To this end, use was made of a method i of determining the structure of benzene derivatives, in the case of which it is own that the frequencies of cophasal extraplanar deformation vibrations of the C-H b nds @in the aromatic ring depend on the number and relative position of the substituents land only very little on their nature. An examination of the bands in the 95o-650 cm-1 @1 I range leads to the conclusion that the extraplanar vibrations of the C-H bonds of tho i ;aromatic rings of bipyridyls retain their characteristics, so that the data obtained 1;permit one to correlate the frequencies of the extraplanar vibrations of bipyridyls 'and their derivatives with the spectra of the corresponding pyridine and benzene Card-1/2 UDC: 547.828+51+3.422 ACC Nk.-AP6633M' derivatives. Melkonian's experimentally obtained data in the field of energy. Similar calculations have been carried out in the Cracow Center for the molecule C21.14, and the results compared with measurements made by Melkonian;' as a result, an iden- tical agreement has been established between experiments and theory (Ref. 3: J.A. In addition measurements have been made in the EWA- reactor with gas molecules of NH3 (Fig. 2); in these an aluminum crystal was employed as neutron monochromator. Results obtained in this way conform fully vath the Krieger-Nelkin theory (Ref. 4; J.A. Janik, J. Janik, and A. Wanic; Physica 26, 449, 1960). D238/D304 The results obtained by Melkonian on neutron scattering by water in a liquid state were compared with the Krieger-Nelkin theory for gaseous H20- Measurements of neutron scattering in NH3 and H2S were also carried out with the use of c_rystal monochromators (Ref. 5: A. Wanic: Acta Phys. Polon. 18, 25-5t 1959). The results obtained show a systematic increase of the active croBB section as one pas- ?es from gases to liquids. These experimental facts can also be interpreted as answeringthe question, to what extent free molecu- lar rotation is impossible in the fluid state. In the case of li- quid water and ammonia, this determination is in agreement with the well known fact that the association in these liquids through hydro- gen bonding ie strengthened. In liquid hydrogen sulphide, for which there are inadequate physico-chemical data on hydrogen bonding evi- dence, the impossibility of free rotation is caused perhaps'by a strong molecular packing. At the Cracow Center for Nuclear Physics, measurements have been made of the influence of molecular polariza- tion, in which an easily polarizable liquid (in a crystal-fluid Card 4/8 On the scattering of ... The results of initial measurements have already been published (Ref. 6: Op.cit.) and further measure- .ments are in progress. The main results are presented in Fig. 4. Experimental points and the curves drawn through them represent tbe percentage alteration in test transmission due to polarization of its molecules.by a magnetic field, in relation to the decrease of polarization. This change is, as can be seen, a function*of the energy of neutrons and indeed causes the neutron polarization of the sample; in the case of low energies a lowering and in the case of high energies a rise of neutron transmission occurs. This rela- Card 6/8 20568 P/04 60/005/007/007/007 On the scattering of ... D238%304 - tionship can be explained to a semiquantitative degree on the basis of the Krieger-Nelkin theory; it is necessary to assume here that the CH3 groups at the end of the p-azoxyanisol molecule carry out a restricted rotational movement about the co-axis, while on the other hand the whole molecule carries out free rotation about the longitudinal axis. Where molecules have an oscillatory level in the energy region, one should expect a local maximum of the relation- ship between active cross sections and neutron scattering of the energy of these neutrons. This maximum shouldappear for the parti- cular neutron energy which is necessary to create this oscillation level. Measurements have been made for liquid CH35H and, in fact, a local maximum of active cross section has been obtained where the level of oscillation of the internal restricted rotation was located. Measurements for gaseous CH33H are in progress; it can be already stated that in gaseous methy1mercaptan there are two further local maxima in the vicinity of restricted rotation which could be shown as proof of the existence of levels of restricted rotation. Total neutron cross section measurements were made in two different vessels (0.71 and 0.60 cm, thick) at room temperature by using a slow chopper and a time of flight technique applying a simple trans- mission method (T. Niewadowski, A. Szkatula and J. Sciesinski. "Nukleonika," 7 (1962) 231). Findings are compared to data of other researchers by way of curves. Authors' findings show that their experimental points are in best agree- ment with Boffile curve (V.C. Boffi,, V.G. Molinari and D,E. Parks, International Card 1/2 ACCESSION NR: AP4005911 Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1963) in the 50 meV energy range, and with the Krieger and Nelkin curve (T.J. Krieger, M.S. Nelkin. Phys. Rev., 106, (1957), 290) in the 5 meV range. Angular distribution of neutron scattering was also measured for an incident energy of 70t 3 meV. The monoenergetic neutron beam was obtained by Bragg reflection from a zinc monocrystal. The measurements of the relative angular distribution was made at 400K for gaseous benzene in a cylindrical vessel and at room temperature in a flat-sided vessel for liquid benzene. Results were compared with findingslof other researchers. Deviation between experimental and theoretical values for small angles is probably due to coherent scattering of carbon. Deviations between experimental and theoretical values for large angles is probably due to inelastic vibrational transitions.6 "Authors wish to thank Prof. H. Niewodniczanski for his kind interest, Prof. J. Janik for many valuable discussions, and Mr. H. Rzany for aid in carrying out the measurements." Owing to the multiplication of the Input values of the current and voltage of the circuit studied, a voltage signal proportional to the active power is obtained at the output. A halotron converter with frequencies in the range of 20-20,000 cps, constructed &t the Automation Institute, PAN (Instytut Automatyki PAN), is described. The magnetic circuit of the converter is made of ferrite material of type Ferroxyd 1001, which insures low losses and an adequate linearity over the entire band of converted frequencies. Linearization of the magnetization characteristic is further linearized by the presence of the air gap in which the halotron is located. The shape of the magnetic oiicuit insures a low di. spe rsion and very effective screening, A CH-3 germanium halatron of high sensitivity and resistivity is employed. Compen- sating circuits are used in order to decrease errors due to themoelectrio voltages 'ard 1/2 UDCs 621-317.38-029-5:D8.632 AdC NR. Ap6034964 and rectification phenomena. A d-c amplifier is used in the output stage, while a power amplifier (which@ also functions as a balancing network) is located in the input circuit. The Hall effect transducer employed in the analyzer has a ferrite magnetic circuit (Ferroyd- 1001 material); a CH-3 germanium Hall effect device is located in the gap of the electromagnet. The transducer magnet circuit is controlled from a local RC generator across a push-?u-'.l power amplifier; an amplifier of this type prevents the development- or a steady-state condition in the magnet core, while at the same time it has re- latively low nonlinear distortion. The input circuit features a power amplifier with balanced output matched to the low input impedance of the Hall effect device. The -Cord 1/2 UDC: 621.317.35:538.632 4 > 7 @' q7 Fig. 1. For increased sensitivity, a which cuts off i d-c test amplifier is also used. After crossing a low-Pass filter, I I crequencies above 5Hz, and after conversion, the output voltage of the Hall effect device is amplified in five stages, then, after phase-sensitive detection and smooth- ;ng, fed to a zero-center meter. If the frequency differences are great, the needle und its cen- remains motionless at zero; if the difference is small, it oscillates aro -in 0.5Hz off ter position. The reading is made when the needle is fluctuating with zero (dynamic reading). Simultaneously, the frequency of the given harmonic of the sigual is read from the generator scale, with its amplitude indicated by the meter. Orig. art. has: 2 figures.
