ABSTRACT. The authors call attention to the fact that, despite the large number of
1: published works dealing with the use of unidimensidnal schemes In the study or magneto-
gasdynamic flows In channels, there is a frequent failure to bear in mind the assumptions
on the basis of vfhich the equations of the unidimensional system were derived. As -a
result, there is 46o indication of the real flows, to & study of which the results of the
investig ation. of the obtained equations are applicable. The present article contains some
comments on stationary flows in connection with this problem. The authors note that the
equations of unidimensional magnetogaodynamice are normally derived from the full system

of equations with the following additional assumptions: 1. the volumetric electromagnetic
1i force F acts only in the direction of the flbw (for 6iample, along the x axis); 2. all
components of electromagnetic values B = H, E, j depend only on x; 3. Ile magnetic
field pkeservesits direction along the floiW (for example, along the z axis), while the
electrical field E! and the density vector of ~ the curreint j are directed along the y axis;
that is, vectors B and E are mutually perpendicular and the flow occurs in crossed
fields. From 4sumptions I and 2 it folldws that In the case of a force F, not equal to
I zero, vector B Must have only two compohents By"and Bz. In the case of a sufficiently
large magnetic Reynolds number Re it also follows from assumptions I and 2 that the
m
ratio B -B - remains unchanged along the flow. If the flow-of a nonviscous gas satisfies
conditi&s 3, the motion and induction equations take on t6 following form:

approximation. from the general equation of magnetogardynamics, with assumption I - 3,
it follows that E ~"- const. along the channel; If, In a fiectangular channel, the electrodes.
arranged at,a distance y , are Ideal conductors and, closed through the external net, there
will arise on them a poiAtial difference U = Eyo. 71c following question Is posed and
discussed in the 0~pcr: In which of the two cases - U = const. or E = const. - does the
unidimcnsional qatem more accurately de .scribe the actual behavior of the flow. In the
authors' view. p56perly organized experimaintation4ould permit the development of a
unidimensional system of magnotogaadynarnic diffus or flown, much in the same manner as
this hai already been done for a case in which no magnetic field to present. The solution
of the equation system-of the unidimensional approximation is also considered. It is
noted that with the variational problem formulated one way or die other, a system of
ordinary differential equations can be obtained, the solution of which will provide the un-
known optimum. An the opinion of the authors, the, most Important point is the selection of
premises which render possible the application of the unidimensiona sy t m. For an
elucidation of this question, they discuss the simplest problem of finding an Isothermic
generator of maidmum power on the condition that the flow velocity along die channel In
constant. In accordance with their previous development of the subject, the authors
assums.that the induction of the magnetic field B remains unchanged along the channel,

with the channel.having a constant width ibetween the poles of the magnet. An analysis Is
made of the power of the same generator on the assumption that E = U = const. In the
Y
examples given In the article, It Is also pdssible t6 consider the dependence of the con-
ductivity on the,~ressure. In each case, this hasio effect on the qualitative character
of the.relationsIobtained. The effect of friction Is'also discussed for the case ofT= const.;
Having- determified the optimal operational regimes of a magnetogasdynamic apparatus
on the assumpti'6n that T and u are constant, the authors point out that all the considera-
tions Oresented in the article can also be ~6xtended 1o cases in which the constancy of T and
u is noi assumed. The proper formulation of the variational problem makes it possible
to reduce the taipk of finding the optimal mode to th~ solution of a system of ordinary
differential equations. At the present state of the computer art, the solution of such a
system presents no particular difficulties., The authors emphasize thatthe solutionof suchpro-
blems is meaningful only if there is somedegree of certainty thatthe assumptions, or which
the unidimensional idealization is based, are sufficientlyjustified. The exwnples considered

the final solution is extremely significant. A determination of the degree of Justification of
,specific hypotheses In a unidimensional system Is Iiiipossible within the framework of the
system itself. Here what in required is either experimentation or a sufficiently thorough
theoretical analysis of plane and three-dimensional flows. Orig. art. has: 3 figures and

The method is a generalization of one used by N. I. Po-'Iskiy (Teplofizika B'"sokikh
