Pb 02 ana Ta'Ta 0 Ni 0 were studied when MnO PbO or Ni 0 were converted in'~o 2 5 2 3 29 29 2 3 the lower oxides. A sintered tantalum electrode was coated witti oxiae 0 about 1200 IL thick by anodizing in 0.1 N H2SO 4 at 10 ma/cM2 and 120 v ana soaked at this voltage for 8 hrs to achieve the maximum drop in leaxa ge current (to 0.06,,a) . Tt was then immersed in solutions of Mn, Pb, or Ni nitrates, the corresponcing oxide being formed by pyrolyzing, and Ina-Y the electrode was coated with a graphite suspension. The oxygen content of the oxides was alterea by cathodic polarizatior in 4 N KOH, nitrogen Card 1/5 S/076/62/036/011/005/021 Mechanism of tne rectil.ying ... B101/B180 atMOSDhere, at 0.1, ma/cm The capacitive and ohmic components of tre impedance were measured witn an a-c measuring bridge at 200C, , - 160C cps , V-- 0.5 v, and various constant anode voltages. The dependence of t:.& thermo-emf of tne Cu - MnO 2 and Cu - Ni2 03couples on the oxygen conLt:nt o,.r' the oxides was also determinea. Resultss(l)When Mn02 is converted to MnC(OH) the capacitance of Ta,Ta 205 MnO2first decreases gradually, tnen rapialy. The resistance DaSses through a minimum, leakage current a maximum. (2) When PbC) 2 is converted to a lower oxide the capacitance of Ta;Ta20 5 PbO2 first rises slowly, then more rapidly; resistance crops, leakage current grows consicerably. (5) During Ni 205 reauction the capacitance of Ta Ta20 5 Ni2o5 first rises, then falls cons-.derao.'Y; resistance at first falls sLr-Qenly ana then increases slowly; t~.e leaKage current passes through a maximum. (4) For the Cu - MnO 2 and Cu - Ni 20 11 couples, reauction of tne oxide changes the type of conductivity. n-typu MnO2 becomes p-type MnO(OH), n-type Ni 20 5becomes p-type NiO. Goncl~ision: raz-6 2/3 S/076/62/036/01 1/00~/C21 Mechanism of the rectifying ... B101/B180 The rectifying action of the capacitors is due to the formation of an in- sulating layer of stoichiometric Ta205 or p-type Ta 205 at the interface between Ta205 and YnG 2? PDO 21 or Ni203during the anodic polarization of Ta. The resistance of triis layer depends on the content and chemical potential of the oxygen in the oxides which are in contact with the Ta 205V and on the type of their conauctivity.
