TITLE: Some Physical, Chemical, and Technical Characteristics of Electrolytes for Steel Electropolishing PERIODICAL: Zhurnal prilcladnoy Ichimii, 1959, Vol 32, Nr 10, pp 2242- 2247 (USSR) ABSTRACT: In their previous study (this journal, 1959, Vc;l 32, NP p 1060) the authors described new electrolytes Vor steel- polishing,con8isting of sulfuric and phosphoric acid mixtures with "unicol" corrosion inhibitor, sul-rested by Balezin, Barannik, and Putilova in their study, "App.1 i- cation of Acid Corrosion Inhibitors" (Prlinunenlye ingibitorov kislotnoy It_- -, ), Gosichimizdat, M-s(-,,-jw- Leningrad, 1948. The present study deals with the length of the service period, the density, viscosity, t~:1ectrical conductivity, and other characteristics of this elQctrolyte as well as with the changes in these characteristics dur- ing the electropolishing process, and compares it with Card 1/4 the sulfophosphochroiniurn electrolytes (called 1'r,oiii ~iere Some Physical, Chemical, and Technical 75670 Characteristics of Electrolytes for Co Steel Electropolishing V/80-32-10-19/51 on in this abstract "SPC electrolytes"). T'he experi- ments were conducted with ShIO-i-15 high-carbon steel anodes (Ulcr. Ichim. zh - , 1959, Vol 25, P 33'-) /1 i.n a:i electrolyte of' the following composition (in H PO 3 4 35%; H 2S04 50%; water 15',"v; and 2.5 vol',imetric of MN-10 type "unicol" inhi tor; the current den ' sity varied from I to 100 amp/dm the temperature was from 18 to 250; no separating diaphragm was used between the cathode and anode, and the electrolyte composition was not corrected during the experiment. It was de- termined that the service period of the investi `;ated electrolyte was considerably longer than tiiat Of' SPC electrolyte. This was due to the separation of t,!,,e electrolyte from the precipitate after the passai,-e of about 600 amp hr/liter and a resultant correction of the electrolyte composition, which restored its (21ectro- Dolishing properties. The density, viscosity, and electrical conductivity of the freshly prepared el:ec- Card 2/4 trolyte were practically Identical with that o1i tl6e SFC Some Physical, Chemical, and Technical Characteristics of Electrolytes for Steel Electropolishing Card 3/4 75670 SOV/80---?12-10-19/rl electrolyte; during the process of electropol13h'.1',J-,, however, the changes in the above characteristIcs ;-,rere less pronounced and different from those of the SPC electrolyte. The density and viscosity first increased, then decreased, and the electrical conductivity inci-eaged in a continuous manner. The yield based on current (in %) first dropped sharply with increasing current deiisLty, then decreased slowly; it increased somewhat at htgh cur- rent- density values. The decrease in the yield in the course of the process was much slower than in the process conducted with HC electrolyte. At a current density of 75 to 100 amp/dm (at which the electropolishiner, takes place) the yield based on current decreased ilr,:3.1.:-,~:ifica~il.ly and practically in a linear manner. At the highest current density (100-ampe/sq. decimeter) used, the electro-chemical polishing without addition of inhibitor is noted only in concentrated acid mixtures (10% of H20), rich in phosphoric acid (80, 70%). A low surface quality is obtained. The introduction of a small addition of inhibitor intensely broadens the composi- tion of acid mixtures in wbich the electro-polishing is observed, decreases the current densities that are needed for best electro-polishing, and Improves its Cord 11.3-- IACCESSION NR: AP4024T72 Iquality. The optimum amount of addition of inhibitor is 2-5 to 5.0% by volume of lacid mixture volume. Steel is not electro-polished in electrolytes with an in- Ihibitor composed only of suLfurric acid (without phosphorus) or rich in sulfuric acid (more than 50-60%). It is polished in electrolytes made only of phosphoric :acid with inhibitor, but to a poorer extent and with higher current densities in the case of electrolytes made of acid mixtures rich in phosphoric acid and addi- tion of inhibitor. In electrolytes with 2.5 to 5.0% of inhibitor, the steel is electro-polished with a composition of acid mixtures which vary iii wide limits weight, %): H2 from 10 to 20,'RjP04, from 9D to 30, H2S04 correspondingly from 0 to 6o (with H20, 10) and H3P04, from 60 to 30.1 H2so4 correspondingly from 0 to 50 (with H 0? 20). The best electro-chemical polishing of high carbon steel is observea in electrolytes made from acid mixtures of the following composition (weight, %): B201 10; H3PO41 70 to 50; H2S04 correspondingly from 20 to 40 and additions of inhibitor "unikol PB-5't from 2-5 to 5-0% (by volume of acid mixture ivolume)) at an anode current density from 25 to 100 A/sq- decimeter depending on electrolyte composition.
