were investigated. The

crystals used were grown either,(a) by sublimation of luminor CdS
iby the Grillaud mi@thod@(Group I) o@,(b) by sublimation of luminor
CdS in a nitrogen@jet -(Group II). trystals Of the first grou were

lactivated with indlium. br gallium, And those of the second group with
:Cl or with AgCl, with a small amount of Zn introduced. The investi-
1gations were carried oiit with x-ray equipment RU14-7 ("soft"radiation,@
itube voltage 20--60 kV maximum) and` RUM-3 ("hard" radiation, 100--
;i200 kV maximum). The radiation dose power in air was measured with
!an ionization dosimeter. The sensitivity of crystals of Group I
:was 7-264 pA/r/min, while-those of group II occupied an intermediate'
position. A strictly linear roentgen-ampere characteristic was
,;possessed by the leastisensitive crystals. The "variation with
'hardness" was measured for the investigated crystals and the cor"
.responding theoretical curve calculated. The results of the mea-
Isurements and of the calculations ate in satisfactory agreement in
.the region of sttohg absorption. In the region of weak absorption,
!the experimental "variation with hardness" is lower than the calcU7

lated value, owing to the inhomogeneity of the employed radiation.
.It is concluded that in the limited energy range used in x-ray
@therapy (at a generation voltage of 150--200 kV maxiim1m), the inves-
itigated single crystals, particularly those of the first group, can

retical and methodological basis of testing the breathing mechanism.
The tests are useful for the quantitative measurement of dyspnea and
for the differentiation of the causative factors, Restrictive breathing
disturbances are characterized by an increase in the elastic resistance
and decrease of compliance-value. Obstructive disturbances are charac-
terized, in addition to the prewLously mentioned signs, by an elevation
of the viscous resistance. The tec1,_-,.Lque of testin.,r is a reliable pro-
cedure under suitable conditions and Its application, along with other
techniques for the measurement of respiratory function, is definitely

Abstract: [Authors' Hungarian sum:naryj Results of respiration mechanical
and spircmetric testing on 110-cases are repor-ted. Of the patients tested,
?5 suffered from si-licosis in its various radiological stages. *dhere the
silicosis was complicated by bronchitis, the compliance values showed a
definite decrease. A definite compliance decrease was also found in about
half of the silicosis cases, where the disease was more severe than the P3
radiological stage, but clinical bronchitis was absent. The possible causes,
the indications for the test and the evaluation of the results are also

old puppies and was followed by arthroplasty -3 weeks later. Serum hexos-
amine determinations were made previous to the two operations as well as on
the 7th, 33rd and 70th da@safter the second operation. It was found that a
considerable increase in hexosamine concentration develops following the
thymectomy which increases further by the 7th day after the art@roplasty
to return to normal within a month. Animals belonging to the control group
reacted essentially in a similar manner, although tg a lesser derree, foilow-
ing arthroplasby . It is assumed that the changes in the hexosamine level are
of identical character in both cases: aspecific and a result of the surgical
