TEXT: Results of the studies of the Kavkazkaya gravimetri- cheskaya ekspeditsiya.(Caucasian Gravimetric Expedition)'of the Institut geofiziki AN;Gruz.SSR (Institute *of Geophysics of the AS Gruz. SSR) carried out between 1955 and 1958, in the region.of the Bol'shoy Kavkaz. are, described. The measurements were carried out on Norgard gravimeters. Two simultaneous observations were taken which secured good control. Prior to the field work, the apparatus was studied and particularly careful determination of temperature coefficients, calibration in field conditions and determination of the stability of the rate of division, was made. Card 1/3 Studies of gravitational field ... S/169/62/000/008/015/090 E202/E192 The survey was based on 41 supporting points which are linked through the initial Tbilisi point with the Potsdam grid. The results of survey (1902 points) were completed by 57 pendulum points and 1393 points collected by industrial organisations. Method of survey in difficult and inaccessible mountainous regions is described. The errors in the determination of the bnomalica are described. It is shown that in order to increase the accuracy of the gravity force reduction in mountainous regions, it is of greater importance to determine more accurately the density than the elevation of the point. The 429 (Buge) anomalies are strongly deformed by the effect of the topography and hence for all the 3400 points the effect of the topography was taken into considera- tion within a radius of 200 km. Brunce and Zhongolovich (iongolowicz) corrections were incorporated in the observations. A brief description of the gravitational field of Caucasus in the "free air" (Fay&) reduction 6.1g, and local topographic jti2g (Buge) reduction is given. Simultaneously with the survey, studies of rock densities were carried out which showed that the belt of density changes decreases with the increasing age of the rocks, and Card 2/3 4 Studies of gravitational field ... s/169/62/000/008/015/090 E202/E192 the average density values tend asymptotically to a limit. Saysmi- choskiye issledovaniya, no. 6, 1965, 66-76 TOPIC TAGS: structural geology, earth crust, seismology, deep seismic sounding, oceanic crustal structure, Hoho,,,diocontinuity ABSTRACT: The structure of the earth's crust in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov basins is analyzed on the basis of: a) quantitative inter- pretation of the regional gravity field (Bouguer reduction) and mag- netic anomalies; b) records of the Caucasian and Crimean seismic sta- tions'on the propagation of the first arrival 11 of L8 and R9short- period surface waves traversing the basin; and c) records of first arrivals of P and S waves from near earthquakes during.,the period 1955-1960. In addition, those deep_aeismic-soundin'~data which are available for the northern half of the sea so well an"geological 1/3 evidence and density data for the adjacent areas to the north and south' are utilized. The Black Sea Basin gravity anomaly is positive; over the deep-water portion it is a latitudinally-elongated, large regional maximum, which rather regularly decreases toward the coast; in the littoral 'zone it becomes negative, with larger negative values in the Caucasus* Mountainous Crimea and the northern part of the coastline are exceptions, showing high positive values which decrease toward the north. Records of elastic waves generatediby earthquakes recorded at the Tbilisi, Sochi, Simferopol', and Yalta Stations were utilized to determine, from the S-P travel-time curves, the structure of the earth's crust at eight points around the Black Sea and one point In the sea. The crustal thickness under the continent varied from 43 to 49 km, with the sedimentary, graniticl and basaltic layers amounting* to 8, 18, and 23 km, respectively. Under the sea southwest of Sevastopol the crustal thickness reached 33 km. The granitic layer in the Black Sea Basin, determined from L and R 9 short-period w ave records. has been found'to thin out towarg the central part of the sea and to either absent in the deep-sea portion (h > 200 km) or is too thin to be detected by this method. The depth of the Mohorovicic discontinuity in this region varies from 22 to 25 km in the central ptrt of the sea and from 35 to 43 km in the coastal areas.' The presence of a thick layer of sediments in the crust under the basin Card 213 ACC NR- AT60tO299 appears to support the thesis that its structure is continental, but the lack of a granitic layer suggests that it is of the oceanic type. The authors think that the structure is intermediate, and charac- teristic of inland and marginal sees* Orig, art@ tins: 3 figures. The granitic layer has a thickness of 10-15 km in the coastal areas of the*Black Sea, but decreases evenly, finally pinching out near the deep-water part of the basin. The 20-23-km thick basaltic layer in i the coastal regions of the Black Sea decreases to a th~ickness of i7-9 1cm at the ci;nter of the western part of the sea and to a thicknes; of 10-14 kmat the center of the eastern part. TITLE: Improving the Quality of the Inside Surface of Tubes When Reducing the Diametric Pitch During Piercing Pmwicn: stall, 1961, No. i, p 56 TEXT: On the "400't type tube rolling mill of the Zakavkazskiy me".allurgi- cheskly Zavod (Transcaucasian Metallurgical Plant) carbon steel tubes, 168, 219, 245, 273 and 325 mm in diameter and tubular products, 188 and 243 mn in diameter are manufactured. About 50% of the production consists of 219 mm-diameter tubes. The roll-caliber of the automatic rolling mill (designed by GIPROMEZ), for 219 jw~ diameter tubes, has the following dimensions: height-H 234 mm; width-B 248 mm, the B:H ratio 1.06. Formerly these tubes were rolled from billets, 222mm in diameter, with one piercing operation but to improve their shape, billets 180 mm in diameter were used Instead, and tho final dimensions of the tube blank were ob- tained on two pi6roings. HoweVer, by employing billets of smaller diameter, the diametric pitches increased sharply on the first piercing mill, as a result of which more 2nd class and 2nd quality tubes were produced owing to internal cinder- Card 1/3 s/133/61/ooo/oo1/ooq/0l6 A054/AO33 Improving the Quality of the Inside Surface of Tubes When Reducing the Diametric Pitch During Piercing ing. Since January 1960, the 219 m-diameter tubes have therefore been rolled with a smaller roll caliber (H - 220 mm, B = 232 mm, B:H = 1.055), resulting in a decrease of the total diametric pitch. This decrease, with the simultaneous in- crease in pitch on the second piercing mill reduced the pitch on the first pierc- Ing mill about 3.7 times, while the mandrel diameter was out to 120 mm instead of 147 mm. The simultaneous cut in machining time resulted in a better utilization of the second piercing mill (when rolling 219 mm-diameter tubes) which thus no longer limited the operation of the whole mill. Using the new diameter of the tube blank the dimensions of the tube rolling tools could be reduced, the number of operating stands decreased from 7 to 5 andp consequently, the consumption of rolls and electric power was lowered. I., Chief of the Piperolling Group TsZL TITLE: Improving the Quality of Thin Walled Pipes PERIODICAL: Metallurg, 1961, No. 2, PP. 31-32 TEXT:~ In order to produce large-diameter (325 and 273 mm) thin-walled pipes, it Is imperative to reduce to a minimum the amount of blisters on the internal pipe surfaces. An investigation made at the Transcaucasian Metallurgical Plant has shown that the occurrence of blisters Inside the sleeves and the pipes is caused by the appearance of a cavity in front of the mandrel tip when piercing the blank into the sleeve. The roughness of the internal pipe surface depends on the quality of the Initial blank, its preheating prior to piercing, the setting of the first broaching mill and the magnitude ~-:' ratio of the diameter on the first piercing mill. It was established that a decrease in temperature by 70 - 1000C during the piercing of blanks on mill No. 1, strongly affected the quality of the internal pipe surface. Therefore when rolling 325 and 273 mm diameter pipes, preheating is now performed in two furnaces, to assure a better heating of Card 1/3 3/130/61/000/002/003/005 Improving the Quality of Thin Walled Pipes A006/A001 the blanks. The cavity in front of the mandrel tip results from non-uniform deformation and axial reduction in length. Radial tensile forces during piercing may entail rupture of the core (Figure). It is Imperative to diminish reduction forces ~2 which are the components of the skew forces 61. This may be achieved by reducifig the diameter ratio Dsleeve - Dblank Dblank The unit 400 contains 2 piercing mills. The diameter ratio can be freely varied, 1. e. it can be increased on one of the piercing mills by decreasing it on the other one. A decrease of the diameter ratio on mill 1 was obtained by reducing the mandrel diameter, the other parameters remaining constant. The angle OC between the sleeve-blank axis and the skew force 6 1 decreases. This entails a decrease of forces C.. Therefore with a reduced mahdrel diameter, the axial section of the blank is2less subjected to radial tensile forces. Improved heating of ingots on -the blooming mill, preheating of the blanks in two furnaces and a reduction of the diameter ratio on the first piercing mill, reduced the number of pipes with internal blisters by 40.7%.
