ABSTRACT: This is an abstract of artic'o no. sdbmitted to the editor and
filed, but not published in full. ln view of lack of data on the shielding pro-
portios of assembled shields, and in viow of the lack of well founded methods of
calculating the passage of gamma rays through screens, the authors propose as a
basic criterion for estimating the shielding efficiency a coefficient equal to
the ratio of the integral or maximal doso intensities behind the assembled screen
and an equivalent monolithic shield. An expression is proposed for this coeffi-
ciont and Its validity was tested with a cobalt source of activity 500 gram equiva-
lent of radium in two source geometries (collimated and isotropic source. The

counter used (SBH-10) had a much smallor dAamoter (0.6 an) than the width of the
soamq so that it could be regarded as pointliko. The experiments have demonstrated
that the use of assembled shields does not load to an appreciable local rise of
the dose intensity behind the screen. The passage of the gamma radiation through
the scams is described sufficiently well by the proposed formula. The effect of
the soam can be compensated by increasing the shield thickness or by decreasing
the seam length through the use of an assembly consisting of several layers. Orig.

TITLE; Rock concrete shield against gamma radiation
SOURCE; Atomnaya energiya, v. 20, no. 5, 1966, 425-426
TOPIC TA7,S: reactor shielding, concrete, gamma radiation
ABSTRACT: This is an abstract of article no. 80/3549, submitted to the editor
and filed, but not published In full. It Is proposed that rock concrete. which Is
made up of rocks embedded in a layer of a concrete mixture, has certain economic
and technical advantages over ordinary concrete. To chock on Its properties
blocks were made of both concrete (specific weight 2250, 3300, and 460C kg/D),
and rock concrete, containing limestone and hematite ore rocks, and having, a speci-
fic weight 2320, 3770 and 4600 kg/m3. The experiments were made with gamma rays
from a Co6O source (activ-ItY 500 gram equivalent of radium). The k4j~qj~k*jng
portios of the rock concrete wero calculated under the assumption that it iA 7.-
homogeneous mixture of Its chemical element, using the same calculation procedure

as for concrete (based on the chemical composition). The test results agreed
with the calculations, and it is ooncluded that rock concrete shields can be de-
signed in the &axe manner as concrete shields. Orig. art. has: 1 figuro.

ABSTRACT: An electric motor I (see Enclosure 1), via a worrngear and shaft 2
with an arc 3, iraparts a precession motion to the crystal, holder, and screen.
Slider 4 is connected by spindle 5 with buckle 6. The precession angle may be
adjusted by setting the slider. Spindle S can rotate in the buckle-6 bushing. to
which the x-ray-film holder is fastened. The buckle is tilted through the
precession angle about the XX and YY axes. Test crystal 7 is placed in a gonio-
metric head at the intersection of X, X, and Y, Y, axes. Crystal holder 8 is also

ABSTRACT- The new sections dealt with in this article are for
the extending and body parts of pit props. They are rolled in
a section mill consisting of three three-high and one two-
high stands, all in one line. The extending part (Figure la)
is rolled from a 115 mm square billet of 30 KhGS steel in
eleven pasoes (Figure 2). The roll-pass design Is discussed
wilth special reference to the production of a sho;lder
extending beyond relatively long and thin flanges and the
deformation of the metal in the various passes is analysed
(Figure 3). Such analysis Is also sbown (FIgure 5) for the
rcliing of the body-part section from 115 mm. square billets
cf type 35 steel in eieven passes (F-Jo.-ire 4).

TEXT: A description is offered here of the construction of an induc-
tion coupling which is very simple to be manufactured and considerably
safer in its operation than such as had been previously described in
publications. It consists of a motor a star wheel. an open rotor, a
control winding, and a fixed magnetic circuit (Fig. 1). In his calcula-
tion of the induction coupling the author refers to experimental results
obtained by himself. From considerations on experimental data, concern-
Ing the emf induced in the rods of the rotor, the author obtains a for-
mula for calculating the number of rods of the rotor. According theTeto,
the rotor obtains 216 "rods" if the star wheel has 6 teeth. Formula (2)
is obtained for the calculation of the omf in a "rod" of the rotor, and
the magnetic flux is determined with formula (5). The practically

next, the calculation of the ohmic resistance of a "rod" ~f the r ,-t-:
is dealt with. Formula (4a) ia written down for this, formulas ~At, ani
(4v) are obtained for the two additive terms and finally thp final
formula (49) is obtained for the ohmic resistan(-e of a "rod" of the
rotor. The above result was experimentally chpcked with the aid of
formula (5). Formula (10) is furthermore derived for the torque of the
coupling. The last three sections deal with calculations of goomptriral
dimensions, the excitation of the coupling, and the power of the
driving motor. There are 6 figures I tables, and 6 referenr-.eB~

Abstract : When a storage battery has to be discharged, to avoid
waste and inconvenience, the author suggests using
the same charging motor-generator by reducing the
e.m.f. of the generator to a point lower than that of
the storage battery, and letting It run as a motor.

gazovykh turbin) Moscow, Izd-vo "Hashinostroyeniye". 1966. 222 p.
illus., biblio. Errata slip inserted. 2000 copies printed.
TOPIC TAGS: turbine blade, gas turbine, blade airfoil. turbine design
PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: The effects of methods of manufacturing turbine
blades on the quality of the surface layer and on the fatigue.strength
of blade airfoils and roots is presented. Methods and results of
investigations of cold hardening and residual stresses in specimens
and actual blades after machining by various methods are given. The
original equipment used in the investigation is described. Recommen-:
dations for increasing the operational reliability of blades are
given. The book Is intended for industrial engineers and peraono In
design and scLetitific-research institutes of aviation and related
industries.
