mestorozhdoniy)
!~_11ilODM,Lz Liteynoyo ~roizvodztvo, 1958, No. 4, pp 2-7 (USSR)
ABSTiiACTt Bentonite clays are very extensively used in 4'estern
burope and have nearly fullj replaced all other clay addi-
tives for molding mixes in the USA. However, they have been
very little used so far in the USSR because of their scar-
city and inaccessibility; in the Oglanlinskoye (Turkmenia)
and Askanskoye (Caucasus). About 10 betonite deposits have
b2en discovered in the Ukraine, the largest being the Cher-
kassy (Cherkaoskoye) deposit in the central Ukraine, Eouth
of Kiyev, and the Ocirbal. (Gorbskoye) in Zakarpntakaya Mast',
east of Uzhgorod. _11oth deposits are located near railroads
and highways. '2he first deposit hae a 40 m thicl, laypr of
clay at a dc2th of 20 m with an estimated .1.4 billion tons;
the second deposit has approximately IL6,8 million tons, and
bard 1/3 its 40 m clay ctratum is 7 m below the surface. Both depo-

mentioned. The artic1c. contains general information on com-
positions, physical and mechanical properties of bcntonitc
clays, as well as recommendations on the compositions of
foundry mixes with bentonite. It was revealed by exj~eriments
that, contrary to o,)inions in Soviet technical literature,
bentonite is well suited for dry moldinj;. The truot "Form-
razvedkal, tested the technological properties of' tho Gorbsk
bentonite 1-. 19111, in Leningrad plants. A special expedition
of the Institut --ashinovedeniya AN UkrSSR (Institute of
Mechanical Zngineering of the AS Ukr3SR) mined 12 t of ben-
tonite of the Cherka3sy deposit. Industrial tests were carried
out at the "Bollshevik", "Leninskaya Kuznitsa" and the Plant
of Automatic 141achine Tools imeni C;orlkiy (all in Kiyov).
The technology and the results of these tests are given. Tha
3ovnarkhoz of the Kiyev economic region is ort;anizinf; tin oren
mine and a clay-powdor plant at the Cherkassy deposit. The
information on the chemical composition and physical proper-
ties of the Ukrainian bentonite clays ic accompanied by compari-
sons with bentonite3lfound in the USA. The following ~,ersoris,

Colloidity as an Indicator of the Binding Properties of

PERIODICAL: Liteynoye proizvodstvo, 1958, Nr 10, p 10 (USSR)
ABSTRACTt GOST 3226-57 defines the control methods for bentonitic
clays by either crushing in the laboratory or colloidity
indication by Tumanskiy's method. Colloidity as an indi-
cator of the cohesive properties of bentonites was inve-
stigated by the Corresponding Member of AS Ukr SSR A.A.
Gorshkov assisted by Miss Ye.V. Vashkulei and V.Ye. De-
nisevioh. The chemical composition of 5 Soviet betonites
is tabulated (table 1). Their colloidity is determined
by the Tumanskiy method (table 2). The researchers point-
ed out that GOST 3594-47, in its former version meets the
requirements with respect to the binding properties of ben-

I Colloidity as an Indicator of the Binding Properties of Bentonitic Clays
colloidity does not indicate the quality of a bentonite
with respect to binding properties. There are 2 tables,

TITLE% Study of oxide scabs in Iron-chromium melts'
SOURCEt AN SSSR. Izvestlys. Metally, no. 2, 1966, 53-57
TOPIC TAGSt Iron alloy, chronium alloy, Tetal scol ng, oxide formation
ABSTRACTI The composition and structure 11) of oxide s:abs formed on the surface of Fe-
.,,Cr alloys In air at 15500C were sti~die~-by chemical, petrographic, and x-ray analyseq.
The observed constant magnetite content with changing chromium content Indicates that
the formatlon of magnetite does not obey the usual laws of Irreversible thermodyna-
--rdes. The formation of magnetite In this case Is thought to be due to a predominant
qff-fusion of Iron through a solid scab consisting mainly of chromium oxides. The
corms tion of the remaining part of the film occurs In conformity with thermodynamic
t
laws. The phase composition may be described an followss
1 up to 4% Cr - two-phase region - FeFG204+FeCr2Ot;,,
11 from 4 to 9% Cr - three-phase region - FeFo 0 +
2 4 Cr)Cr2O4+Cr2o3;
III above 9% Cr - two-phase region - (Fe, Cr)Cr2o4+Cr2o3'
