The author discusses the very rare occurrence of post-caustic cicatricial phar)n-
gitis, in connection with oesophagitis of the same nature, and its extraordinary re-
sistance to any treatment including excision, ciectro-coagulation. thermocauteriza-
tion as well as to dilatations with acrylic moulds, or bougie. From the anatomo-
pathological point of view this type of pharyngitis occurs in the form of a funnel or
with a cicatricial diaphragm. In the latter case a small orifice allows respira-
tion but to an absolutely insufficient degree, and is the cause of an important
dyspnoea. At the same time, as far as nutrition is concerned, it permits the passa-
ge of liquids only. In such a case the author recommends the creation of a second
lateral orifice; a nylon thread is then passed through both orifices and the ends
brought out through the nasal fossa. After healing. which in general occurs after
30 days, the orifices are united by a cut performed with Gigli's bandsaw. The ori-
fice will become sufficiently large to enable a normal function.

The authors administered for 15 days a hydro-alcoholic extract of calf tonsils.
prepared cold, to hypotrophic infants, aged 6-20 months. with subacute adeno-
idlits and repeated fever attacks. It was found that the weight diagram was strong-
ly stimulated, having rapidly reached the normal level. that the appetite and well-
being Increased and that a florid aspect set in during and after the treatment. The
aspect of the tonsils did not change. but it was found that the adenoidal focus under-
went a spontaneous healing. Also noteworthy is the important stimulation of the
general metabolism of the infant treated with such a tonall extract. ()13,7,170)
