TITLE: The Age of Some Conglomeratic Beds in the Northern Caucasus (0 vozraste nekotorykh konglomeratovykh tolshch Severnogo Kavkaza) PERIODICAL: Materialy Vses. n.-i. geol. in-ta, 1955, Nr 9, pp 127 130 ABSTRACT: Two series of red conglomerates and sandstones, of different ages, are present in the northern Caucasus. They are situated in the region where Paleozoic rocks occur. The age of one series (in the northwestern part of the region) has been defined as Lower Permian by the discovery of Walchia. The series rests on Upper Carboniferous sa-n-d-stones with Stephanian plants and is overlain by limestones containing Upper Permia Card 113 1 The Age of Some Conglomeratic Beds (Cont,) 15-57-12-16782 fossils. The second series, situated farther south contains cobbles of limestone with Upper and, rarely, Lower Permian fossils (fusulinids). This series is in fault contact with the adjacent rocks, and it is consequently difficult to determine its age. Lower Jurassic deposits rest on top of it. The author concludes that the series may be Lower Triassic. Information is given on the paleo- geographic environment in which the series of Lower Permian con- glomer4tes and sandstones accumulated. The accumulation occurred during'irregular but large fluctuations of the earth's sufface. A continental environment apparently prevailed at the beginning of the Early Permian. Toward the end of the Early Permian a shallow-water marine basseyn (basin) covered a considerable part of the area of the present central Caucasus, and clastic sediments accumulated. The entire region of the central Caucasus subsided at the beginning of Late Permian time.. At the boundary between the Paleozoic and Mesozoic, intense movement occurred, and this led to regression of the Permian sea. Early Triassic transgression involved extensive Card 2/3 15-57-12-16782 The Age of Some Conglomeratic Beds (Cont.) erosion of the underlying deposits. On the whole, the problem of formation of the red beds is very complex and requires further stud, Card 3/3 1. M. Klebanova ' KIKU &4(AKUY. K.V. Upper Permian deposits of the northwestern Caurmsus. Leri- zoic Lagenides (0 filogenii i stratigraficheskom zriachenii paleozoyskikh lagenid) PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1958, Vol 122, lir 3, PP 481 - 484 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The biostratigraphic schemes for the Paleozoic have been worked out during the last 25 years, in many cases by the use of foraminifera (especially the fusilinids). The significance of the Lagenides has not been recognized until recently. First, an overall view of their evolution must be established, and the relations between the individual groups of this order must be clarified. Up to now, very little work has been done along these lines (Refs 5,lo,13,14,16, and 17). The author has made a study of the Kazanskiye Lagenides of the Russian platform during the last year, along with a special investigation of transitional f-orms among the individual genera. These studies have made possible final Card 1/4 divisions among several late Permian and early Mesozoic The Phylogeny and Stra,igra~,,h4c Si,,nificance of the SOV/2c-122-1-44/'Z- Paleozoic La--~enides genera. These data, along with the data from the literature (Refs 1-4, 6-7, and 11), enable the author to propose a phylogenetic scheme (Fig 1). The ancestral forms of the Lagenides were single- chambered of a lagene type and occur in Ordovician and Silurian strata. Exactly when the more complicated shells originated from this simple form is not precisely clear. An overall view of the evolution of the Lagenides shows their development from single-chambered to multi-chambered forms, and from forms with rounded profiles to a flattened form with 3 or more edges. The changes in t",.e shell morphology, in general, viere towarl more elaborate shells, and this apparently led to a sturdier shell The micro- structure of the shell wall apparently Ihanged least in the course of evolution. On the basis of the stratigraphic distribution of the Lai;-enidea in the Paleozoic, 4 stages of development are recognized: Card 2/4 1) From the Ordovician to the middle of the Devonian. The Phylogeny and Stratigraphic Significance of the 0'1/2o-122 _2 S Paleozoic Lagenides During this time the primitive representatives of the order existed, such as species of the genera La~Tena , and possibly also the first Nodosaria . 2) The latter half of the Devonian, during which a relative intensive development of species and genera took place. 3) A sharp reduction in the number of Lageniden ocetirs in this sta--e and only the most primitive forms -survived f rc I th the Devonian. The 4 period begins with Sakmarskiy time. The variety and quantity of LaCenides increased enormously, although initially no new genera appeared. However, later, a considerable divergencie of the La,~enides occurred, and new genera appeared. Important changes occurred at the Pal eozoic-I'lesozoic boundary. Several new Oenera ap2eared and developed*further, along with those genera which also occurred in the Permian. The greatest development of the La-,;enides occurred in the .Jurassic time. Thus, these data concerning the phylogeny and stratigraphic distribution of the La-enides can be used for a stratigraphic classification. of the Paleozoic Card 3/4 sediments of the USSR from the Devonian to the Permian. Aqueous 57* PVA solution was allowed to stand for 20 days in a 1200 ml, 40 cm tall glass cylinder, and 100 ml. portions were then collected from the upper (PVA-u) and from the lower (PVA-1) layers. The reactivity of PVA-u and -1 was then compared. FVA-l was found to be more susceptible to oxidation by H 202 to the poly- ketone (both at room temperature and at 900C)9 the difference in Card 1/3 el5l 621010100210011001 A study of the reactivity ... D204YI)307 reactivity being essentially indepQndent of the conditions of oxida- tion. This is ascribed to a reduced availability of the OIL groups in PVA-u, caused by a more convoluted configuration of the chains. In agreement with this hypothesis, FVA-l was also found to Le more susceptible to alkaline methylation, with Me SO 9 by the method of Losyev and Trostyanskaya MOM, 17, 122 (19Z-7)~. The maximum tem- perature oE this reaction was also renched earlier by PVA-1. The differential rcactivity disappeared when the samples were heate(I or uv-irradiated prior to methylation, while greater reactivity (part- icularly in I'VA-u) was observed in the presence of Ba". This is explained by partially increased convolution of chains in PVA-1 and straightening out of those in PVA-u, caused by the destruction of structure-stabilizing lyospheres under the action of uv, heat and the dehydrating influence of Ba ions.
