TITLE: Low-Carbon Steel for Bimetal Production

ABSTRAM Bimetal strip from low-carbon steel (Armco iron)
and ASM alloy Is made by cold rolling. The maximum
allowed amount of additions in Armco iron is:

The ASM alloy consists of 3.5-5.5% Sb, 0.3-0.7% Mg,
and balance aluminum. Depending on the extent of
oxidation Armco Iron has a tendency toward cracking
(in ingots and billets) or lamination (in ready Bimetaly'.
Adherence to the carefully developed melting and pouring
practice is absolutely necessary in order to obtain
suitable metal. (1) Steel is smelted only In high
thermal capacity heat treating furnaces. (2) Steel
Card 1/2 is poured with a clean surface only to 1/2 of the mold

height with a 3ubse-,,,- nt crust formation. (3) Carbon
content, after melting, ranges from 0.25-0-70%. (4)
The speed at which C burns out during the refining
period must be not less than 0.0008% min. In order
to obtain carbon content below 0.07%, 1.5 to 2.0 tons
of ore have to be added to the charge per every 50
tons of heat alternating them with lime additions of
800 to 1,600 Icg. As a result, slag basicity before
pouring must be not lower than 2.11 with a ferrous
oxide content of 18-3N,. (5) For ladle deoxidation
alixminum (i,4oo to 1,700 gr/ton steel), metallic
manganese, and 75% ferrosillcon are added with a view
to produce a minimum 0.13% silicon and manganese
contents In finished metal. (6) The melt rolled on
the blooming mill Ls con.-,Idered satisfactory with a
maximum content of 0.005% Al. ('() To eliminate wear
of the stopper and of' ladle 11nIng, 400 to 800 kg of
lime was added to t.!,.e ladle. There are 3 figuresj and

Abstract : In 1953 experiments were conducted, using the Nantskaya
variety, on employing various parts of the carrot for
seed cultuvation. Planted were: 1) the whole carrot,
2) 1/2 carrot, 3) 1/3 carrot, and 4) 1/8 carrot. After
the carrots had been cut up they were left for 48 hours
in weak i1bimina ion and under moderate temperature con-
ditions; the place of the cut was dusted with a mixture
of 70% DDT and 30% chalk to prevent the development of
fungoid diseases. On the 15th day after planting the
root systems had attained 105 cm. in the control, 103 cm.
in the second variant, 95 cm. in the third variant, and
