A study was made of the separation of mixtures of isomeric nitrotoluenes and nitro- chlorobenzenes, by fractional distillation and crystallization. Mononitration of toluene is carried out by addition at 250 of mixed acid containing 2EI% HNO,3 and 56.5% HISC~, in an amount of 99% of the theory. The resulting mix- ture of isomeric mononitro-toluenes (yield 96%) contains 60% o-nitro-, 34% p-nitro- and 4% m-nitro-toluene. By distillation of this mixture through a column, 12 mm in diameter, 110 cm high, containing a spiral packing, at 12 mm Hg, are obtained the following: light cut 0.5%, fractions C ard 3/7 Hungary /Chemical Technology. Tbr most favorable temp. for the formation of PhNUEt by treating PhNHj with PhNRt, was 280*. PhNH, with PhNEts save also CA and Primary and secondary ring- ethylLted "NU& derivs.. the amt. of which increased .ubst t6ey at and above S50'. In the space velocity range from 75-376 mi./hr. when the mole prq)ortion of PhNHz to FhNEtj was 1:1. no change could be detected in the conversion to PhNHEt. At lower space velocities more of the sing-ethylated amine3 formed. The resence or derivs. in the puluct was of aminmthylbenune isomers explained as formed from N-Rt derivs. and not by direct eth la" of the catbort ring. At higher temps. secondary amri: with Ut groups on the ring and CjH4 formed. In expts. with PhNIIRt and PhNRt2, and mixts. of PhN)lt and PhNEtt, the yield of sing-substituted primary amines; f Ir 'went up with temp. Primary amines gave no Et groups Ic titution on the N sub, atom. but constituted. parallel with the formation of CH., one of the terminal stages of the ethylation process. This was verified when o-aminoethyl- benzene was passed through M,O. at 280' (no reaction oc- curred); at 350' 3% PhNH3, 3% product with higher mol. wt., and CA formed. Thus, there was no migration of the Et radical from the ring back to the N atom. The alkylation of PhNH, by CA failed to produce PhNHEt or other alkyl derivs. of 1. even at higher temps. During the usual ethylation only traces of PhNIj fortned at 2W. Wt itio--Welevated teiiipi.-thi-aria. of-PliNH grew and at 340' was 6%. The authors gave a detailed figure of the react on mechanism proposed. This involved introduction I of the Ht group through carbonium Ions fashioned by the alkylating agents under the Influence of protons which were formed from HjO at lattice defects of the A130i. The dona- ion of an Et from N to the ring or to another N and the K;;~ation of CJJ. could proceed through s(nne intermediate stage. - - KART03,J.; ZOLLM, Gyula (Budapest); LZVAI. With the aid of these equations is is possible to calculate rapidly and conveniently the critical an- gular frequency of linear control lloops with multiple capacities. The .equations involvej-fn-these calculations were given and examples were presented to illustrate their appi-ications. Orig. art. has: 18 formulas and I table.
