Abstract Laboratory experiments and pilot plant work have shown that
natural rubber which has been subjected to steam treatment in
an autoclave at 150-1700C, for 2 hours, in the complete
absence of air, may be fed directly to the feed mill without
mastication. The properties of the compounds and their
ability to be further refined (calendered, extruded., etc.)

ABSTRACT: An apparatus is described wh'Lch can be used to measure
the vapouropressure of vacuum oils in tui.e temperature range
150 - 3CO C. The rincipie of t`.c ;:anor.-.'Uer is as follows:
A flask of known volume is highiy evac@,iated and is coni-ected
to the evaporator in which the oil under irivestiU,,,':ition is kept
also under a hiE;!-- vacuum. The whole system; is -)laced in a
thermostatted oven where it can 1.)e he-ited up to a required
temperature. The vapour which is formed during the @_,eatinC
fills the volume of tl---e flask, un-l-formly and establishes a
pressure equal to the vap@-_)ur presz;ure above tl.e 1._@.Cuid. The
flask is then cut off from the evaporbtor and the mass of the
vapour in it ca-n be measured, e.g., ty co--densirit, the vapour

TITLE: Measurement of Vapour Pressure in a High-vacuum Pump
PERIODICAL: Pribory i telchnika eksperimenta, 1959, Nr 5,
pp 99 - 102 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: A description is given of two methods for measuring low
pressures of easily condensable vapours at high temperature.
1) Condensation Manometer
If a container kept at a stable temperature is filled with
a vapour of the liquid under consideration and then the
vapour is condensed, e.g. on the walls of a special
condenser, then from a knowledge of the weight of the
condensate, the volume of the condenser and the temperature
of the vapour, it is possible to calculate the vapour
pressure. Two such manometers have been built, one of which
is a glass manometer, which is used to measure the vapour
pressure of vacuu;n liquids under equilibrium conditions
at high temperature and the other is a metallic manometer
which has been used to measure vapour pressure in high-
vacuum pumps under working conditions. The metallic
Cardl/3 manometer is shown in Figure 1. The notation in Figur @el
SOV/120-59-5-2i/46
Measurement of Vapour Pressure in a High-vacuum pump
is as follows:
1 is the manometer cylinder;
2 is a dewar;
3 is a tube for ia-troducing the vapour and carries a
heating spiral;
4 is an external heater;
5 is a shut-off valve and
6 is the first stage of the high-vacuum diffusion pump.
The vapour is condensed on the cover of the dewar, 2, which
can be removed and weighed before and after the experiment.
2) Mercury Manometer with a Gas "Cushion't
Tibs type of manometer has been used by a number of workers
(Refs 4-7). The system is illustrated in Figure 3, in
which: 1 is a McLeod manometer;
2 are cooling traps;
3 is a needle valve;
4 is an ionisation manometer;
5 is a tube connecting the space filled with the
vapour to the manometer and
Card2/3 6 is a three-stage diffusion pump. LI/
SOV/120-59-5-21/46
Measurement of Vapour Pressure in a Hi.-h-vacuum. Pump
It is concluded that the McLeod-gauge method is simpler
and more convenient than the condensation manometer.

are Soviet (1 a translation from English), 2 English, 1
