Abstract: In March 1965 there were 24 cases of Q-4-'ver among
members of ihe.N detachment, which was in field t alning In the
J@vlcinlty of Stira Zagora. Eight of the cases were severe and
20 were accompanied by pneumonia. An investigation showed that
the focus of infection was a sheep breeding farm at which 64
members of the detachment slept. Twenty of those who slept at
the farm caught the disease. A number of sheep at the farm were
affeoted by mastitis, and bortions or were sterile. A serolo-
gical investigation Indicated that 62.5% of these sheep had
antibodies against R. burnetti In their blood. Fourteen of the
persons Infected had a raised temperature for periods up to 45

By means of a saturated NaCl solution and acetic acid it proved possible to isolate
from various organs of the animal organism 2 nucleoprotein fractions. One of
them contained nucleoproteins in which nucleic acid was combined with protein by
.strong' covalent bond (through the N112-group of adenine) and the other by a labile
bond (through the P residue). It was shown that it is DNA that mostly forms the co-
valent bond. while the labile one is formed by RNA. The greatest content of nucleo-
proteins with a covalent bond was found In the spleen and small intestine. and a
lower one in the liver and kidneys. In the study of nucleic acid metabolism, account
should be taken of the capacity of these acids to form complexes with proteins.

The Second All-Union Conference on Bionics, organized by
Ahe Academy of Sciences USSR, the Scientific Council on 'he Complex
I.Problem of Cybernetics, the Ministiy of Higher and Secondary
Special Education USSR, the Ministry of the Radio Industry USSR,
Ithe Academy of Medical Sciences, and the All-Union Scientific-
Technical Society imeni A.. S. Popov, was held 20-24 December,
1965. Two plenary sessions and fifteen sectional meetings were
held. The following areas were discussed: 1) receptors, analyzers,
and the identification of objects; 2) neuron organization and bionic
1reliability systems; 3) bionic aspects of guidance and control and
problems of the man-automaton; 4) animal oridntation and navigation;

and 5) biomechanics and bioenergetics.
The reports presented at the plenary sessions were as follows:
The present state and trends in the development of bionics" (A. L
Berg, Academician, and B. S. Sotskov, Corresponding Member of
,.the Academy of Sciences); "The means for animal irradiation and its
@:simulation" (N. P. Naumov, G. N. Siyemkin, V. D. III yichev, and
V. D. Protasov); "The problem of modeling a universal sensor"
(Ya. A. Vinikov); "Modern concepts about man' s memory and bionic
means for constructing memory devices for cybernetic machines"
(L. P. Krayzmei-); end "Modern problems of biological aerohydro-
dynamics" (S. Ye. Kleynenberg, N. V. Kokshayskiy).
Approximately one hundred reports were read and discussed in
the sectional meetings., A. K. Podshibyakin' s report was.entitled.-
"Forecasting the operational reliability of a "man-machine' system
:and the heliogeomagnetic factors." Relying on a great quantity of experi-
:mental material, he showed that a dependence exists between the
biopotentials oi man and animals and the magnetic fields of the
atmosphere.

to those of control during emci-j!cncy situations in energy systems.
Mora 'han 20 rcportn diricussed the r(,SUItS of investigations of
b4iological automatic control. Ye. V. Alcystralkh, V. K. Zakharov,
G. N. Il'@yutkin, and Yu. I. LamyrI considered tile "Restoration
and maintenance of homeostasis at terminal states under conditions
of interaction betwccn an automaton and an orfranism." This report
includes a description of a-n. automatic installation for maintaining
.homeostatic processes in an animal organism which has been dis-
tui-bed by extreme irritations. Data frorn physiological experiments
were given and the interaction between an automaton and a living
t@
organism on the level of the regulation of vegetative functions was
discussed. A report by 6, A. Sergeyev and A. F. Romanenko dis-
cussed statistical features of a "m an -automaton" information system
under the effect of nonstationary input signals.
Card 3/5
The report of L. Ya. Fu-kshanskiy and G. I. Yuzefovich,
"Mathematical models of a mechanism by which biological objects
tell time" summarizes "extremely interesting" experimental facts
characterizing the- "biological clocks" of plants and insects.
B. P. Manteyfel' and V. Ya. Yakobi made a detailed survey
of Soviet and non-Soviet investigations of navigation orientation in
animals and birds. V. R. Protasov and Yu. D. Podlipalin reported
on the effects of low-frequency gravitational fields on the orientation
of some fish. A. R. Sakayan presented data on navigation in homing
pigeons. M. Ye. Shuirnakov's report dealt with experiments on
magnetic orientation in birds.
A series of reports was devoted to the problem of the simulation
of neurons.- Ye. V. Baybakov in his report "Simulation of the trans-
formation-of signals in receptors of living org anisms" describes a

method for the amplificai:ion of microsignals in the membrane of
:receptors of sense organs and also describes an electronic model
Ulustrating the bioamplifier converter.
L. A. Chistovich, V. I. Galunov, and V. V. Lyublenskaya
discussed the motor theory of the Derception of acoustic signals.
Problems of the reliability of measuring instruments were dis-
:'cussed in the section "Neuron organization and bionic reliability
systems." The "most interesting" were associated directly or in-
directly with the description of bionic principles and data dealing
with the reliability of the brain.
'Me cofiference delegates saw a series of scientific films, one.
of which dealt with the activities of bees.
Academician A. I. Berg summarized the work of the Conference
and discussed the course of the further development of bionics.

removal of 0 vith a current of H the polarography is
carried out. The BrO content is determined by means
of a calibration graph which is plotted on the basis of
results of polarographic determinations conducted with
solutions of known content of KBrO , under the same con-
ditions. 10-200 Br can be thus determined with an
error of about 2%. Interfering I ions are removed before-
hand by extraction with chloroform after oxidation, in he
cold, with H 0 , to 1 (5 mi of solution being analyzed

solution is made alkaline with 1-5 ml 2 N NaOff and the
further procedure is as described above. When Br- is
determined in mineral water, 50-200 ml water are first
evaporated to dryness and Br- is extracted with alcohol
(80 ml 96% C H OH 20 ml water).

TITLE: Temperature Stresses in Thin-Walled Structures
PERIODICAL: Tr. Kazansk. aviats. in-ta, 1958, Vol 43, pp 43 - 53
ABSTRACT: A method is shown for the calculation of temperature stresses in thin-
walled cylindrical beams (simulating wings oe the empennage of aircraft)
of constant cross-section, consisting of a thin covering reinforced by
lengthwise adjusted rigid elements (stringers, beam flanges) and cross-
wise by ribs, transverse girders or diaphragms. An example of determining
the axial forces and the shear forces for round cylinders and prismatic
beams, which are made of aluminum alloy of D16T grade and one end of which
is fixed while the other is free, is investigated. The temperature of the
individual stringers of the cylinder and the beam varies from 0 to 1200C.

TEXT: Consider a thin-walled cylindrical beam of inhomogeneous
material of constant cross-section, consisting of a thin shell and
a longitudinal and transverse frame. It is assumed that the
transverse sections retain their shape in deforming, that the
axial forces are taken by the longitudinal ribs and the planes of
the shell attached to them, and that the shears are taken by the
shell. It is assumed that the temperature field is given. The
temperature is constant through the thickness of the structure and
changes along the contour of a section. The general solution of,
the problem of determining the temperature stresses in a structure
of the above type with an arbitrary temperature distribution has
been found in Ref.1 in the form of a set of differential equations
for the buckling. In the integration of this set there arise
insurmountable difficulties when the number of longitudinal ribs is

not small, and hence an approximate method must be derived. In
the present case the choice of temperature field effects a
simplification in the equations and a method of integration in
normal coordinates, proposed by Odinokov,is used, This seeks the
solution for the unknown displacements fi as the sum of a series
of terms of the form (Yj ) V11\

(P (z) for thq J1. The general solution of the differential
equation for 4011(z) is given and the constants of integration
evaluated from the boundary conditions, Thus the displacements
are known and the forces and stresses on any rib can be determined.
Simple expressions are thus obtained for the forces or stresses in

longitudinal ribs far from a free boundary. -To take into account
the effect of a free edge, we apply a force P. = J(Z)Poi where
Pol is the force already determined, and determine the function
I (z) from the condition of minimum potential e.,,ergy.
A generalization is considered where the temperature varies from
section to section, in addition to varying round the contour of
the section. Two problems illustrate the theory. The first is
that of a circular cylinder one end of which is fixed and the VX
other end is free. The cylinder is made of one material. The
temperature is given at 13 points round a section with
tl = t2 = ... = t8 = 0, and the remaining values non-zero. The
second example is that of a rectangular box with one fixed and one
free end. The temperature is given at 13 points round a section
with t4 = t5 - ... = t12 = 0, and the remaining values non-zero,
In the first example comparison with exact answers shows the
approximate method to give fair accuracy and, in the second case,
the approximate method gives acceptable results. There are
