Calcium cyanamide is a valuable artificial manure, Its frequently harmful in-
fluence is clue to neglect of simple prophylactic measures, accessible to every
agricultural worker. The factors necessary for the development of post-calcium
cyanamide lesions as an occupational disease are discussed, based on observa-
tion and treatment of 45 patients. Besides the subjective symptoms, skin lesions,
lesions of mucous membranes, and - in several cases -general symptoms as
well were noted, From accurate analysis of pathological symptoms, laboratory
routine examinations, complex tests of the liver function and functional skin
teats conclusions are drawn concerning the toxic action of calcium cyanamide
and the importance of the conditicn and care of the skin. The value of skin func-
tional tests for the possibility of excluding from work the persons with a decreas-
ed resistance of the skin is emphasized. A number of directives are given, which
it observed will prevent to a large extent the appearance of the described patho-
logical lesions; methods of treatment are discussed.

The determinations were made with the Friedemann's and EEange's method. The
pyruvic acid level in the blood was determined in 10 healthy pers~Dns in the fasting
state. The mean value amounted to 0.38 t 0.05 mg./ 100 ml. ~~ number of de-
terminations were carried out in normal persons and in carbohydrate metabolism
disorders. The pyruvic acid level and the glucose level in the ble~od were de-
termined simultaneously after 50 g. of glucose orally. The resin+ts obtained up to
now allow the following conclusions to be drawn: (1) In persons not showing any
disorders of carbohydrate metabolism no distinct dependence of 'the pyruvic acid
level on the glucose level was found. (2) In cases of carbohydrate metabolism
disorders sometimes a decrease of the pyruvic acid content in tFle first hour
after the oral administration of glucose existed. (3) It seems worth while to
determine simultaneously the pyruvic acid content in the blood aind in the urine.
