Abstract The results of a study are described which was nade on physical
properties and water characteristacs of the diverse culti-
vated soils in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR. The
drained well cultivated turf-gley and turf-podzolic gley soils
arc distinguished from the non-drained soils by reduced spec-
ific wei0it in the hard soil stage, greater porosity, water-
holding capacity, capillary water content and better aeration.
In connection with this fact the grain crop yield on drained
soils is 1/3 to 2 times hi&ier than on non-drained soils.
