Abstract: The authors have developed an improved 2titrimetric
procedure for the determination of S04 with ben-
zidine (1). 10 ml of the solution to be analyzed
containing 0.03-0.2 gm S04 - is treated with 5U nil
of I solution (6-7 gnis I are dissolved in 20 nil 6
N HC1 and the solution is diluted with water to one

Abstract: which is formed on standing (15-30 min) Is filtered
through a paper filter (with auction), washed with
water-3-4 times using:-3 ml-portion-6, -150 ml of
hot Water' are*--added:together with-a-few drops of
an 6thanolic solution of phenolphthalein., and the
resulting solution is titrated with 0.1 N NaOH to
a persistent red color. More accurate results are
obtained when the titration is carried out in the
presence of ethanol (- 15 ml) which dissolves the
I formed in the titration, When the latter proce-
dure is used, the results obtained from cold titra-
tions match those obtained when hot solutions are
used The nVhod has been applied to the determin-
atio~ of S04 - in chromoammonium and aluminopotas-

ABSTRACT': An electrical method for determining the arrount of air in a unit volume
of lung tissue at any moment is described. Electrical determination of this impor-
tant index of external respiratory function avoids the difficulties inherent in me-
chanical methods requiring determination of reserve air, or those which arise when
parts of the lung are considered individually. Air in the alveoli is considered as a.
quantity of small uniform spheres with an electrical conductivity tending toward
zero, surrounded by blood and tissue with a total (finite) conductivity and regarded

as electrically equivalent to a circuit connected in parallel. Assuming the total
specific conductivity of the three-component (air, blood, tissue) medium to be a
function of the amounts of each component present, the amount of air per unit volume
of lung can be calculated from the measured conductivity, of a part of the living
lung, using the following formula, which contains empirically derived correction
factors for.pulmonary pooling, etc.:
