Title On the Problem of the Foemation of Embryonic Cells from
the Yolk in Birds.
Orig Pub Nauka v Rumynskoy Narodnoy Respublike, 1953, 2, 57-86.
Abst The formation of cells from noncellular meterial of
bird's eggs (24 chicken, turkey, and other bird.eggs;
fixed preparations) was studied. The authors assert
that they have succeeded in observing the stages of the
transformation of the large globules of the yolk white
into cells. The conclusions drawn from the work fully
cuncur with the theoretical premises, results, and con-
clusions of analogous investigations conducted by O.B.
Lepishinskaya.

Studies kinetics or chem reactions occurring in melt-
Ing of metals. Analyzes dependence of velocity of
reversible reactions on temp, stating conclusion that
with rising of tenp of system, in vhich exothermic
reaction proceeds, resulting velocity considerablyin-
er"ses in beginning, sharply decreases to zero near
equil and changes its direction vith further tenp
rise, which still furtber will lead to increase of

A.BSTRACT: Ways of improving the quality of cupola fuel viere
shown by Academician Chizhevskiy in 1930. The produc-
tion of new foundry fuel on the basis of available
lean coals plus 25 to 301,' coal-tar pitch was started
shortly before the war. ~'o improve the foundry coke
supplied to the works in the Urals and in the East,
the gas coals in the charge of coke ovens were repla-
ced by leaned coal. Later, it was proved possible to
use Ural anthracites with an addition of coal-tar
pitch (70-80% anthracite, 10-150f. fat coal and 7-104f
coal-tar pitch). In order to improve the quality of
foundry coke supplied to the works in the European
part of the USSR, the author and V.S. Poznanskaya sug-
gested, in 1956, the production of special foundry

New Kinds of Cupola Fuel
The charge used for making briquets was composed of
"T" brand coal (poor in sulfur), some "Zh" brand coal
and coal-tar 2P' tch. The briqueting pressure amounted
to 150 kg/cm . The strength of the briquets was tes-
ted by dropping (96%) and by rubbing (59.3%). The 0
briquets were subjected to thermal treatment at 1000 C
The experimental use of the briquets in a cupola 600
mm in diameter permitted So increase the temperature
of the metal to 1430-1450 C and the output of the cu-
pola by 20% from 2 to 2.4 tons per hour. The cost of
the-new briquets is considerably lower than the cost
of the foundry coke produced in the Donets basin. Be-
sides, the manufacture of the briquets yields valuable
by-products. There are I table, 1 photograph and 4

TITLE: Peculiarities in Cupola Operation With Partial With-

PERIODICAL: Liteynoye Proizvodptvo, 1959, Nr 4, pp 9-10 (USzR)
AB6TRACT: The high requireniento which are i;iade on the quality
of cast iron, call for constant research to find ways
for its Pur--henting. Therefore, -pecial attention
must be given to a method of super-heating capt iron
by a partial derivation of the cupola ga-es through
the hearth and forehearth. If the free furnace charge
is activated at the botton, the combustion zone of the
coke is extended, which in turn effects a quper-heat-
ing of the cast iron and reduces the lops of heat when
it runs out into the hearth. This method iq used be-
cau-e no addition-1 .,.i-onxiel is needed. The conotruc-
tion of the cu;I-ol to be changed only in so far

part of the article examines peculiarities of this
method and discusses the conditions which are mopt
suitable to its application. When working with thi,.-
method, 15-20% of all the combuntion materials are
led through the hearth and forehearth. The amount of
air blown into the cupola can remain the -ame as upual.
As a remult, the quantity of air which actually goes
through the -haft i- reduced and the preppure of the
blast is diminiphed. This effect, however, is compen-
qated by the activation of the bottow layers of the
free furnace charge. The conditions are most favor-
able if the whole volume of the blast and, con-equent-
ly, the part diverted through hearth and forehearth
is increased. The longer the diameter of the cupola
and the higher the air consumption, the greater mu-zt
be the amount of gap diverted through the hearth.

PURPOSE: This book is intended for technical personnel in foundries.
COVERAGE- The book reviews metallurgical problems of melting cast iron in cupolas.
The melting processes of regular and special cast irons are discussed on the
basis of analysis of physicochemical conditions of these processes. Calculations
of the compositions of the cupola charge and slag, based on the charge -material
balance of the cupola process, are presented. Methods used for producing cupola
cast iron with low carbon and sulfur content are described. The author describes
methods of using chips in cupolas and the specific features ofmelting in "metal-
lurgical" cupolas the cast iron to be used in open hearth furnaces. A descrip-
tion of "metallurgical" cupolas with carburizing atmosphere, basic slag, and heated
blast is given. No personalities are mentioned. There are 73 references, all
