Abstract- Short sketch of Mechnik 's work in the field of applied veter-
iniAry microbiology. Some little known episodes are brought out,
concerning reactionary attacks against Mechnikov and his co-
workers in connection with practical work of the Odessa bacterio-
logical station. It is noted that among Mechnikov's students
working with him at the Pasteur Institute, there were quite a
few veterinary physicians and that he was an honorary member of
the Kharkov and Kazan veterinary institutes, as well as of the
Kazan veterinarian society.

ABSTRACT: The author st;ites that the successful organization of
correspundence training depends on qualified educational
literature being made available to the students. Direct
education and that by correspondence have the same object -
i. e. the training of highly qualified specialists.
There is, however, a great difference in the training
methods,hence there must also be different manuals. The
correspondence school manual must be prepared from the point
of view that it is to replace the teacher, thus providing the
student with all the necessary instruction. This, however,
does not mean that the teacher himself need not help the
atudont systematically and not maintain control over the

ABSTRAM The wiring scheme of an artificial commiation is shown (Pig 1).
which is a modification of the scheme developed by 1. L. Kagenov
(Ref 2)0 applied to the full-wave rectification of a single-phase
current. In order to ensure that the second anode commutates before
the natural commutation point, an additional unit consisting of a
condenser, a charging induction coil, and an aurl"ary valve is
introduced. The made of operation of this unit is explained. In
order to be able to form an opinion concerning the efficiency of the
o1rouit described, it is shown in what way the efficiency of each of
the elements of the additional unit am be determined. Also the
influence exercised by artificial commutation upon the principal
elements of the rectifier unit (main transformer, valve. ate.) is
investigated. Formulas an deduced for the oommutating capacity (6),
for the charging induction coil (7) and1br the charging current (8).

regulate the degree of compensation of the reactive power required
by an electric locomotive within certain limits. In spite of the

Abstract: A method modifying the stomach resection method by
Moynigen, applying an anterior colonic anastomsis and
an aMitional intartestinal anastomosia, prevents the
flow of the stomach content Into the adducting genu

and of pancreatic juice into the stomach completely.
The liberation of the duodenum prbvents the develop-
