The Tunnel Diode E02VE435
If-the diode is used'in a tuned amplifier, the above inequality
must be reversed.. The amplification factor of a tunnel diode can
be very large but, in practice, tuned-amplifiers7 are used to
assure, stability. In a switching circuit, Ro must biosmallex
than RNI. The switching time is of the order of 10- sec.
Various switching circuits using tunnel diodes are discussed in
Ref.4 (Lesk', I.A., Electronics 32 (1959), 6o). Finally, the
authors discuss very simple circuits using tunnel diodes. The
simplest oscillator using such a diode consists of a 1.5 V battery
in series with a resistance of 40 ohmsand a tunnel diode. The
diode is shunted by a wire-wound resistor of 6 ohms. This
oscillator produces a peak-to-peak signal of 100 MV at 5 to 10 Me/sec,
An equally simple bi-stable circuit can be constructed,

diode. Similarly, the inductance of the circuit must be kept as
low as practicable. The voltage-current curve in the vicinity of
zero voltage was found to be parabolic for some, but not for all,
samples of tunnel diodes. The equivalent circuit of the tunnel
diode for small signals in the region of negative resistance
consists of the negative resistance RN , shunted by the
capacitance C , and the resistance R. and inductance L. in
series with these. The limiting frequency is given by

The diode can be used in three different types of circuit;
oscillators, amplifiers and switching circuits. In amplifier and
oscillator circuits, the output impedance "seen" by the diode must
be larger than the absolute value of the negative resistance. In
an oscillator, the output impedance Ro must fulfil the further
condition Ro L

TEXT: The current-voltage characteristics of tunnel diodes are
usually explained with the aid of band theory and the tunnel effect.
In order to account for the so-called excess current;, localized
energy levels in the barrier region have to be invoked. The.
authors suggest a series of assumptions which might qualitatively
explain the characteristic curves of tunnel-diodes, including the
region of excess current, without localized leVels. The suggested
hypothesis has neither been worked out in detail nor has it been
tested experimentally. It includes the assumption of t~mnelling
from the conduction band of the n-region into the conduction band'of
the p-region and from the valence band of the n-region into the
valence bazid of the p-region. The authors further discuss the
measurement of characteristic curves by d.c. methods. To avoid
Oscillations, the total resistance of the measuring circuit must be
smaller than the absolute value of the negative resistance of the

Paradox of Present Theory of Fluctuations in Non-linear Systems
(Letter to the Editor)
the Onsager relations have been proved for the more general
case than that obtained by _assumtng the validity of the
second law. Nevertheless, Brinkman says the following
"Of course such a theory has a thermodynamical meaning only
if the operator XL P is constructed in such a way as to
give positive entropy production. The Onsager relations,
however, do appear even if this restrIction is not made."
The use of the second law in such non-linear theories does
not seem sufficiently justified. The second law must either
be proved from principles which are valid~ for known non,
non-linear systems, or else an experiment must be sought
that might contradict the assumption of general validity
of the second law.
At present, the most suitable systems for such investi-
gations are semiconductor diodes for high frequencies and with
high initial resistances. Such experiments are being
carried out by the author.
This is a slightly abridged translation.

Paradox of Present Theory of Fluctuations in Non-linear Systems
(Letter to the Editor)
This is incompatible with the second law of thermodynamics.
This paradox can be removed by assuming a different
equivalent circuit for the diode but others remain. Why
cannot a diode rectify fluctuations from an external source,
what*ver correlation between this source and the fluctuations
in the diode we assumel
The investigation of this paradox leads to criticism of the
fuvAnatentals of the second law, which is based on all
.previous experience and on statistical mechanics.
a) Non-linear systems, in this context, are not fully
understood (N.G. Van Kampen - Ref 7).
b) Statistical proofs usually assume the additivity of
certain operators (R. Fowler et al - Refs 8,9) - an assumption
not valid for non-linear systems.
One of the first attempts at constructing non-linear thermo-
dynamics vras by Brinkman (Ref 10) in 1958, founded on
Kramer's theory of Brownian qotion (Refs 11, 12). Here,

Title : Prophylactic Conditioning with New Preparations in the
Control of the Cobweb Tick in the Fall.
Orig Pub : DOkl- AN UZSSRo 1956, No lo.. 51-54.
Abstract : Emulsions of mercaptophos (0-07-0-09% of the active subs-
tance) and of waste products of sulphurous naphta (3%)
were tested for prophylactic conditioning in the fall be-
fore the ticks went into hibernation. The ticks perished
al st totally on the trees and on the weeds from mercap-
tophos, especially in the 0.09% concentration. The effec-
tiveness of sulphurous naphta on the trees was 95.5% in
the fall and 32.7% in the spring, while on the weeds it
was 65.4 in the fall and 82.8% in the spring. The ticks
were inaccessible for contact action on the trees in the
