TITLE: Diagnosis of vascular mycosis in oak
SOURCE: Lesnoye khozyaystvo, no. 11, 1965, 58-59
TOPIC TAGS: plant injury, luminescence spectrum, U`V irradiation
ABSTRACT: The investigations attempted to establish criteria for the detection of
vascular mycosis in its early stages by analysis of amount, color, acidity, concentra-
tion, and luminescence of the sap. Three categories, varying from 30-60% in dryness,
and sap loss in healthy and diseased oak were observed according to the H. G. Khanis-
lamov method (1958). Sap quantity was determined by employment of an oil press mano-
meter for 3-5 min at 200 kg/cm2. The material was cleansed of bark and placed in a
brass container. Concentration was estimated in paper filtered sap by a field refrac-!
tometer adjusted to the saccharose percentage scale. The tested categories exhibited
various degive of luminescenceg from light-grey in health oak, to violet in diseased
oak. The preparation was then dried and irradiated with UV. These findings made it
possible to detect infection foc-L' The author concludes that the luminescence test

A rather favorable review. However the reviewer points
out the defects of the book and recommends their
elimination in the following edition. At end of the
article (P. 53), the editorial office of this journal
gives 2 brief abstracts of 2 other critical reviews of
the same book which supplement Vinokurov's article.

Artificially ionized, negatively charged air, contrary to positive ions, has a
beneficial influence on many physiologic functions of man and animals. Especi-
ally pronounced was this influence on the eicctro-cbemical properties of blood,
on the processes of tissue respiration and on the functional condition of the cen-
tral and peripheral nervous system. Observatio-as of many investigators have
shown that overcrowding of people and poor ventilation cause a significant
decrease of the numbers ~f light ions, and increase of heavy ions. Ile changes
referred to occur parallel to the deterioration of general sanitary conditions of
the air. Ile observable changes in the ionization condition of the air of the room
give reason to assume an influence of these changes on the health of the people.
Iley may serve as a criterion for determination of the air qualities and other
hygienic purposes. Vavilin - Moscow
